Week 27 Reviews: Deadmen Walking, Death Doesn't Bargain, At Death's Door

From Goodreads:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon debuts a sweeping new epic saga sure to appeal to her millions of fans!

Deadmen tell their tales . . .

To catch evil, it takes evil. Enter Devyl Bane--an ancient dark warlord returned to the human realm as one of the most notorious pirates in the New World. A man of many secrets, Bane makes a pact with Thorn--an immortal charged with securing the worst creations the ancient gods ever released into our world. Those powers have been imprisoned for eons behind enchanted gates . . . gates that are beginning to buckle. At Thorn's behest, Bane takes command of a crew of Deadmen and, together, they are humanity's last hope to restore the gates and return the damned to their hell realms.

But things are never so simple. And one of Bane's biggest problems is the ship they sail upon. For the Sea Witch isn't just a vessel, she's also a woman born of an ancient people he wronged and who in turn wronged him during a centuries long war between their two races--a woman who is also sister to their primary target. Now Marcelina, the Sea Witch, must choose. Either she remains loyal to her evil sister and almost extinct race against Bane and his cause, and watches humanity fall, or she puts faith in an enemy who has already betrayed her. Her people over the totality of humanity--let's hope Bane can sway her favor.

Deadmen Walking is the first historical fantasy title in New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon's Deadman's Cross series. It is a tale of passion and loss, emotions that wound and heal...and ultimate redemption.

From Goodreads:
Death Doesn't Bargain is the second historical fantasy title in New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon's Deadman's Cross series. Where Deadmen tell their tales, and every soul is damned or redeemed by the final choices they make.

The Deadmen are back...

But so are the demons who have broken free of their eternal prison and are bent on mankind's destruction. The worst of the lot is Vine, determined to claim their lives for taking hers. She will see the world burn...and has the perfect lure to destroy them all. One of their own.

Kalder Dupree has never known a day of mercy. Born to the cruelest of mer-races, he sacrificed himself for his crew and is in Vine's hands. He expects no mercy or rescue.

Yet Cameron Jack is determined to set Kalder free. As a Hellchaser, it's her calling, and she cannot allow even a not-so-innocent to be tortured for an act of kindness that spared her damnation.

To defeat evil, it sometimes takes an even worse evil, and Cameron is willing to do whatever she must to make this right. If Vine thought she had her hands full before, she hasn't seen anything nearly as powerful as Cameron's resolve.

#1 New York Times bestseller Sherrilyn Kenyon brings us the final chapter in the Deadman's Cross saga with At Death's Door, an epic pirate fantasy perfect for her millions of Dark-Hunter fans

Welcome to the latest Deadmen's Quest...

Valynda Moore was born cursed. So when she dies as the result of a spell gone wrong and is trapped in the body of a voodoo doll, she expects nothing else from her messed up life. Until Thorn, leader of the Hellchasers, offers her a chance at redemption and a new life.

But nothing has ever gone her way, for the Malachai, the very beast she and her crew of Deadmen have sworn to keep locked away, has risen. And this time he's taken prisoners. Valynda must keep her wits about her or be denied her salvation and forced to watch as the entire world falls into the hands of absolute evil.

It's a demon-eat-demon world where the stakes have never been higher and either redemption or the ultimate betrayal waits for her At Death's Door.

My first review of Deadmen Walking, Death Doesn't Bargain
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading these books! I've really enjoyed the first two books before, but it was so great to read all of them, because they are pretty close together and interlinking! So glad that I reread them, because Ghede Nibo is in Deadmen Walking, and I'd forgotten that.

I have a few questions about Deadmen Walking. First, I thought it was through his dad that Duel had Adoni heritage, not his mom. But then why would they be using his mom's symbol? So confused! Maybe it's because she was supposed to stand by his dad, not become his wife, and that standing by thing was why they use her symbol? Also, when did Vine switch out the medallion? Mara never had it, Du did, and then he put it in his staff thing. So I don't know when she had the opportunity to switch it out...

For some reason, I have this memory of Kalder telling the truth about what happened with Muerig death, that it was planned. But I guess I made that up pretty vividly, because it didn't happen. Wish it did, because that's a moment that I love reading!

Ok, so Rezar is Set, and Verlyn is Jaden, and Apollymi is Braith. So that just leaves Cam as the final Source god who we don't know who she is. We might have gotten the name she's currently going by in The Guardian, but it's been a while since I last read that. But we also get it in At Death's Door, so that means we know who all 6 of them are. Well, there's Lilith, the dragons mother, but I think she's dead...

I kinda wish we had an explanation on Ghede Nibo and what he is. I mean, I know basically nothing about, well, I don't even know the right word to describe it, like, I'm pretty sure it's a religion, but I was just a bit lost there. But then there's the part where it fits into this world, would've liked a few more details there, too.

At Death's Door explains a lot. Like why New Orleans is the paranormal hot spot that it is in the present day. It also drops some knowlege that we may or may not have had before, but gave us a different look at it, like that Adrian considers Acheron his brother, even though there's so many generations between the original Malachi, Apollymi's son, and Adrian. Yeah, pretty interesting!

Love this series so much, they're such great reads!
