Waiting on Wednesday #229, September 30th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Born of Betrayal by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Expected Publication: November 3rd, 2015
From Goodreads:
Years ago, family loyalty caused Fain Hauk to give up everything he loved: His military career. His planet. His fiancée. Even his name.

Now decades later, everything has changed. He’s built a new life out of the ashes of his old, and he’s vowed to never let anything threaten his loved ones again.

But when old enemies align themselves with new ones, he’s caught in the middle of a brutal war. And when fate throws his former fiancée back into his world and she has her own agenda that includes taking his head for what he did to her years ago, more than just his life is at stake. The fate of the Ichidian universe and that of his brothers-in-arms hangs in the balance. Winner take all.

It’s killed or be killed, and never has the battle been more fierce…

Or more fun.

All In by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Expected Publication: November 3rd, 2015
From Goodreads:
Three casinos. Three bodies. Three days.

After a string of brutal murders in Las Vegas, Cassie Hobbes and the Naturals are called in to investigate. But even with the team's unique profiling talents, these murders seem baffling: unlike many serial killers, this one uses different methods every time. All of the victims were killed in public, yet the killer does not show up on any tape. And each victim has a string of numbers tattooed on their wrist. Hidden in the numbers is a code—and the closer the Naturals come to unraveling the mystery, the more perilous the case becomes.

Meanwhile, Cassie is dealing with an equally dangerous and much more painful mystery. For the first time in years, there's been a break in her mother's case. As personal issues and tensions between the team mount, Cassie and the Naturals will be faced with impossible odds—and impossible choices.

Ten Thousand Skies Above by Claudia Gray
Expected Publication: November 3rd, 2015
From Goodreads:
In this sequel to A Thousand Pieces of You by New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, Marguerite races through various dimensions to save the boy she loves.

Ever since she used the Firebird, her parents' invention, to cross through to alternate dimensions, Marguerite has caught the attention of enemies who will do anything to force her into helping them dominate the multiverse—even hurt the people she loves. She resists until her boyfriend, Paul, is attacked, and his consciousness is scattered across multiple dimensions.

The hunt for each splinter of Paul's soul sends Marguerite racing through a war-torn San Francisco, the criminal underworld of New York City, and a glittering Paris where another Marguerite hides a shocking secret. Each dimension brings Marguerite one step closer to rescuing Paul. But with every trial she faces, she begins to question the one constant she's found between the worlds: their love for each other.

ENDLESS CARNAGE. ENDLESS QUESTIONS.

Mara is a 16-year-old soldier who's spent years fighting a war that's lasted generations. Wide-eyed children, some just turned thirteen, rarely survive their first fights, despite her best efforts to train and lead them. What she thinks she wants is to uncover the root causes of the war between the Protectors and the masked Gaishan, maybe find a way to end it. But what she really wants is a future—for herself and the others—beyond the battlefield.

Then she's injured in combat, and when an enemy fighter not only heals her wounds but reveals his face, she sees the promise of all she desires. This cunning teen Gaishan has answers to her questions, but first she must commit treason and travel beyond the boundaries of her world. She must brave a place where everything rests on the point of a blade: her loyalties, her friends, her heart.

Week 39 Review: Velvet Undercover

From Goodreads:
Perfect for fans of Jennifer Donnelly and Libba Bray comes this page-turning historical spy thriller from Teri Brown, author of the Born of Illusion series.

Samantha Donaldson's family has always done its duty for the British Crown. In the midst of World War I, seventeen-year-old Sam follows in their footsteps, serving her country from the homefront as a messenger for the intelligence organization MI5. After her father disappears on a diplomatic mission, she continues their studies of languages, mathematics, and complex puzzles, hoping to make him proud.

When Sam is asked to join the famed women's spy group La Dame Blanche, she's torn—while this could be an unbelievable adventure, how can she abandon her mother, who has already lost a husband? But when her handlers reveal shocking news, Sam realizes she can't refuse the exciting and dangerous opportunity.

Her acceptance leads her straight into the heart of enemy territory on a mission to extract the most valuable British spy embedded in Germany, known only as Velvet. Deep undercover in the court of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Sam must navigate the labyrinthine palace and its many glamorous—and secretive—residents to complete her assignment. To make matters worse she must fight a forbidden attraction to the enemy—a dangerously handsome German guard. In a place where personal politics are treacherously entangled in wartime policy, can Sam find Velvet before it's too late . . . for them both?

A thrilling story of one girl's journey into a deadly world of spy craft and betrayal—with unforgettable consequences.

My Review:
Oh, man, this book was so awesome! I enjoyed it so much, there was so many great bits in this book! I loved Sam's narration, it was awesome, and her skills made her very useful as a spy! So awesome to read!

I didn't know which war this one was at first. But shortly after I looked it up on web, well, the book told me, so yeah, that was awesome, to really know what was going on. Because the German royal family went bye-bye after WWI, and Sam was working as teacher for grandchildren. Yeah.

This book had parts. From her regular life, to her training, to her mission, we watched her evolve, go through these things. And while I confused some people up (her trainer and handler, with another lady) well, just made the mystery all the more better!

Who Velvet was, was pretty important! And it led to a lot of what happened in this book, because the weapon that Germany developed, yeah, it was not great, and if you know this history, then you can probably guess what the weapon is/was.

Yeah, really fantastic book, with a really fantastic ending, everything came together and it was just so freaking good!

Week 39 Review: The Perfect Witness

From Goodreads:
She was the perfect witness--until they found her.

When Teresa Casali was young, she discovered that she could read people's memories. But this strange gift became a curse when her mob boss father used Teresa to gain the upper hand in his world of corruption and violence. Exposed by her own family to the darkest impulses of mankind, Teresa finds herself defenseless and alone…until, from seemingly out of nowhere, she meets the mysterious Andre Mandak. Armed with a chilling set of skills, Mandak can protect Teresa and kill her pursuers. But can she trust him?

Now she's the perfect target--and there's nowhere left to hide…

With Mandak's help, Teresa learns to control her power before it consumes her. It is his promise to get her into Witness Protection that convinces Teresa to assume a new identity: she becomes Allie Girard and tries to forget Teresa Casali ever existed. For years "Allie" lives a normal life with a new family…until the day her cover is blown and the truth spreads like wildfire. Now she will have to use her finely-honed gift to end the threat that began with her family's betrayal. Nothing can stop her from revealing the truth…even if it kills her.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading this book so much! The book itself is different from the first synopsis that I read (which is way different from the one that's above) so I had a bad idea of what this book would have in my head, that was pretty quickly corrected!

Like for instance, I thought that the beginning, of her life transitioning from Teresa to Allie, would be short, and it wasn't. It did take up a portion of the book! I also thought that Teresa was an adult when this all happened, and she wasn't. She was 16, which is pretty young to have gone through what she did!

I do wish that I'd read the previously published books before this one. Because this book has Megan, who stars in Pandora's Daughter, and who was also in an Eve Duncan book. But oh, well, all read, and I'm going to be reading those soon, anyway, so yeah!

Really enjoyed Allie and Mandak together, they started off a bit rocky, but they developed a pretty strong relationship in this book, that helped them through the trials of this book, of the bad guys doing what they were doing, and her mom!

Awesome, fantastic book, I enjoyed it so much, and now I need to read the rest of Iris Johansen's books!

Week 39 Review: A Mad Zombie Party

From Goodreads:
The battle rages on.

Ali Bell and Cole Holland's crew of zombie slayers thought they'd won the war against Anima Industries, the evil company responsible for capturing and experimenting on zombies in an effort to discover the secret to immortality. In the last epic clash, the slayers lost many of their crew and closest friends. But Frosty, the ice man himself, has not recovered from one casualty in particular—the love of his life, Kat Parker.

On the path to self-annihilation, Frosty receives a message from beyond—Kat's spirit returns, insisting he partner with rogue slayer Camilla Marks. Frosty will do anything for Kat. Except that. Camilla is the one who betrayed them all, leading to Kat's death.

But when Anima rises from the grave to become a force the slayers may not have the strength to overcome, Frosty, Camilla and all the slayers will have to work together to survive. And one broken slayer will learn that sometimes, the line between hate and attraction is blurred…and the road to redemption isn't through revenge, but in letting go of the past and grabbing hold of the future.

My Review:
Oh, oh, oh, this book! So fantastic, I loved reading it so much! And I was so lucky to be able to get a copy early before this book came out! So that was just so fantastic, on top of this book existing in the first place! So yeah, happy!

It's been a year since I read the last book. So I had kind of forgotten some of the things that had happened. Like, Ali's birth mom, and what Milla did to betray them. But there was more to the story then met the eye, and things were going on that helped show that!

This world isn't done with us yet! So much happens in this book, from Ali and Kat making sure that Milla protects Frosty-whose real name we get, to the group powers that came about in the last book been blocked by the bad guys!

Kat's dead, and that sucks for everyone, but that doesn't mean that they're dead, too. So I was really glad of the relationship that developed between Milla and Frosty, they deserved each other, and it was awesome to watch their relationship grow from him hating her actions, and her hating herself, to them being in love with each other!

Apparently there's a bonus wedding scene in a special edition of this book. Which I really hope that it becomes something that those like myself who can't buy the special edition, can access. Because I really want to read it, and who's wedding it'll be!

The epilogue, with the notes written by the couples, and one by Kat, was just fantastic! Loved those little insights into their world (like Ali and Cole with two kids, and one that she starts labour with at the end of the note!) and having these characters have their happy endings! Just so great!

I just loved this book, so, so, so, soooooo much, it was so great! And hey, it just said in the ending that the adventures were done for now which could mean that we could have more, and that'd be so fantastic!

Week 39 Review: The Death Dealer

From Goodreads:
Genevieve O'Brien knows all about nightmares. She survived for two months as the prisoner of a deranged killer. Now a new menace is stalking the streets of New York.

The media are buzzing about the Poe Killings, a string of homicides mirroring the author's macabre stories. Almost without exception, the victims have been members of a literary society devoted to the master of crime fi ction--and Genevieve's own mother may be next.

Spooked by the bizarre slayings, Genevieve turns to P.I. Joe Connolly, her rescuer, her friend and...? She wants him to be much more, but he's been avoiding her since her ordeal, and she can't seem to get close to him.

Joe isn't sure there even is a case. But as the body count rises and their investigation leads them miles from Manhattan, he has to admit that there's a twisted new serial killer at work.

Even more unsettling is the guidance Joe is receiving from beyond the grave. People he knows to be dead--his cousin Matt and Matt's fiancee, Leslie--are appearing to him, offering new clues and leads, and warning him of terrible danger ahead.

But not even otherworldly intervention can keep Genevieve and Joe's new nightmare from becoming terrifyingly real--and putting them squarely in the crosshairs between this world and the next.

My first review of The Death Dealer
My Review:
Oh, fantastic to read this book again! Especially when reading this series in order, with all of the books, which didn't happen last time! So that was pretty great and awesome to be able to read with the previous book that these characters are in!

Excellent to read about these characters! And somehow, Adam seems to be in every book, whether just a mention, or something more, it seems! And having Genevieve and Joe having their story, that was just fantastic!

Really enjoyed this mystery, of maybe some of these events were connected, maybe not, and that sense of, what's going to happen next? So fantastic, lots of twists and turns, and just so incredible to read, and I enjoyed reading it so, so much!

With that ending, that was just a little bit creepy, that he would do that to Genevieve, even though she knew him, and was friends with him. But oh, that it was a killing pair, that was a really great twist to read, loved it! Though that she was worried about her position on the board just because she was interested in? That was pretty sucky!

Really fantastic book, and I just enjoyed it a whole ton!

Week 39 Review: No One to Trust

From Goodreads:
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Final Target, Iris Johansen raises the stakes and the heart rate with this relentless new thriller that follows the harrowing trail of a ruthless killer on the hunt—and the woman who is determined to hunt him down.

He is the most terrifying of killers: ruthless, cunning, charismatic. And he has the means to get whatever he wants. And what Rico Chavez wants most is Elena Kyler—and he wants her dead. Trained as an assassin, Elena didn't need anyone to survive. But now she finds herself on the run from one dangerous man and turning for help to another.

Sean Galen was a man without illusions. He knew it was only desperation that caused Elena to accept his help—a mother's desperation to save her young son from a psychopath father who would raise their son in his own chilling image. And yet he was determined to get this woman who had never been able to trust anyone or anything in her whole life to accept him as her ally. But both Galen and Elena know that Chavez's power and wealth mean there is no place they can be safe and no one they can trust—not even each other. Already Chavez's assassins and connections to those in the highest positions of power have turned this into a war with no rules.

With two shocking acts of brutal violence, Chavez shows he will stop at nothing and that nothing will stop him. Soon a trail of horrifying murders will follow Galen and Elena across country to a last stand and a shattering showdown. For Chavez is a master of control and he wants more than just to take Elena's life. He wants her alive long enough to see him destroy every reason she has for living. He wants her to turn against everything and everyone she ever believed in. He wants her to commit the ultimate act of betrayal. And by the time he is through, he wants her to beg him to take the only thing she’ll have left to give: her life.

My Review:
Oh, this book was utterly fantastic! I enjoyed it so much! So great, so amazing, and so wonderful! I enjoyed reading it so much, the pages just flew right on by, and was so great! Though I think that I've read it before, since things were kind of familiar!

Elena has had a hard life. Growing up the daughter of a rebel and a mercenary, her brother an addict that couldn't be helped, no matter how hard she tried, and having her group give her up to maybe be killed, and raped in the meantime, and ending up pregnant from the rapes? Hard life. But she was a really strong person, so incredible to read about!

Galen, oh, awesome character! He's been in this series since The Search, and yeah, some of the things that came out of his mouth! So funny, and different, and with some pretty specialized skill sets! Just really awesome to read!

With that ending, and what the one guy did, that was pretty horrible after what Galen had done for him. That really sucked. But it worked out in the end, because the bad guy was dead, and they could move on with their lives, though it took some losses to get there!

So fantastic to read this book, I just really loved reading it, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

Week 39 Review: Body of Lies

From Goodreads:
Eve Duncan, the signature character of #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen, thought her past was long buried. Until she finds herself tracking a killer so deceptive he leaves no trace behind—except for his victims.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan has been summoned to Baton Rouge by a high-ranking government official to identify the remains of an unknown murder victim. Eve wants nothing to do with the project. She has finally found peace from her own tragic past, living a quiet life with Atlanta detective Joe Quinn and her adopted daughter, Jane. Then a stunning series of seemingly unrelated events turns Eve's new world upside down.

Now, in a special government facility, she takes on the project of identifying the victim's skeleton. But she hasn't even begun when another death occurs. Someone totally ruthless, who can strike anywhere at any time and with seeming immunity, is determined to put a halt to her work, her life, and the lives of those she loves. Eve has stumbled onto a chilling conspiracy. There is only one person who can give her the devastating truth . . . and he's already dead.

My Review:
Oh, this book! It'd been a while since I first read it, at least 4 years, at least, probably more like 5-6. So while I didn't quite remember everything, there were some bits that I remembered, plus it helped that I read the end so I knew where things were going!

Joe made a pretty bad decision, in making Eve think that the little girl that they buried was Bonnie. He definitely pays for it in this book, because it's what the bad guy uses to get Eve to work on the skull away from him. But that doesn't last long!

Really fantastic mystery/thriller, things were happening, and that was just really great! All these twists and turns were happening, and I was completely caught in with all of them (though initially this book was a bit of a slow read, that's because I was reading everything else but this book!)

Really enjoyed that ending, with both bad guys known, and maybe taken care of! So that was really fantastic to read, and to be working for that next better life. Because hey, having that group that would shut down projects that would benefit humanity, just to keep their power, and doing what they did, being gone, yeah. That was great!

Yeah, fantastic book, and I can't wait to read more of this series! I need more, since the next book is coming out soon!

Week 39 Review: Make It Last

From Goodreads:
After graduating from Bowler University, the last place Cam Ruiz ever expected to find himself is his hometown. A bad job as a bouncer and worry over his mom's health make living in Paradise anything but. There's only one thing that can make his return any harder—running into the only girl he's ever loved.

Tate Ellison made a mistake when she was eighteen, one that cost her the best thing she’s ever had. She's always hoped the regret of losing Cam would fade over time. Too bad it's only grown. She took comfort in the fact she'd never have to face him again, so his presence in Paradise throws her for a loop.

The pull between them is instant and when the truth of what happened years ago tumbles out, they share a mind-blowing kiss...which leads to more. But the past has a way of repeating itself. When all the cards are on the table, Cam and Tate must decide what they are willing to do to make it last.

My Review:
This book was the shortest of the series, and it was the only one that didn't take place at Bowler Academy, though it did have the last of the house mates-Cam. None of these are negatives, they're just observations about the book. It made it different from the others!

Cam wasn't really in the first book. In the second, he was only in a few scenes. So having him full time was different and strange, and really enjoyable! I really enjoyed his story, and Tate's, because it was so freaking good!

Having the two of them, their stories, their lives, their problems, it was really interesting and fascinating to read! Yep, that was really fantastic. And knowing what had really happened in the past, and the reasons why, just made things all the more harder to read, because, oh, boy!

That ending was really fantastic, really sweet, and it was awesome to have everybody together in that last chapter before the epilogue, and with everything coming together, like, the perfect solution! So awesome, and yeah, just so enjoyable! Really great and awesome ending!

Yeah, really fantastic book, and I really enjoyed it, and I'm so glad that Max's brothers get books in the spin off series!

A Few Things...

First off, is that I have the flu. It sucks, because last night, I didn't get to sleep till about 5 am. And it means that I'm going to be missing at least a week of school, considering that my mom who is the one that suggested that I had the flu, also had it, and that was about 2 weeks. So there's that.

And second, on a good note, is that A Mad Zombie Party by Gena Showalter is already out in at least Chapters/Indigo location, so I picked up my copy, and I'm reading it, and I'm just loving it! It's so epic! So while it won't last me any significant time of my being sick, it's a bonus!

So yeah, those are my little bits of news! Hopefully it won't affect my blogging! Happy reading!

Using Random.org, I got 4898 which turned out to be Unleashed by Sophie Jordan! It's been on my TBR pile since April 30th 2014, and I added it because I love her books so much! Happy reading!

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

Why the time hasn't come yet...
It only came out early this year, but I haven't read it yet, but I really, really want to! I just really want to read thi sbook! What about you guys? Happy reading!
