Week 25 Reviews: The Moth & the Flame, The Crown & the Arrow, The Wrath & the Dawn, The Mirror & the Maze, The Rose & the Dagger

From Goodreads:
It started as playful, if barbed, banter before rising to a fateful wager with a most notorious rake—the Captain of the Guard, Jalal al-Khoury—who may have finally met his match in a lovely, if haughty, handmaiden, Despina. But she, too, seems to have met her match in the handsome Jalal. What begins as a tempestuous battle of will and wit in short order becomes a passionate affair spurred on by tragedy of the worst kind.

From Goodreads:
Seventy-one days and seventy-one nights had come and gone since Khalid began killing his brides. This dawn, Khalid would mark the loss of the seventy-second girl, Shahrzad al-Khayzuran. Khalid didn't know how many more of these dawns he could take. And there was something about this latest girl that piqued his interest. Not only had she volunteered to marry him, but at their wedding ceremony, she had seemed not the least bit afraid. In fact, what he had seen in her eyes was nothing short of pure hatred. She was about to lose her life. Why wasn't she afraid? Why did she hate him so? He had never before gone to his wife's chambers before her death at dawn. Tonight would be different.

From Goodreads:
A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she's falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

From Goodreads:
The city of Rey is burning. With smoke billowing, fires blazing and his people fleeing, Khalid races back to defend his city, and protect his queen. But Khalid is too late to do either. He and his men arrive to find the city in ruins, nothing but a maze of destruction, and Shahrzad is gone. But who could have wrought such devastation? Khalid fears he may already know the answer, the price of choosing love over the people of Rey all too evident.

From Goodreads:
The much anticipated sequel to the breathtaking The Wrath and the Dawn, lauded by Publishers Weekly as "a potent page-turner of intrigue and romance."

I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust.

In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse—one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid's empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan.

While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn't yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.

My first review of The Moth & the Flame, The Crown & the Arrow, The Wrath & the Dawn, The Mirror & the Maze, The Rose & the Dagger
My Review:
I loved reading this series again! I love it, it's so fantastic, but I'd only read it the one time before, so of course I had to reread it! It's been so long! I loved being in this world again, with these characters again, and comparing it to the webtoon!

The short stories were really great, they really added some depth to the series, seeing things that Shahrzad wasn't there to see, as well as being from other perspectives. Despina and Jalal are really important to book 2, and of course Khalid, of right at the beginning of The Wrath & the Dawn, and right after, those are pretty important, life-changing moments for him, so it was really great to see them!

Shahrzad is a pretty vengeful person at the beginning, she volunteers to marry Khalid because her best friend was one the the wives that he married and then killed, and she wants to kill him. But as she gets to know him-and learns why he's doing this, well, things change, and I loved that!

The story of the 2nd book, it's all about the magic. That her dad is dabbling in, in the curse that Khalid is still under, and I really enjoyed learning more about it. Plus all the stuff in Tariq's camp, loyalties are under question, and there was just a lot going on, and it was so great!

This was a really great series, and I can't wait to read more by Renée Ahdieh!
