Week 41 Review A Forgery of Roses

From Goodeads:
Myra Whitlock has a gift. One many would kill for.

She's an artist whose portraits alter people's real-life bodies, a talent she must hide from those who would kidnap, blackmail, and worse in order to control it. Guarding that secret is the only way to keep her younger sister safe now that their parents are gone.

But one frigid night, the governor's wife discovers the truth and threatens to expose Myra if she does not complete a special portrait that would resurrect the governor's dead son. Desperate, Myra ventures to his legendary stone mansion.

Once she arrives, however, it becomes clear the boy's death was no accident. Someone dangerous lurks within these glittering halls. Someone harboring a disturbing obsession with portrait magic.

Myra cannot do the painting until she knows what really happened, so she turns to the governor's older son, a captivating redheaded poet. Together, they delve into the family's most shadowed affairs, racing to uncover the truth before the secret Myra spent her life concealing makes her the killer's next victim.

My Review:
This was such a great read! I had a really great time with Jessica S. Olson's first book, and this one sounded really great as well, and it was! This was a great gothic mystery, with interesting characters, and I couldn't put it down!

It's two for two for interesting and unique magic systems. That there are Prodigies, who can paint how things are-and then do another paint to change them-is so interesting! That their god was the Artist, and that painters are frowned upon, added another layer to this world, and I really enjoyed it!

Loved watching Myra and her story unfold! She's got a wicked tongue, I loved her come backs, and she was strong and determined, to try and make a better life for her and her sister. Watching her deal with the Governor's family, investigate the death of Will, interactions with August, it was all entertaining to read!

Unlike her first book, there's a real potential for there to be a sequel to this book. After all, that epilogue left things in a place where future conflict is bound to happen, and there is information that for Myra's sake, I hope we find out! I would really like more!

This was a really great read, and I really hope that we get a sequel!
