Week 19 Review: Game Changer

From Goodreads:
All it takes is one hit on the football field, and suddenly Ash's life doesn't look quite the way he remembers it.

Impossible though it seems, he's been hit into another dimension—and keeps on bouncing through worlds that are almost-but-not-really his own.

The changes start small, but they quickly spiral out of control as Ash slides into universes where he has everything he's ever wanted, universes where society is stuck in the past…universes where he finds himself looking at life through entirely different eyes.

And if he isn't careful, the world he's learning to see more clearly could blink out of existence…

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! The whole concept of being the center of the universe for a bit-it's such an interesting concept. And the different worlds that he brought into being with the various choices-conscious and unconscious-were so great to read!

This is a book about seeing what it's like to be someone else, to experience things that who you are as a person, wouldn't. He can't (or at least doesn't, not sure if he can) become a person of colour, but he does make changes that shows him just how difficult it can be-and how little has been done since the 60's.

There's also the world where he was gay-and the world where he was a girl. Both experiences that he'd normally not have. I loved how that opened up his world view. To walk a mile in someone else's shoes-because they're your shoes, you've changed, was great character development!

There was also a running side plot about abusive relationships, of Layton, the quarterback, and his girlfriend Katie (and Ash, in that last world.) Of how you know it's abusive, but you do you help, and how to you not make it worse? That it's not so easy as to say, it's done, when there have been good moments, as well the bad. It's a difficult topic and I'm glad it was brought up and discussed.

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Neal Schusterman!
