From bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a gripping and heartfelt story about a girl faced with a shocking revelation when her mom dies and she's forced to move in with her father's "real" family.
Michaela is a junior in high school, close with her single mom. Her dad lives a few towns away and pops in and out of her life only on holidays and birthdays. They barely know each other beyond surface obligations.
That is, until her mom dies. Suddenly on her own, Michaela has to move in with her Dad . . . and learns he's been married with kids all this time, and she was the product of an affair. Before she can even grieve her mother, Michaela is thrust into a strange house with a stepmom and three half-siblings, including new sister Emery, who is in the same grade and less than thrilled at the prospect of sharing her room and school life. Will Michaela be able to let go of everything she's ever known-and find herself anew-with a family who didn't ask for her in the first place?
My Review:
Oh was this a fantastic book! I love Rachel Vincent's writing, and this sounded like it would pack a heck of an emotional punch, with her dad having a full other family that wasn't her. There were a lot of emotional moments, and I really enjoyed it!
It does mention, either in the front or the back, that there's no bad guys. And there aren't, there's just a few assholes, and there's these people who are in this tough situation. The dad shouldn't have cheated, and now they're all paying for it, but it doesn't mean that they always handle it in the best of ways. Especially with the loss of her mom.
Between that and the musical, her relationship with Emery is pretty rocky. I had a great time watching them find a relationship that worked for them, given that they are living in the same room, and Michaela starts dating Emery's ex. It was complicated, but I really enjoyed reading it!
I think my favourite part was Grammy. It hurt, but oh, was she a character! But another is the play. I've seen the 2014 movie, but that was more when it came out. But I watched it again, and the song that this book got this title from was, it fit with this story so much. So that was a pretty great choice, it all came together really well!
This was such a great read, and I can't wait for whatever is next from Rachel Vincent!
