From Goodreads:
In this mesmerizing sequel to the New York Times bestselling Girls of Paper and Fire, Lei and Wren have escaped their oppressive lives in the Hidden Palace, but soon learn that freedom comes with a terrible cost.
Lei, the naive country girl who became a royal courtesan, is now known as the Moonchosen, the commoner who managed to do what no one else could. But slaying the cruel Demon King wasn't the end of the plan---it's just the beginning. Now Lei and her warrior love Wren must travel the kingdom to gain support from the far-flung rebel clans. The journey is made even more treacherous thanks to a heavy bounty on Lei's head, as well as insidious doubts that threaten to tear Lei and Wren apart from within.
Meanwhile, an evil plot to eliminate the rebel uprising is taking shape, fueled by dark magic and vengeance. Will Lei succeed in her quest to overthrow the monarchy and protect her love for Wren, or will she fall victim to the sinister magic that seeks to destroy her?
The epic romance of Lei and Wren comes to a breathtaking conclusion in the explosive finale to the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Girls of Paper and Fire series.
'Don't struggle, Lei-zhi. It's time to take you back to the Hidden Palace. You're going home.'
The jaw-dropping conclusion to Girls of Storm and Shadow left the fates of Lei and Wren hanging in the balance. There's one thing Lei knows - she can never return to the Hidden Palace. The trauma and tragedy she suffered behind those opulent walls will plague her forever. She cannot be trapped there with the sadistic king again, especially without Wren.
The last time Lei saw the girl she loved, Wren was fighting an army of soldiers in a furious battle to the death.
With the two girls torn apart and each in great peril, will they reunite at last, or have their destinies diverged forever?
My Review:
These books, man, they were so fantastic to read! I loved the first book, and I was pretty desperate to continue the series, so I picked them up as soon as I could and just devoured them! They were both just so great to read!
I love Lei and Wren's relationship, I just love the two of them together. They're not perfect, but they fi together so well. It was so great to have them together for all of Storm and Shadow-and hard for them to be apart in Fate and Fury.
The way that these stories were told was really great. Storm and Shadow was mainly Lei, with some one offs from various characters, mainly at the palace. And Fate and Fury was half Lei and half Wren, ad I really enjoyed seeing these different perspectives!
It turns out that my theory of what was causing the Sickness was wrong, but I really liked what the actual cause turned out to be! It tied into other parts of the story-and gave more of a reason in those areas for bringing down the king!
A good deal of this series is about trauma, of various sorts, including sexual and violence, and of healing from that trauma. It's not an easy story, but it's really great that it's one being told, to help all those that are going through a similar situation. It's also about the hard choices that we make, and how to deal with them.
One thing that I really loved was that how much closure that we got! In most books, I always want more after the ending, of what their lives will be like. And while that wasn't exactly what we got, we did get the start of the healing, which was fantastic!
These were just two amazing books, I loved reading them, and I need to read more by Natasha Ngan!
