Week 29 Reviews: Obsidian Butterfly, Narcissus in Chains

From Goodreads:
Anita revisits an old acquaintance, Edward (a.k.a. Death) the monster hunter, a coldhearted and seemingly soulless killer whose ruthlessness makes Anita look like a pussycat. Edward calls in a favor Anita owes from some time back by asking her to travel to Santa Fe to help him investigate a monster unlike any he's encountered before. Anita readily accepts because although Edward scares her enough that she doesn't want to turn her back on him, she's also intrigued by the man to the point that she can't wait to get a closer look at his life. And his hedging and lack of details regarding the murders pique her interest as well.

Though Anita thinks she is prepared and there is no way Edward can shock her, he proves her dead wrong right at the start. On the heels of this revelation, Anita is shaken even more when she finally learns the details of the murders Edward is involved with. The crime scenes are sites of unbelievable carnage, with bodies that have been violently torn apart limb by limb, their entrails ripped away. But even more horrifying than the dead are those who have been left alive, each of them skinned from head to toe, their tongues ripped away so all they can do is scream.

Edward has brought in a couple of other questionable assistants, two men who challenge Anita in ways she is ill prepared to handle. Throw some misogynistic cops, a bevy of strange and powerful creatures, and plenty of sexual tension into the mix, and Anita finds herself facing some of her biggest challenges ever. Before all is said and done, she will be forced to face some painful truths about herself and confront one of the most evil and powerful monsters in existence.

Obsidian Butterfly is a scintillating journey to a world where the inhabitants are all fascinating, death isn't always final (and far from the worst thing that can happen to you), and unimaginable horrors are terrifyingly real.

From Goodreads:
Hamilton's vampire-hunting Anita Blake faces a plethora of foes in her tenth outing.

Just returned to St. Louis after six months away, Anita is still no closer to choosing between her lovers—Jean-Claude, a vampire, and Richard, a werewolf. But she has to rely on both for help after two of the wereleopards that she has been watching are abducted at a seedy club called Narcissus in Chains.

Anita and her boyfriends rescue the wereleopards from the sinister people holding them, but Anita is wounded in the fight and put at risk of becoming a wereleopard herself. Richard angrily captures the wereleopard he believes is responsible and threatens to execute him.

Anita must now rescue that wereleopard from Richard and the werewolves he leads, even as she mourns the apparent end of her relationship with him. Then she realizes that those who kidnapped the first two wereleopards are targeting other lycanthropes. Maybe she will be next.

My Review:
Oh, man, both of these books were so freaking great! And they were pretty big books, in different ways. Obsidian Butterfly is the first book to really have Anita travel away from St. Louis. And Narcissus in Chains marks the end of the series before things become more about sex, as far as my reading reviews of the future books have said.

I really enjoyed having a book that had so much time with Anita with Edward! They have such an interesting dynamic, and I really enjoyed reading about them! Especially with him having a fiancee with two kids from a previous marriage!

Both of the mysteries in these books were multifaceted, and there was a lot going on! Like, with Anita having to meet the vampire in charge of the area, and what powers that lady had. And the thing going on with Edwards family, and then the main mystery of the bad guy! Then in Narcissus in Chains, it was all, missing people, bringing the various were groups together, and new character, Micah!

I know there's going to be a lot of changes after these books! After what happened, that's kinda expected. Anita's coming into more power, and some of that power it seems, will be difficult for her to deal with. But I can't wait to read about it!

Yeah, these books were absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to read more!
