Path or Pantheon Update 41

So I read my next book for Path or Pantheon, and it was Flash Fire which was for the prompt Tyr Path, and I'll be reading The Starless Crown next! So this should be the end of this challenge. But I still have 9 prompts to fill (though 1 book, the power is to use a previously read book, which I'll be doing) so I'm going to continue, since I did read most of the non-ARC's, so I can read the majority of these in ARC August. And I was moving, so didn't have as much time to read, so I will continue on, just like I did last year!

Week 30 Review: Wings of Shadow

From Goodreads:
In the heart-stopping finale to the Crown of Feathers trilogy, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake calls "absolutely unforgettable," Veronyka must face her most devastating enemy yet: her own sister.

I had a sister, once…

Veronyka is no longer an orphaned stable boy or a nameless Phoenix Rider apprentice: she is the daughter of Pheronia Ashfire, the last queen of the Golden Empire…and the niece of Avalkyra Ashfire, the resurrected rebel queen who tore the empire apart.

We shone brightly, burned fiercely.

Now that the secret is out, everyone at the Eyrie treats Veronyka differently, and with Tristan still a hostage of the scheming Lord Rolan—and Sev with him as a spy—Veronyka feels very much alone. Except for her beloved phoenix, Xephyra, of course, and her new friend, Kade, who has his own reasons for wanting to save Tristan.

Was it always going to come down to this? Sister against sister? Darkness against light?

Veronyka is determined to do whatever it takes to get Tristan back, even if that means revealing her identity to the world and inheriting a throne she’s not sure she wants. But when she discovers that Avalkyra has bonded with a strix—a legendary creature of darkness that feeds off the life force of others—Veronyka realizes she has more to deal with than an encroaching war with the empire. Val is willing to destroy everything to get her revenge on a world that rejected her, and if Veronyka wants to bring peace to the empire and Pyra alike, she must face down her sister once and for all.

The world began with Ashfire queens…perhaps they will also be its destruction.

My Review:
Oh man, this was such a fantastic read! After that ending of the previous book, I had to know what was going to happen next for these characters! That cliffhanger ending was just incredibly evil, so once I had a chance to read this book, oh boy, I just couldn't put it down!

Basically, I needed to know how everyone was doing after everything went down in that previous ending. Of course Tristan is held captive, and Sev is a spy, and Veronyka knows the truth about her family, so she's understandably distraught.

These characters have been through a lo, and their journeys aren't done yet. There's facing off against the bad guys, there's finding out the final bits of their history that they need, and it all came together so well together!

And oh, I loved how everything wrapped up! That final battle was pretty intense! And boy did Nicki Pau Preto not pull any punches, there were so many intense moments! And then it was over, and there were some melancholy moments, but there were some parts that were joyful, and all in all, was a fantastic ending!

I loved reading this book, and I can't wait to see what Nicki Pau Preto writes next!

Week 30 Review: The Alcazar

From Goodreads:
Sera has finally recognized the true power of her Cerulean blood. But in order to return home, she'll need help from Agnes, Leo, and their grandmother—the only person with knowledge about the mysterious island of Braxos, where the Cerulean tether is anchored. Though the journey will be treacherous, Sera will risk anything to see her City again.

Meanwhile, the High Priestess's power has reached new heights in the City Above the Sky. And when Leela begins having visions of Sera, alive, she knows she's the key to saving the City. But to bring Sera home, Leela must channel the strength, courage, and curiosity that once got her friend exiled.

With the help of friends, family, and Cerulean magic, Leela and Sera could soon return to their normal lives. But when that time comes, will Leela be able to serve her City as blindly as she once did? And will Sera be able to leave everything and everyone she's grown to love on the planet behind?

My Review:
Oh man, this was such a fantastic read! I loved the first book, and I was dying to know how it was going to end, and yeah, this was a great end to the duology! It was so great to be back with these characters in this world again, and we learned so much!

Like the first book, we have both Leela and Sera's story going on, with Sera on the planet, and Leela on in the Cerulean space. They're both facing threats, and between the two stories there was always something going on!

We did learn quite a bit, both the history of this planet, and the history of the Cerulean, why the High Priestess has acted the way she did. And while it doesn't excuse her actions, it does explain them, so I'm really glad that we got it!

All in all, this story came together really well, though that ending is a bit bittersweet! These characters grew and learned over the course of these books, and they had epic adventures, and they've earned their happy ending!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait for what's next from Amy Ewing!

Week 30 Review: Project Hail Mary

From Goodreads:
A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian--while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! I've enjoyed all of his books, but this is the first of them that could be classified as traditional sci fi. I loved the whole idea of it, of a group of people trying to find a way to solve this issue of the sun being eaten.

The way this story was told was really great-we bounced between the present when he has memory loss, and he's stuck on his spaceship alone, and the past, where this issue has started, and humanity has to find a way to solve it. It worked so well!

That unexpected ally that's mentioned? Well, like I said, this is more traditional sci fi, and we have first contact! I loved watching that story unfold, and I'm not sure which of the two was my favourite character, because they were both so great!

The science in this book was really great, with what this threat was, and the flashbacks of how they were analyzing what they had, and preparing for the mission that he ultimately ends up on. There was always something that they could do, either some problem to react to, or some mission to complete, and it was really compelling!

And oh, those twists in the end! They made sense for what had happened previously, but I just wasn't expecting them! But it does work out in the end, I like the choices that Ryland made. It's bittersweet, but such a great read!

This was a really great book, and I can't wait for whatever is next from Andy Weir!

Week 30 Review: A Psalm of Storms and Silence

From Goodreads:
The highly-anticipated second—and final—book in the immersive fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore that began with the New York Times bestselling A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, from author Roseanne A. Brown.

Karina lost everything after a violent coup left her without her kingdom or her throne. Now the most wanted person in Sonande, her only hope of reclaiming what is rightfully hers lies in a divine power hidden in the long-lost city of her ancestors.

Meanwhile, the resurrection of Karina's sister has spiraled the world into chaos, with disaster after disaster threatening the hard-won peace Malik has found as Farid's apprentice. When they discover that Karina herself is the key to restoring balance, Malik must use his magic to lure her back to their side. But how do you regain the trust of someone you once tried to kill?

As the fabric holding Sonande together begins to tear, Malik and Karina once again find themselves torn between their duties and their desires. And when the fate of everything hangs on a single, horrifying choice, they each must decide what they value most—a power that could transform the world, or a love that could transform their lives.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! After the ending of the first book, yeah, I was desperate to read this book and see how things would go from there, and yeah, it was such a great read! I really couldn't put it down! Absolutely loved this story!

Karina is on the run. She has her powers, and she's being hunted by Farid after the events that brought back Hanane. Whereas Malik is at the palace, under the tutelage of Farid, learning more about his magic-and the past, and the secrets, hurts and betrayals that are having an impact on what's happening now, what binds him and Karina together in a cycle of destruction.

The representation in this book is absolutely amazing. Race is the big one, but some of the less noticeable ones, like non-binary, mental health, and consent, are all part of this book, and very well done, and I'm so glad that they're a part of this book!

Farid, oh, man, he was so manipulative and abusive, and just awful! Mainly to Malik, but part of this book was that his relationship with the sisters was not what it was supposed to be. And you can truly see him as the villain in this book!

I loved that ending! I loved the direction it took, how it dealt with the ritual, and how everything played out! And that ending of the narration of Karina and Malik, where it switches over to the storyteller, I really enjoyed how that worked out!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to see what Roseanne A. Brown writes next!

Week 30 Review: The Adversary

From Goodreads:
From NYT bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the explosive conclusion to The Unseen!

When Dragos and Pia move to the Other land of Rhyacia, they hope starting a new life will bring safety and freedom to their family, especially their young baby, Niall. And at first their new home seems perfect… but looks are deceiving.

Beneath Rhyacia's idyllic façade an ancient, malevolent force lurks, waiting for the right opportunity to break free of its cage. When that opportunity comes, it strikes with devastating accuracy.

While Dragos has never backed down from a fight, he's also never encountered an enemy like this one before. How can he fight a foe who doesn't have a body? A foe who can invade and turn his own mind against him?

How can Dragos protect his family, when at any moment one of them may become the enemy?

As Dragos and Pia race against time to fight this unseen menace, they must also acknowledge a terrifying truth—when anyone can become the enemy, no one can be trusted.

An adversary who can trap the dragon poses a threat to everyone in Rhyacia, and that means no one is safe…

My Review:
Well I adored this book! After the ending of the first Rhyacia book, I needed to know how they were going to deal with this presence possessing Dragos. That was a killer cliff-hanger ending, and this book dived straight into what I needed to know!

Of course, the first priority is getting this entity out of Dragos' body. Even if he's contained now, doesn't mean that is sustainable. Part of doing so is finding out about who/whatever it is, so the next step-getting rid of or destroying him, can occur.

I really enjoyed all that we learned, it just gave this world even more depth, and more things to explore if we have the chance in the future. I loved all these developments, loved spending this time with these characters, and I enjoyed how it all wrapped up!

Honestly, that epilogue though! I have no idea what the future holds for the future of this world, all I know is that I do want more. That epilogue holds so many tantalizing prospects that I just want to explore, and I really hope we get the opportunity to do so!

This was a fantastic read, and I can't wait to see what Thea Harrison writes next!

Week 30 Review: Sing Me Forgotten

From Goodreads:
Isda does not exist. At least not beyond the opulent walls of the opera house.

Cast into a well at birth for being one of the magical few who can manipulate memories when people sing, she was saved by Cyril, the opera house's owner. Since that day, he has given her sanctuary from the murderous world outside. All he asks in return is that she use her power to keep ticket sales high—and that she stay out of sight. For if anyone discovers she survived, Isda and Cyril would pay with their lives.

But Isda breaks Cyril's cardinal rule when she meets Emeric Rodin, a charming boy who throws her quiet, solitary life out of balance. His voice is unlike any she's ever heard, but the real shock comes when she finds in his memories hints of a way to finally break free of her gilded prison.

Haunted by this possibility, Isda spends more and more time with Emeric, searching for answers in his music and his past. But the price of freedom is steeper than Isda could ever know. For even as she struggles with her growing feelings for Emeric, she learns that in order to take charge of her own destiny, she must become the monster the world tried to drown in the first place.

My Review:
Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It's a retelling of the Phantom of the Opera, which I've never seen, but I know the gist, because my mom loves the music for it. So I was interested in how it was going to play out!

This world where you can sell the amount of memories that you can actually remember to be used as currency-and there are people who can extract that, and there are people that can manipulate your memories while you sing. And the later are hated because of a two year period where a trio ruled, and caused a lot of death. It was such an interesting concept!

Because of what she is, something that she has no control over, Isda was supposed to be killed right after she was born, but she was rescued. She now spends her time at the opera. But it really sucks, because she's really musically gifted, but she can't show it. I felt so badly for her, but at the same time, I was worried about things going too far, which was a real possibility.

And oh, then there was Emeric. He has a talent as well, but he also has knowledge that she wants. I loved watching them interact, but once the plot started to snowball, oh, that hurt! I had to know what was going to happen next! And the ending, man, that was brutal! Fitting, but boy did it hurt!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Jessica S. Olson!

Week 30 Review: A Conjuring of Light

From Goodreads:
Witness the fate of beloved heroes - and enemies.

THE BALANCE OF POWER HAS FINALLY TIPPED...
The precarious equilibrium among four Londons has reached its breaking point. Once brimming with the red vivacity of magic, darkness casts a shadow over the Maresh Empire, leaving a space for another London to rise.

WHO WILL CRUMBLE?
Kell - once assumed to be the last surviving Antari - begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. And in the wake of tragedy, can Arnes survive?

WHO WILL RISE?
Lila Bard, once a commonplace - but never common - thief, has survived and flourished through a series of magical trials. But now she must learn to control the magic, before it bleeds her dry. Meanwhile, the disgraced Captain Alucard Emery of the Night Spire collects his crew, attempting a race against time to acquire the impossible.

WHO WILL TAKE CONTROL?
And an ancient enemy returns to claim a crown while a fallen hero tries to save a world in decay.

My Review:
Oh, this was such a great read! I've loved the rest of this series, and I was really excited to see how everything would go after the cliffhanger of book 2, and this one didn't disappoint! Things pick up pretty much right were they left off, and we were immedicably sprung into the action!

There was a lot going on with this book. First there's the panic from the cliffhanger ending, and dealing with all of that, with Rhy having been cut off from Kell's magic, that was the only thing keeping him alive. Oh, and the thing with Holland being possessed by the king from Black London?

And oh, the threat that the king poses! And what he does to London, that was just horrible. But we did see Rhy start to come into his own, and I really enjoyed watching him go on that journey. Plus there was the plan that his father made, that was something else!

There was a lot of pain and loss in this book. To having untrustworthy people within their shields, the stress of being within them, I wasn't expecting that! It's sad and bittersweet where it ended, but it was a fantastic journey along the way!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait for more from V.E. Schwab!
