Week 26 Review: Thicker Than Water

From Goodreads:
It was called a haven for runaway teens. In truth, it was a nightmare, one that ended in fiery violence sixteen years ago. Or so its survivors believed…

Syracuse news anchor Julie Jones is afraid. Her long-dead past was resurrected when a blackmailer threatened to expose secrets that could destroy her. Then the man was found dead—his throat cut with a knife from Julie's own kitchen. Now a new, faceless enemy wants more than money. This time Julie stands to lose the most precious thing of all—her teenage daughter, Dawn.

Julie finds herself with one unlikely ally, Sean MacKenzie. A journalist with a flair for the sensational, Sean covers the worst humanity has to offer. Julie Jones is hiding something that terrifies her, and he's determined to find out what. He just can't decide whether his goal is to expose her or save her.

Julie will do anything to protect her daughter. But someone else is watching, willing to do whatever it takes to avenge a past that cannot be forgotten.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic mystery! I really enjoyed the story of two people in the news business-in different formats, for now, dealing with this investigation-of a guy who was blackmailing her. They did not get along, until they were forced to work together, and it was so great!

I will note, that this book is almost 20 years old at this point, and oh, was that easy to tell, with the technology and such. I grew up in a time where we had a house line, and had no need of beepers. So the only times I knew about their existence was when they were referenced in media like this. I have no idea when they were phased out, but it's wild to think of how things have changed since this book came out!

This mystery was really entertaining to read. Given that he was blackmailing her, that put her in a tense position. Add in that Sean keeps being there in these moments where she's pretty vulnerable, but they have a very antagonist relationship, well, the romance and mystery worked very well together!

That ending though? This is the Mordecai Young series, so I'm excited to see how all that is going to play out. Because things are just getting started, we have Lizzie who, as Mordecai sees it, betrayed him. I can't wait to read her story nex!

I had a really great time reading this book, and I can't wait to continue!
