Week 22 Review: PERfunctory AfFECTION

From Goodreads:
Is it better to live a lie of perfection when the truth is too ugly to survive?

Meg wants a normal life. Her new artistic style, born in the depression of her mother's death, is poised to take the art world by storm, if she could just overcome the debilitating anxiety caused by the car accident that scarred her boyfriend, Austin. Encouraged by her therapist, Meg pushes outside her comfort zone to befriend Haley, a guest instructor at the university where Meg teaches. Haley is everything Meg wants to be: charismatic, confident, and perfect, but when Austin expresses his worry that Haley is changing Meg too fast and leads her to realize that Austin is trying to keep her afraid and needing him, Meg kicks him out of her life. Or at least, she tries.

Kim Harrison, author of the number one bestselling Urban Fantasy Hollows series, brings to life a world terrifyingly near to our own, where what's real and what shouldn't exist twine together in the madness of a troubled mind desperate for a way out. But when the truth is reveled, the question remains, is it better to live a lie of perfection, or cleave to an ugly reality that will destroy you?

My Review:
This book was strange, unsettling, weird and confusing, and yeah, really great to read! It is a short book and takes place in about 3 days-and a lot happens in those days. There were big life decisions like breaking up with her boyfriend and moving in with a friend she'd only known for a day. A fire, a homeless person ranting about the same meds she's taking...Yeah. A lot.

A big part of this book is knowing what's real. And as Meg says in the beginning, before she took the drug, she knew. So with a unreliable narrator, it's hard to know what's really going on. There were some really fantastic twists along the way!

One thing is that I got annoyed at how Meg was always saying that Haley was perfect. If she's crazy, it's made up, if she's not, then even if she's fae, she's not perfect. Maybe physically, but not mentally, emotionally. So yeah, all those times saying she was perfect bugged me!

There's this idea in the back of my head, that maybe Meg is a little crazy from her mom's death and the car accident. But also that Perfection and Haley are real, and the drug helps her see them. It doesn't have to be either/or situation, it could be both!

Yeah, this book won't be for everyone, but I enjoyed reading it!
