June Hur, critically acclaimed author of The Silence of Bones and The Forest of Stolen Girls, returns with The Red Palace - a third evocative, atmospheric historical mystery perfect for fans of Courtney Summers and Kerri Maniscalco.
To enter the palace means to walk a path stained in blood....
Joseon (Korea), 1758. There are few options available to illegitimate daughters in the capital city, but through hard work and study, 18-year-old Hyeon has earned a position as a palace nurse. All she wants is to keep her head down, do a good job, and perhaps finally win her estranged father's approval.
But Hyeon is suddenly thrust into the dark and dangerous world of court politics when someone murders four women in a single night, and the prime suspect is Hyeon's closest friend and mentor. Determined to prove her beloved teacher's innocence, Hyeon launches her own secret investigation.
In her hunt for the truth, she encounters Eojin, a young police inspector also searching for the killer. When evidence begins to point to the Crown Prince himself as the murderer, Hyeon and Eojin must work together to search the darkest corners of the palace to uncover the deadly secrets behind the bloodshed.
My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I don't know much about the culture, but it added a different dimension to the mystery, in more ways then one, with the motives, with the investigatory methods, and just who these characters were. It was so great!
Hyeon is a bastard, and a girl at that. So there's not very many options open for her, but she really wants to be a nurse-and she's made it to the highest level by becoming a palace nurse. Of course things become complicated when there's a murder where she learned, and her mentor is the main suspect. So of course Hyeon starts an investigation!
I kinda hated her dad. Even if by their measures, she wasn't a good daughter-that didn't mean that he was a good father. I mean, he kicked the whole family out, for what she did? That's completely unreasonable, and being a horrible parent to his other child. And that's not saying anything about how he treated her in the first place. I'm glad for how it worked out, but man, I did not like him!
This mystery was really intriguing, and how it tied into the palace and the palace politics. It came together piece by piece, and it made sense in the end. Plus working with Eojin was really great, I loved watching them work together!
I had a great time reading this book, and I'll have to check out other books by June Hur!
