Today's teaser comes from Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare, page 53.

"In fact, he had seemed impatient when, hours after the sun had set, Lucie had pointed out that they needed to eat. She suspected it had been a long time since Malcolm had had a houseguest."

Week 4 Reviews:
The Chase

Random:

OK, so I got 23 posts in 7 days, and it was a really nice, quite week, I had the doggies to myself for another week (and I have them until Saturday) and I had a couple of days off last week, so that was nice to just get in those cuddles! Can't wait for this coming week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Chain of Thorns!

James and Cordelia must save London—and their marriage—in this thrilling and highly anticipated conclusion to the Last Hours series from the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Thorns is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs has lost everything that matters to her. In only a few short weeks, she has seen her father murdered, her plans to become parabatai with her best friend, Lucie, destroyed, and her marriage to James Herondale crumble before her eyes. Even worse, she is now bound to an ancient demon, Lilith, stripping her of her power as a Shadowhunter.

After fleeing to Paris with Matthew Fairchild, Cordelia hopes to forget her sorrows in the city’s glittering nightlife. But reality intrudes when shocking news comes from home: Tatiana Blackthorn has escaped the Adamant Citadel, and London is under new threat by the Prince of Hell, Belial.

Cordelia returns to a London riven by chaos and dissent. The long-kept secret that Belial is James and Lucie’s grandfather has been revealed by an unexpected enemy, and the Herondales find themselves under suspicion of dealings with demons. Cordelia longs to protect James but is torn between a love for James she has long believed hopeless, and the possibility of a new life with Matthew. Nor can her friends help—ripped apart by their own secrets, they seem destined to face what is coming alone.

For time is short, and Belial’s plan is about to crash into the Shadowhunters of London like a deadly wave, one that will separate Cordelia, Lucie, and the Merry Thieves from help of any kind. Left alone in a shadowy London, they must face Belial’s deadly army. If Cordelia and her friends are going to save their city—and their families—they will have to muster their courage, swallow their pride, and trust one another again. For if they fail, they may lose everything—even their souls.

Wheel of TBR #140, January 29th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read Steal the Dragon by Patricia Briggs, A Fatal Illusion by Anna Lee Huber, Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco, and Ungodly by Kendare Blake.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this month, the picked Reading Challenge. I read The Penultimate Hours by Cassandra Clare, Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare, Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare, Tease by Sophie Jordan, so I've read 9/9+.

For this coming month, the wheel picked Dying to Read.

Prompts Used This Week:

The Reward Challenge Update #593, January 29th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read The Chase which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Steal the Demon which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, When Demons Walk which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Heart Stings which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, A Fatal Illusion which counts 5 times as a Historical Fiction 2023 Book, NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book and a WoW Book, In Her Highlander's Bed which counts 4 times as a Historical Fiction 2023 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book and a WoW Book, The Rift, Part 1 which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, The Rift, Part 2 which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, The Rift, Part 3 which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Silver Under Nightfall which counts 3 times as a SAC 2023 Book and a WoW Book, The Penultimate Hours which counts 3 times as a Historical Fiction 2023 Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Chain of Gold which counts 3 times as a Historical Fiction 2023 Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Chain of Iron which counts 4 times as a Historical Fiction 2023 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book and a WoW Book, Ungodly which counts 4 times as a End of Series 2023 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book and a WTC Book.

Week 4 Review: Ungodly

From Goodreads:
For the Goddess of Wisdom, what Athena didn't know could fill a book. That's what Ares said.

So she was wrong about some things. So the assault on Olympus left them beaten and scattered and possibly dead. So they have to fight the Fates themselves, who, it turns out, are the source of the gods' illness. And sure, Athena is stuck in the underworld, holding the body of the only hero she has ever loved.

But Hermes is still topside, trying to power up Andie and Henry before he runs out of time and dies, or the Fates arrive to eat their faces.

And Cassandra is up there somewhere too. On a quest for death. With the god of death.

Just because things haven't gone exactly according to plan, it doesn't mean they've lost. They've only mostly lost. And there's a big difference.

My Review:
This was a fantastic read! This is the final book in this series, and I'm getting a sense of what Kendare Blake is like for finishing series, they're satisfying, but they're not all sunshine and rainbows, there's costs, and there's loss, and they're just so good!

Everybody is in a rough space at the moment after the end of the last book. Athena is in the border of the Underworld with Odysseus, so he can't die, but he can't heal. Casandra and Calypso are off trying to kill the gods. And Andie, Henry and Hermes are home, not knowing if everybody else is alive or not.

The threat of the Fates has been shown that they are the big bads, that Atropos is the one causing the gods to die. But that Cassandra is also connected to them, that's pretty important! I love watching all their paths and how they came back together!

That ending was just something else! This series doesn't pull its punches, and yeah, the events in that ending was pretty brutal. Things worked out in the end, but that doesn't take away from all that they went through throughout this series!

I loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Kendare Blake!

Week 4 Reviews: The Penultimate Hours, Chain of Gold, Chain of Iron

From Goodreads:
Welcome to the Penultimate Hours! A collection of short stories covering the various characters in The Last Hours, originally released monthly in the leadup to Chain of Gold. The Penultimate Hours also contains two special extras: a letter from Lucie to Cordelia and a letter from Ragnor to Magnus. All collected here for your reading delight!

From Goodreads:
Chain of Gold is the first novel in a new trilogy that stars the Shadowhunters of Edwardian London.

Welcome to Edwardian London, a time of electric lights and long shadows, the celebration of artistic beauty and the wild pursuit of pleasure, with demons waiting in the dark. For years there has been peace in the Shadowhunter world. James and Lucie Herondale, children of the famous Will and Tessa, have grown up in an idyll with their loving friends and family, listening to stories of good defeating evil and love conquering all. But everything changes when the Blackthorn and Carstairs families come to London…and so does a remorseless and inescapable plague.

James Herondale longs for a great love, and thinks he has found it in the beautiful, mysterious Grace Blackthorn. Cordelia Carstairs is desperate to become a hero, save her family from ruin, and keep her secret love for James hidden. When disaster strikes the Shadowhunters, James, Cordelia and their friends are plunged into a wild adventure which will reveal dark and incredible powers, and the true cruel price of being a hero…and falling in love.

The Shadowhunters must catch a killer in Edwardian London in this dangerous and romantic sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling novel Chain of Gold, from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Iron is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs seems to have everything she ever wanted. She's engaged to marry James Herondale, the boy she has loved since childhood. She has a new life in London with her best friend Lucie Herondale and James's charming companions, the Merry Thieves. She is about to be reunited with her beloved father. And she bears the sword Cortana, a legendary hero's blade.

But the truth is far grimmer. James and Cordelia's marriage is a lie, arranged to save Cordelia's reputation. James is in love with the mysterious Grace Blackthorn whose brother, Jesse, died years ago in a terrible accident. Cortana burns Cordelia's hand when she touches it, while her father has grown bitter and angry. And a serial murderer is targeting the Shadowhunters of London, killing under cover of darkness, then vanishing without a trace.

Together with the Merry Thieves, Cordelia, James, and Lucie must follow the trail of the knife-wielding killer through the city's most dangerous streets. All the while, each is keeping a shocking secret: Lucie, that she plans to raise Jesse from the dead; Cordelia, that she has sworn a dangerous oath of loyalty to a mysterious power; and James, that he is being drawn further each night into the dark web of his grandfather, the arch-demon Belial. And that he himself may be the killer they seek.

My first review of Chain of Gold
My Review:
I loved reading these books! I love her writing so much, and I loved reading Chain of Gold the first time, and I was a little anxious going in, because this is two thirds of a series, which means that the ending of Chain of Iron was going to be hard, but Chain of Thorns comes out next week, and I'll be reading it right away!

Getting to have bits and pieces of these characters lives before the start of the series was really great, to see the worries about Thomas and his health, of time that Lucie, Cordelia and James spent together. The very short paragraphs of Mathew and when he thought his mom was cheating, that's a full length story in the Shadowmarket anthology, was just heartbreaking!

Chain of Gold was fantastic again, getting to know these characters and what's going on in their lives, all the complications and boy, are there a lot of characters, because there was a decent sized cast in the first book, and almost all of them have had kids. Watching them investigate was fantastic!

Chain of Iron was tougher, because we know about Grace and the bracelet, and I just wanted to make things better! It was difficult to watch them go through all these worries, and I need to know how it's all going to end! It was a great book, but oh, it'll be even better when you can go straight onto Chain of Thorns!

I loved reading these books, and I can't wait to finish out this trilogy!

Week 4 Review: Silver Under Nightfall

From Goodreads:
Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.

Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy's father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won't do his reputation any favors. When he's offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that's plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.

It's one he's certain he'll regret.

But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he's been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

My Review:
Oh wow, I loved reading this book! There's a good chance that this will be one of my top favourite books of the year, or be very close to the top! I had such a great time reading it, it was an incredible story and these characters were so amazing!

The world that Rin Chupeco has created, of vampires and the courts and the history is just stunning! I loved the scope of it, and with this new zombie vampire creation going on, causing havoc, I couldn't get enough! I loved how there was science, and that cold Malekh was the one pursuing it, was really great!

All three of the main characters had depth. Remy is tied to his father because an incident when he was a child crippled his father, and he has to avenge his mother's death. He never thinks about himself, puts himself at risk for others, and they hate him for what he is and that's a really awful situation! Plus he doesn't think he's worthy of anything, and I felt so badly for him!

Malekh has been a vampire a long time, and has a complicated past. He was a part of the First Court, but the leader had the ability to compel, make he do what he didn't want to.And Xiaodan has the ability to basically be the sun, which is a vampire's weakness, and she's been ostracized for it. I loved the three of them together!

This book was half their romance, with them coaxing Remy into their bed, because of his issues, he does take effort. And the half was the investigation into the Rot, and all the politics there, there's a lot going on, and the way that it ended...wow!

I desperately need a sequel, and looking at other reviews of this book, I'm not alone in that sentiment. First off, this world and these characters are too awesome to just only have one book. Secondly, there's the whole plot of his mom and the threat that she faces that has to be dealt with, and I want to see it!

I loved reading this book, and I really, really hope that we'll get a sequel!

Week 4 Reviews: The Rift, Part 1, The Rift, Part 2, The Rift, Part 3

From Goodreads:
Avatar Aang asks his friends to help him honor Yangchen's Festival—one of the highest Air Nomad holidays, which hasn't been celebrated in over one hundred years.

But cryptic visits from the spirit of Avatar Yangchen herself lead Aang to discover a jointly owned Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom refinery—operating on land sacred to the Airbenders! Is this the cause of the pollution Aang finds there, or is a more mysterious menace afoot?

Team Avatar find themselves up to their necks in trouble as mysterious forces threaten to destroy land once sacred to the Airbenders! While Aang journeys to the spirit world in search of clues, Toph faces off against her own past!

The spirits are restless!

As Avatar Aang and his friends confront an ancient spirit determined to destroy a town on land sacred to Air Nomads, Toph and Aang find themselves on opposing sides in a battle of gigantic proportions. If Toph and Aang don't put aside their differences, there's more at stake than just their friendship!

My Review:
I had a really great time reading this graphic novel! It's the first story arc that I'm reading for the first time, and I'm so excited to continue on, see what Team Avatar is doing after the events of the show! Spending time with these characters is just so great!

One thing that I loved, was the return of the Cabbage Man! He was a running gag in the series, and how his cabbages just kept being destroyed by Team Avatar's adventures. So it was really great for him to make an appearance in this media!

This story arc focused on traditions, and why we do the things we do, in two ways-Aang and this festival, and Toph with her dad. The former provided a lot of the external conflict, and the later provided the internal conflict. I loved watching Toph stand up for herself, she's done some amazing things!

The Rift draws it's title from the rift between the Human world and the Spirit Realm, that the Avatar is supposed to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, with Aang's century sleep, things have been forgotten, which leads to the trouble. I loved the message this story gave us about progress, but it is still a bit bittersweet!

These were such great reads, and I can't wait to continue on!

Week 4 Review: In Her Highlander's Bed

From Goodreads:
For fans of Outlander, New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands' newest installment of the Highland Brides series brings us a sweeping tale of passion as a laird's swim in a loch leads to the love of a lifetime.

An invigorating swim in the loch was exactly what Calan Campbell, Laird of Kilcairn, needed after defeating his enemies in battle. What he didn't need was a thief running away with his plaid while he swam. Calan gave chase and managed to catch the lad, only the lad turned out to be a lass, and obviously a lady. Having hit her head when he'd tackled her to the ground, the woman was now unconscious and couldn't explain how she had ended up bruised and naked in his woods. He'd have to take her back to his castle and tend her wounds to learn that.

Kidnapped and forced to wed her clan’s enemy, Allissaid MacFarlane had risked death to escape. But after a struggle over a plaid she tried to "borrow," she awakens in a strange bed with a strange man seated in a chair beside her. Unsure if he is friend or foe, she claims not to remember her own name or how she'd come to be in the clearing. However, the more time she spends with Calan, the more she falls for this strong, honorable laird. She soon decides she can trust him with her life. . . but can she trust him with her heart?

My Review:
This was a really fantastic book! It's not quite as funny as the other books, because it starts off with her being kidnapped, and then it skips to her "borrowing" Calan's plaid, after having being forcibly married, had the marriage consummation attempted, and viciously beaten. So she's healing for most of this book, so there's less chance of accidents and attempted murder like previous books.

Another reason why there might have been less events was that they know who the bad guy is. And they know that they have to keep where she is a secret, so she does spend a lot of time in the bedchamber, once she's sure she's safe there. Which left a lot of time for them to get to know one another, of how they're similar in a lot of ways, and I adored watching them fall in love!

Though the one scene-their marriage consummation, where she's been advised by his mom what it was like, the sword, scabbard, pain, blood, while true, and how much she panics, was just a little bit funny. I mean, he got advice too, and it worked out in the end!

This book does potentially set up a new couple. Calan's sister, Inghinn, and Alick, the last single Buchannan (though I'm still holding out hope that their one brother is still alive!) have some sparks, and there were conversations had around them...We could go there next or in the future, and there's still two more MacFarlane sisters of marrying age...

I had a great time reading this book, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Week 4 Review: A Fatal Illusion

From Goodreads:
New parents Lady Kiera Darby and Sebastian Gage look forward to introducing Sebastian's father to his granddaughter, but instead find themselves investigating an attempt on his life...

Yorkshire, England. August 1832. Relations between Sebastian Gage and his father have never been easy, especially since the discovery that Lord Gage has been concealing the existence of an illegitimate son. But when Lord Gage is nearly fatally attacked on a journey to Scotland, Sebastian and Kiera race to his side. Given the tumult over the recent passage of the Reform Bill and the Anatomy Act, in which Lord Gage played a part, Sebastian wonders if the attack could be politically motivated.

But something suspicious is afoot in the sleepy village where Lord Gage is being cared for. The townspeople treat Sebastian and Kiera with hostility when it becomes clear they intend to investigate, and rumors of mysterious disappearances and highway robberies plague the area. Lord Gage's survival is far from assured, and Sebastian and Kiera must scramble to make the pieces fit before a second attempt at murder is more successful than the first.

My Review:
This was another fantastic book in this series! I really enjoy watching Kiera and Sebastian investigate these cases, and this was another where it was personal, because his dad was the one that was targeted. And it was such a great read!

The pair have always had a difficult relationship with Lord Gage. He's got an image of what he'd like his son's life to be, no matter what Sebastian wants, and it's caused plenty of conflict. While this attack happened when he was coming up to see Emma for the first time, it's also the first time that they've seen each other in person after finding out about how he cheated, and has a son that he won't recognize.

We got to see another side of him in this book, he was injured, and that's a weakness, and he can't stand weakness. But there's also Emma, who's adorable. I really enjoyed getting to know him more, to find out why he's so hard and not great at relationships!

The case was interesting, they're in a small town that claims that it's where Robin Hood had his adventures, and there's a current band of Merry Thieves going on right now-which complicates matters with the attack, because the methods are different, but the townsfolk want to protect the group, because times have been tough recently. So that was pretty difficult. I loved how it turned out!

I loved reading this book, and I can't wait for whatever comes next!

Week 4 Review: Heart Stings

From Goodreads:
Heart stings can be the most dangerous wounds of all . . .

Lorelei Parker has had plenty of "heart stings" in her life—moments that are both happy and sad. With her grandmother's recent marriage, Lorelei has had far more good times than bad lately.

That all changes when a ruthless Ashland underworld boss starts threatening her, but Lorelei is determined to figure out why the other crime boss is so interested in her thriving business. She vows to use her elemental Ice and metal magic to do whatever it takes to defend herself and her family.

Also in the mix is the mercurial Hugh Tucker. Lorelei doesn't know what the vampire is up to, or if he's a friend or an enemy. Tucker might even be something else, something more—if Lorelei can stay alive long enough to figure out whose side he's really on . . .

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I love her writing and this series, and while it's done for now, at least, Gin's story, it was really great to see Lorelei get a happy ending! She's been a part of the series for a good deal of time now, so I'm glad that we got her story!

Hugh Tucker has is a newer character to the series, after the first big bad of the series was defeated, and he was the henchman of the next big bad. He was redeemed throughout, but the focus was never really on him until now.

When he was kept captive by Gin, it was on Lorelei's property, and she spent a lot of time watching him. It's been a while since I read that book (or those books, I'm not sure) but I'm pretty sure there was some banter that led to their relationship in this book deepening!

Oh man, the bad guy in this book, was just awful! I mean, he was so entitled, and it didn't really seem like he had two brain cells to rub together. I guess he did, because he figured out one thing, but other then that, just awful. He earned the end he got!

This was a fantastic read, and I can't wait to read more by Jennifer Estep!

From Goodreads:
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME

Shamera had spent most of her young life as sorceress and thief, stealing from Southwood's nobility to survive. Now Sham must face the greatest test of her skills...

A killer has struck Southwood, claiming the lives of nobles. Lord Kerim, Reeve of Southwood, turns to Sham for help. Posing as his mistress, she delves behind castle walls to find the killer. But this murderer is no mortal and Sham must use all of her magical wisdom to send the demon away. Because the city of Southwood has nowhere to hide--and no time to run...

My Review:
I freaking loved reading these books! Putting off reading them until the next week, because of reviews and how my mind works, was just awful! And the wait to read the final book is going to be just as bad, because I want to read it now, they're just so great!

First off, I have to say, Rialla is so incredibly strong! She escaped slavery, and made a new life for herself, but given this chance to abolish slavery where she was kept-but having to basically become a slave again, I can't even imagine.

This series is pretty dark. There's not much graphic that's depicted, but some of the events that happen are horrendous. The stakes are pretty big, though, too, given that some of the threats are gods and demons, respectively!

When Demons Walk fulfills the threat of Steal the Demon, with the East invading, on behalf of the god. I'm wondering why they weren't stopped, but there are some good people that have come, like Lord Kerim. I can't wait to see what's going to happen next!

Reading these books was just incredible, and I can't wait to finish out this series!
