Week 5 Reviews: Scythe, Thunderhead

From Goodreads:
Two teens must learn the "art of killing" in this Printz Honor–winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award–winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.

From Goodreads:
Rowan and Citra take opposite stances on the morality of the Scythedom, putting them at odds, in the chilling sequel to the Printz Honor Book Scythe from New York Times bestseller Neal Shusterman, author of the Unwind dystology.

The Thunderhead cannot interfere in the affairs of the Scythedom. All it can do is observe—it does not like what it sees.

A year has passed since Rowan had gone off grid. Since then, he has become an urban legend, a vigilante snuffing out corrupt scythes in a trial by fire. His story is told in whispers across the continent.

As Scythe Anastasia, Citra gleans with compassion and openly challenges the ideals of the "new order." But when her life is threatened and her methods questioned, it becomes clear that not everyone is open to the change.

Will the Thunderhead intervene?

Or will it simply watch as this perfect world begins to unravel?

My Review:
Wow, I loved reading this series! I loved the world of the Scythes and of the Thunderhead, of immortality, it's just so interesting! And of course, however much they think their world is perfect, it's not.  I really enjoyed Citra and Rowan in this world, she was very quick thinking, and oh, poor Rowan, he had the bad fortune of being the apprentice of Scythe Goddard, leader of the New Order.

Ok, first I have to talk about the covers. Because at first, I didn't think too much about them. But looking at them, I saw the white space between the hoods and the scythes, and it makes the shape of a face. Which I didn't notice at first, I though the heads were further back in the hoods to not be seen. So yeah, that was pretty cool!

With the "new order" I was like, no, this isn't new, this is regressing, becoming more like us, but without the worry of death. To enjoy taking lives? That just proves Scythe Faraday point that only those who don't want to be Scythes should be them.

We met a new character, Greyson, who was pretty important to Thunderhead. He was raised in the care of the Thunderhead, and wanted to give back. And he did. But not in the way that he expected, and yeah, he played a major role in the book, and he'll continue to, given the ending of Thunderhead!

Between each chapter was a little bit that would contemplate something. In the first book, it was exceprts from Scythe's journals, mostly Scythe Curie's. But in Thunderhead, well, we got to hear from Thunderhead itself, which was really interesting, because it was reacting in real time by the end!

One thing that I found really funny was their impressions of our age. I mean, one throw away thought was that we traveled underground to avoid the roaming packs of murderers. They really have no idea what it's like to be mortal. Even if they become deadish, they'll be brought back.

I did read something of a negative review, which brought up some good points, that things were a little contrived, but I did enjoy it. And with the way things were left standing with Faraday going off to the fail safe, and everybody who was on the Scythe's city dead or dying, I just need more!

Loved reading these books so much, they were so enjoyable, and I can't wait for the final book!
