Week 19 Review: Beyond a Darkened Shore

From Goodreads:
The ancient land of Éirinn is mired in war. Ciara, Princess of Mide, has never known a time when Éirinn's kingdoms were not battling for power, or Northmen were not plundering their shores.

The people of Mide have thankfully always been safe because of Ciara's unearthly ability to control her enemies' minds and actions. But lately, a mysterious crow has been appearing to Ciara, whispering warnings of an even darker threat. Although her clansmen dismiss her visions as pagan nonsense, Ciara fears this coming evil will destroy not just Éirinn, but the entire world.

Then the crow leads Ciara to Leif, a young Northman leader. Leif should be Ciara's enemy, but when Ciara discovers that he, too, shares her prophetic visions, she knows he's something more. Leif is mounting an impressive army, and with Ciara's strength in battle the two might have a chance to save their world.

With evil rising around them, they'll do what it takes to defend the land they love…even if it means making the greatest sacrifice of all.

My Review:
Reading this book was so fantastic! I really enjoyed this book of historical Ireland, and of one woman becoming allies with her enemy, and this quest they they were on to save everybody from destruction. They faced a number of obstacles-and had some pretty harrowing adventures, and it was epic to read!

Honestly, her parents treated her like crap. Like it says in the book, women of her statue usually only had two choices-marry or becoming a nun. And she got a 3rd, to be a warrior, but she was pretty much despised by her people for her power, her dad used her and didn't do anything to improve the opinions of her, made it worse by making her practice on them, and it just wasn't a good situation at all!

Watching Ciara and Lief together was pretty darned cute. They're both warriors, though he's more physical and she's got the body takeover power. They're enemies, but they'll have to work together if they're going to beat this threat. And watching her struggle with it made for entertaining reading!

Watching her power grow, watching her learn, face off some hard choices, and some difficult situations, was it was really amazing to read! That one bit near the end, where she confronts her sister's killer, that was pretty emotional. Oh, and that ending, that was just epic and bad ass of her! Loved it!

This book was a really fantastic read, and I can't wait to read more by Jessica Leake!
