Week 43 Reviews: Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, Secret History

Shadows of Self is the sequel to the USA Today bestselling The Allow of Law, part of the Mistborn series

When family obligations forced Waxillium Ladrian to forsake the frontier lands and return to the metropolis of his birth to take his place as head of a noble House, he little imagined that the crime-fighting skills acquired during twenty years in the dusty plains would be just as applicable in the big city. He soon learned that there too, just being a talented Twinborn —one who can use both Allomancy and Feruchemy, the dominant magical modes on Scadrial —would not suffice.

This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society will now face its first test by terrorism and assassination, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax, his eccentric sidekick Wayne, and brilliant, beautiful young Marasi, now officially part of the constabulary, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife can stop Scadrial's progress in its tracks.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, the Mistborn series is a heist story of political intrigue and magical, martial-arts action.

Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds.

The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metal minds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.

From Goodreads:
Mistborn: Secret History is a companion story to the original Mistborn trilogy. As such, it contains HUGE SPOILERS for the books Mistborn (The Final Empire), The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages. It also contains very minor spoilers for the book The Bands of Mourning. Mistborn: Secret History builds upon the characterization, events, and worldbuilding of the original trilogy. Reading it without that background will be a confusing process at best. In short, this isn't the place to start your journey into Mistborn. (Though if you have read the trilogy—but it has been a while—you should be just fine, so long as you remember the characters and the general plot of the books.) Saying anything more here risks revealing too much. Even knowledge of this story's existence is, in a way, a spoiler. There's always another secret.

My Review:
Yeah, wow! I'm just loving diving into the Cosmere, it's such a wonderful world, and Brandon Sanderson is a masterful writer. I absolutely loved reading these stories, and the wait (though not as long as people who've been waiting since The Bands of Mourning came out) is going to be evil, since book 4 isn't likely to come out for at least another year, if not more, given his writing schedule.

Shadows of Self, man, that was just a kick in the gut. Most of it was fine, the investigation into the politics of what was going on, and it was all very clever. And I loved how the kandra were a big part of the plot of this book, their first real introduction in the second era. (Though they were mentioned in the first book, if not by name!) But that ending, that reveal? That hurt, and combined with the betrayal that Wax experiences in Band of Mourning, he just goes through the wringer!

That ending of Bands of Mourning, that was just all over the map in emotions. The betrayal, the reveals, and the twists, just came together so beautifully. And then that last bit, well, it connects really well with Secret History, and I just need to know what's going to happen next!

All 3 of these added so much to the world, and I'm just so excited to read more. Plus it was so great, in Secret History, to be in that spoiler character's head! And I'm wondering if we might see that device get used in the future, because it wasn't needed here...

I just loved reading more of this series and of Brandon Sanderson's writing, and I can't wait to read more!
