Week 21 Review: The Salt Grows Heavy

From Goodreads:
From Cassandra Khaw, USA Today bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, comes The Salt Grows Heavy, a razor-sharp and bewitching fairy tale of discovering the darkness in the world, and the darkness within oneself.

You may think you know how the fairy tale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes.

On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three "saints" who control them.

The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

My Review:
Well this book was creepy, graphic and very descriptive in a medical sort of way, and I couldn't get enough! That it's a retelling of The Little Mermaid, but the more brutal version, yeah, it was just a little bit terrifying to read!

I don't remember if we got the name of the mermaid. But this story starts off with the kingdom having being devoured by her and the princes' daughters. Which is just fitting, given how he treated her, trying to make her human, shove away any unhuman traits that she had.

With the plague doctor, I really enjoyed their connection, they were the only ones who survived the newborn mermaids. But that's not the point of this story. The point is the small village, where these three medical professionals have taken over the town.

What those three were doing to the town was horrible, because it was children, and they were making them kill one another, and be revived, and kill the next on. Of course the plague doctor had to stop it, because they were created by these three. Yeah, things don't quite go to plan. That end was epic!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Cassandra Khaw!
