Week 6 Review: Abandoned in Death

From Goodreads:
Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage's life hangs in the balance—in the new In Death novel by New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

The woman's body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Eve Dallas turns to the department's top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They're dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who'd be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?

When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder. But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind.

My Review:
This was another really great book in this series! We're over 50 books now, and they got married in book 4, right? So they've now been married for 50 books, which is a weird idea to contemplate, especially since this series has been going on for so long, even if it took a shorter time to get here, given the 2 releases a year for as long as I've been current on this series! Mind-boggling! Though their 3rd wedding anniversary is coming up now!

One thing that was different and I really enjoyed about this book was that we got a flashback to the past, of this woman who builds a new life. And that would be followed up by a perspective from one of the victims, Mary Jane. I loved seeing what these women's lives were like, the woman who left her son who is doing this to the second woman. Loved what it added to the series!

This mystery is personal to Eve, the first body was left in a playground near Mavis and Leonardo's new home, a playground that Eve has visited. And the note says Bad Mommy, making moms the victims in this case-and Mavis is currently pregnant. So there's that added worry. And this case does bring up memories of her own mother, Stella, which wasn't great for her or Roarke, but she did give herself a little bit of fun!

Who the bad guy was, and how they caught him? That was pretty shocking! I kinda love that she went there, because this is something that I hope we'll explore in further books. But man, it's hard to talk about it without spoiling it, but let me tell you, it's one heck of a reveal!

This was another fantastic book in this series, and I can't wait for the next mystery!
