Week 32 Review: None of the Above

From Goodreads:
A groundbreaking story about a teenage girl who discovers she was born intersex . . . and what happens when her secret is revealed to the entire school. Incredibly compelling and sensitively told, None of the Above is a thought-provoking novel that explores what it means to be a boy, a girl, or something in between.

What if everything you knew about yourself changed in an instant?

When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. She's a champion hurdler with a full scholarship to college and she's madly in love with her boyfriend. In fact, she's decided that she's ready to take things to the next level with him.

But Kristin's first time isn't the perfect moment she's planned--something is very wrong. A visit to the doctor reveals the truth: Kristin is intersex, which means that though she outwardly looks like a girl, she has male chromosomes, not to mention boy "parts."

Dealing with her body is difficult enough, but when her diagnosis is leaked to the whole school, Kristin's entire identity is thrown into question. As her world unravels, can she come to terms with her new self?

My Review:
It was really fantastic to read these books! I mean, I hadn't really heard of intersex, or the historically derogatory term before, but that just meant that I got to follow long on the journey with Kristin as she learned about it!

Kristin didn't initially know that she wasn't like most guys. Sure, there were things about her that were different, like she never got her period, and she didn't have to shave. And then she discovers some more things, like the pain of her first time. And second, leading to the discover that she's intersex.

The hardest things, it seemed to me, for her to face, was initially dealing with this fact, since it's not something most people thing about. And the other, was having her high school find out about it, and dealing with all of that. That was not fun at all!

I really enjoyed her and Darren, who weren't an immediate thing, but their relationship grew over time, since they knew each other from where their parents were dating, and then while this book was going on, he was dating another girl. But they spent some really great time together, and then other things happened, and yeah, it was just really great to read to read this book!

Favourite line: "Yes, that is an appropriately basic task for this hapless male. ME STIR. USE STICK." Oh, Darren is so funny!

Yeah, really fantastic book, and I can't wait to read more by I.W. Gregorio!
