Week 47 Review: Gideon the Ninth

From Goodreads:
Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton.

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.

Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

My Review:
Oh, man, this book was amazing! The world is absolutely incredible, and Tamsyn Muir's writing was so easy to read! You are thrown into this world without explanations at first, and there's still so much to learn, but Gideon is an amazing narrator!

I loved how the magic, the necromancy, worked. And how they had scientific processes and experiments and such. I don't read a ton of fantasy, so I don't know how often it's done, but of what I've read, it hasn't been much, so that was so great to read!

We're given hints about Gideon's origins, that she might be the daughter of one of the original Lyctor's. You know, what this competition that Harrowhark has dragged Gideon to for the plot of this book? Yeah, it might explain some things! Though there still are some questions...

That ending was just incredible! I didn't quite get what was going on with the necromancy, since we're in Gideon's head and she's a fighter, but we'll learn more about the properties in book 2, since Harrow is going to narrate. So that'll be interesting. But oh, the reason why!

Loved this book so much, it was incredible, and yeah,
