Beneath the Surface: Review

From Goodreads:
She's fighting to stay independent—he's determined to protect her no matter what…

Brooke Richards survived the earthquake that took her parents and most of her leg, but she needs time to regroup. A trip to Florida for a state-of-the-art prosthesis and to visit her best friend Linda seems ideal. But the trip turns traumatic when Brooke witnesses Linda’s boat disintegrating in a fiery explosion.

Police officer Garrett Ciavello believes the blast was intentionally set to hide something Linda found on a dive. When Brooke offers her expertise in underwater archeology, Garrett accepts her help with the investigation. But since his fiancée's death years ago, Garrett has become overprotective, and as they are drawn to each other, Garrett realizes he will risk anything to keep Brooke safe.

Brooke is fiercely independent. Garrett is fiercely protective. Will they heal each other's wound and find a killer…before it’s too late?

My Review:
This was a fantastic read! Action, romance, mystery, and heart-wrenching scenes and memories and what the characters have gone through, painful pasts with loss, and painful presents with the echoes of that loss, and how it affects them through the novel!

You'd think that that these characters would've clashed, what with the independence, and the protectiveness, and you'd be right! Added to that is the stress of the investigation, the threats on her life, the exotic locations (to non-Floridians?) and a strong physical attraction, and this novel just pops with life!

Most characters have flaws, aren't perfect. In Beneath the Surface, Brooke has a physical reminder of her past, of her parents dying from the earthquake, because it also took her leg, and she has a prosthetic. And since I've never had that kind of injury (the most I've had trouble in getting around is when I broke my leg) the subtle ways of how Brooke had to deal with hers in her day to day life, well, it was just excellently written in!

All in all, Beneath the Surface was an excellent book snapping with tension and heat, and the writing was absolutely wonderful! Beneath the Surface is a must read!

Bio:
Joya Fields has been making up stories for as long as she can remember, and it’s all her parents’ fault! They allowed only one T.V. in her childhood home and even that was rarely turned on. So, to entertain her sisters (and herself), Joya developed Story Hour. Her siblings’ wide-eyed, rapt attention fascinated Joya almost as much as the chorus of “Oh, no... don’t stop!” that followed when she whispered, “The End.” Their enthusiasm, she believes, is what encouraged her to continue making stuff up.

As she grew older, Joya put pencil to paper and wrote stories to give as gifts. Everyone thought she was so clever. She thought she was pretty smart, too, because her gifts didn’t dent her allowance.

It came as no surprise to anyone when Joya obtained a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland. Over the years, she has taught arts and crafts, worked in public relations, owned a daycare center, helped her children raise prize-winning 4-H animals, completed three marathons, and even spent a year as a Baltimore Colts cheerleader.

Joya still enjoys turning stories into gifts. Most recently, she gathered memories from her husband’s 10 siblings and turned them into a memoir, presented to her in-laws at Christmas.

Yes, Joya continues to make up stories... but now, her work wins writing contests and inspires acceptance letters from editors. Over 100 of her stories and articles have been published in magazines and newspapers, and she’s putting the finishing touches on her fifth novel…a romantic suspense.

When she’s not busy writing articles, short stories, and novels, Joya loves spending time with her romantic hero/high school sweetheart/husband of over twenty years, two very supportive teenaged children, and a pug who follows her everywhere she goes.
