Week 39 Review: So This is Ever After

From Goodreads:
Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this subversive, "delightfully original and whimsical" (Kirkus Reviews) young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it…and to stay alive.

Arek hadn't thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he's finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don't come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next.

As a temporary safeguard, Arek's best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she's dead. Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

With his eighteenth birthday only three months away, and only Matt in on the secret, Arek embarks on a desperate bid to find a spouse to save his life—starting with his quest companions. But his attempts at wooing his friends go painfully and hilariously wrong…until he discovers that love might have been in front of him all along.

My Review:
This was such a fun read! The idea of the after the prophecy is completed, after the bad guy is slain, this is the what now? And I loved it. Arek was such a fun character to read about, I loved his relationship with Matt, and the gang that they had around them!

This book is like classic miscommunication. Arek has feelings for Matt, and was going to tell him after the quest was over-but then he was King, and had to have the soul bind, and didn't want to pressure Matt into anything. If they'd just talked to one another, it would've been so much easier. But less entertaining to read!

The idea of bonding with one of his friends, it does make sense, they know one another, maybe not all the details of their various pasts, but who they are as people. So it was pretty hilarious watching him use the dead princess's diary as a guideline on wooing his various friends. Oh, the situations that he ends up in!

All in all, I loved everything about this book, from these characters who followed the prophecy and removed an evil leader, and ending leading themselves, to the world and the magic, and the the prophecy was mainly right-just got one small but vital part wrong! I just had such a great time reading it!

This was a really great read, and I can't wait to read more by F.T. Lukens!
