Week 15 Review: The Immortal Rules

From Goodreads:
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

My Review:
This was a striking book, with wicked awesome writing! It just sucks you in, giving you no guarantees that you're going to come out OK, because the characters might not. Every day, night, they might die, and they are basically on the run. Told in parts, from being human, to being a vampire, to being a monster, Allie's journey to find out who she is, who she wants to be, it just consumes you!

Allie's a street rat, who doesn't have much, but what she has, she treasures, and she hides. And with good reason. And when she finds a huge stash of food, that could last throughout winter, well, she's hit the jackpot. But disaster strikes, and she is turned into a vampire to survive through the blood loss from the rabids.

When she has to learn how to be a Vampire, and work through her feels on that, and how her old friend whom she protected reacts to her, well, she changes. She grows tougher, and she finds out some of the mysteries behind the Rabids, and the vampire take over, and why there are so few vampires, that sooner or later, they will become extinct.

Later, forced out of the city she's lived in her entire life, she sets off alone, finds a band of humans looking for Eden, a city totally vampire free. And while she doesn't get along with Rachel, Zeke, on the other hand, she does.

Zeke's an interesting character. He's had a hard time, his whole family was killed by rabids when he was young, and he heard it from in the closet where he was hiding, and he was adopted by the guy that became the leader of the group. Zeke is going to be the next leader, and he's going to be a good one, because while he's seen all these bad things, he still sees the good in everyone.

The ending, well, it gives hope in a pretty hopeless world that humans can survive, can live, and create in a world of darkness, and still keep going. And yeah, it was so good!

The Immortal Rules is a book that has to be read, because it is simply amazing! And the short teaser from The Lost Prince didn't hurt, either!
