My Review:
I really enjoyed this book. Lex was a really fantastic character, so smart, both brains, and understanding of social situations, who fit nicely in her group of brainiacs. And how her brother's friend commented that she was a cool sister. She was.

This is a book about loss, because she lost her brother to his depression just before Christmas. It's also a book about dealing with those feelings, of finding a place in the world after yours has been turned upside down.

Lex carried a lot of guilt-she promised her brother she'd be there for him if he needed it, and he contacted her just before he killed himself. And she ignored it because she was with Stephen. But you can never really know if something bad is going to happen. You just have to live life.

What I loved most (besides the ending) was the fact that this could maybe be a paranormal book, what with her dreams and the maybe ghost of her brother. Or it could be her brain dealing with the grief. That it could be either one. That was really great to have it open!

Favourite lines: "Dear alien race in future: Please don't read this journal as a representative of the typical life of a human adolescent. It will screw up your research for years to come. In fact, it's probably best if you simply disregard what's written here entirely. Also, if you haven't already, please don't annihilate the human race. We can be charming." Yes, please don't destroy us! "She has the dates and times of all my first accomplishments: my first bath, my first smile, my first steps and words (Da-da, then dog-gy, then Ma-ma, which totally offended my mother), my first teeth, my first haircut, my first friend, where it says Sadie McIntyre in Mom's perfect cursive. As if I really want to know that stuff." Mostly what gets me is the first words bit, but the ending, too, just, love! "Yep, that's how the story goes. 2 minutes into meeting my baby brother, I claimed him as my own personal property. He may not have been cute, but he was my brother. Mine." I claim my doggies as mine, which is a different situation, but basically the same claiming! "Sometimes it pays to be a nerd and carry around a large assortment of office supplies as a general habit." Yeah, being able to learn and execute how to pick a lock!

This really was a fantastic book, and now I just want to read more Cynthia Hand!
