Week 40 Reviews: Rolling in the Deep, Into the Drowning Deep

From Goodreads:
When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn't expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench…and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

From Goodreads:
New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

The ocean is home to many myths,
But some are deadly...

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

My first review of Rolling in the Deep, Into the Drowning Deep
My Review:
I had to reread these books! I just loved them the first time I read them, and they fit prompts for this month's Book Battle, and my binge read well gave me reread, so it was natural that I picked these up again, and I'm glad I did, because they're excellent stories!

It was harder to read Rolling in the Deep, because while I knew going in the first time that there were no survivors, well, the second time, I'd already met these characters, and I took their losses harder. Though I wonder as to what footage actually got sent back, because if that realization that Alexandra had, about there being 1 giant female, then Tory wouldn't have had to have that big realization at the end of Into the Drowning Deep.

These books are intense, I mean, they deal with killer mermaids. But the pacing is really great, there are moments went the tensions rise, but then they'd die down before rising again, before falling but not as much, so it was a steady incline throughout the book as the situation got worse!

I found the way that they drove away the female quiet clever, using their scientific knowledge! It all worked out for the most part, and I'm pretty happy for most all of the characters that made it through, who'd fought and survived!

This was a great series, and honestly, I wouldn't mind more, given how things end with them taking one of the mermaids back with them...
