Week 33 Reviews: A Touch of Gold, A Curse of Gold

From Goodreads:
King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father's wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.

Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn't until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn't fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she'd ever believed.

Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora's journey cost?

From Goodreads:
Curses and queens. Pirates and kings. Gods and magic. The final saga of a cursed queen, a vengeful Greek god, and a dazzling kingdom in the balance.

After barely surviving thieving, bloodthirsty pirates and a harrowing quest at sea to retrieve her stolen treasure, Kora finds readjusting to palace life just as deadly. Kora's people openly turn against her, threatening to overthrow her as heir to the throne—a cursed queen who has angered Dionysus. When Dionysus puts out a challenge to kill the girl with the golden touch and burn down her kingdom, it's not just her future on the throne in danger. Kora's life and entire kingdom are now on contract.

As bold and brave as ever, Kora sets out to find Dionysus, the very person who is trying to kill her, on the mysterious disappearing island of Jipper. Kora has no other choice. If she wants to save her kingdom and have any chance at reversing her father's curse, she will have to enter into a deadly game with Dionysus, the greatest trickster the world, or the underworld, has ever seen.

My Review:
I had a fantastic time reading these books! I loved this retelling of King Midas, that he has a daughter that he turned into gold, and how Dionysus really screwed up the family that had become royal. Kora was such a fantastic character, and I loved her story!

Kora starts off in the first book having been kept isolated in the palace. What with her having been a gold statue for a bit, and after, with skin of gold, and the ability to take gold from one thing and make another thing gold. But only family knows that. Until gold that's connected to her dad is stolen, and she sets out on quest to recover it.

I worried about what turned out to be the twist until the twist was revealed. There was just something off, and once we found out, that made much more sense, and I'm glad that everything was revealed, because oh, it could've gone very wrong if it wasn't!

One thing that has me wondering, was this set in a made up land with the Greek gods pulled in, or in a historical place in and or around Greece? Because the first book just barely mentioned him because of the fact that he gave King Midas the ability to turn things into gold, and the subsequent "cure." But the rest of the gods don't come into play until the second book so I'm a bit confused there...

The second book opened up the world, with the quest that involved Triton, of whom they met his cast of loves in the first book. He was a demi-god, so there was plenty of arrogance there, but I loved his emotional journey alongside their physical one!

These were both really fantastic to read, and I can't wait to read more by Annie Sullivan!
