Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
My Review:
Oh, this was a freaking great book! I loved it, and it was different, how humans reacted to the vampires, how the vampires are, and how new ones are made-they're bitten, and then they have a drop of human blood. That's it. Which is why a vampire is made, and not told the rules, and doesn't kill those he drinks from, and then it spread, and spread, until the response was to make Coldtowns...yeah.
Tana was awesome. She had almost become a vampire, because her mom became cold, and Tana eventually tried to free her-and her mom bit her, and her dad killed her mom. But Tana didn't become cold. And then when all of this happens, well, going to the Coldtown seemed the best thing for her to do.
There were tons of great characters, from her ex-boyfriend, who she played games, kissing other boys and girls, to the mysterious vampire, Gavriel, who is insane most of the time, to brother and sister, Midnight and Winter, humans with a blog following, who want to become vampires.
Gavriel, and his mysteries, well, they were freaking interesting, and who he was, the one that was supposed to kill the vampire who spread vampirism, and how Gavriel was locked up for years because of that, and that's why he was insane. And then the plotting, and who he turns out to be, because of what he did (killed the guy, and took his power, and then came to the Coldtown) and yeah, that was pretty awesome.
The ending? With her going to go through the Coldness, and not drink a drop of blood, and how he promises to just listen to her scream, and not help her? Creepy, but fitting with this book, because it was creepy, eerie, sickening, but addictive to read!
Yeah, I really enjoyed this book, it was utterly fantastic, and while I wish for a spin off at least, to see what happens, I loved this book!
