Week 31 Review: Promise of Shadows

From Goodreads:
Zephyr Mourning has never been very good at being a Harpy. She'd rather watch reality TV than learn forty-seven ways to kill a man, and she pretty much sucks at wielding magic. Zephyr was ready for a future pretending to be a normal human instead of a half-god assassin. But all that changes when her sister is murdered—and she uses a forbidden dark power to save herself from the same fate.

Zephyr is on the run from a punishment worse than death when an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend (a surprisingly HOT friend) changes everything. Because it seems like Zephyr might just be the Nyx, a dark goddess made flesh that is prophesied to change the power balance. For hundreds of years the half-gods have lived in fear, and Zephyr is supposed to change that.

But how is she supposed to save everyone when she can't even save herself?

My Review:
This has to be one of the best books I've read this year. It utterly captivated me, and when I was pulled away from it, I almost hit something, because I wanted to read more, and I wanted to read it now! And yeah, I read on the author's website, that if sales are good, she does have more ideas for Zephyr's journey,  if the publisher decides to buy more in this world, making it a series, and I would absolutely love that!

Zephyr is an awesome character. She's basically the screw up of the family, the one that has powers that only her sister knew about-but then it turns out that that isn't true. She failed the tests to be considered a Harpy by others, and now she's supposed to be the Nyx, well, she has a lot of self-doubt in her abilities to perform the role.

Oh, and the book starts out with her in Hell. Tartarus, to be exact, for killing a minor god. Well, they have terms with the A and the E together, but my computer doesn't have those symbols, so using different terms then what's in the book. Reason why she killed him? He killed her sister, Whisper. Yeah. Plus now a) brother of the dude she killed who killed her sister wants her dead and b) she killed a god. God's are supposed to be immortal. They do not like the fact that she killed a god. So yeah, while the vote was narrow at her trial, in the end, she was sent to Tartarus instead of being killed.

I really enjoyed all the banter in this book, especially between her and Blue, Tallon's half brother, mostly about the attraction between her and Tallon, but in other things, too, because yeah, he was just a light hearted guy, who's had some recent trauma in that his younger brother was killed by Hera's Acolytes, just like Zephyr's sister.

There were a lot of personal twists in this book. Like, for example, that her and her best friend down in Hell, Cass, were only rescued because Zephyr was predicted to be the next Nyx. Not because she'd known the lady who sent Tallon and Blue down to rescue Zephyr all her life, but because she filled a role. Not fun to learn. Oh, and her dad's Hades. Who was pretty scary. But it's because of that, that she was able to kill the guy, with her dark powers, powers that are the most powerful of the generation, which is what makes her the Nyx.

I absolutely loved this book, the world was so complex, and yet different from other Greek Myth books, so yeah, I'm hoping for a least 1 sequel!
