No one looking at Morgan Kemper would think she had a secret-at least not one that she's deeply ashamed of. To everyone she meets, she comes across as sweet, pretty, and put together. But Morgan knows that looks can be deceiving. For over a year, she's shoplifted countless pieces of clothing and makeup. Each time she tells herself it will be the last, and each time it never is.
But when she's caught and sentenced to thirty hours of community service, the image Morgan has carefully constructed starts to crumble. She's determined to complete her punishment without her friends discovering the truth about her sticky fingers, but that's easier said than done...Especially once she meets Eli, the charming, handsome nephew of the owner of the charity shop where Morgan is volunteering. Soon, Morgan is faced with an impossible decision: continue to conceal the truth or admit that she's lied to everyone in her life, including the boy she's falling for.
Violence in the small, suburban town of Highbone, Long Island, is escalating, and best friends Joan and Daisy are finding themselves in the centre of it.
Joan has always been fascinated by the inner workings of living things: dogfish, eels, stingrays. But the more she sees of life outside her microscope, the more she realizes that people aren't as easy to read as cells on a slide, and no one, not even Daisy, tells the truth.
Daisy's always wished he had a family more like Joan's, and that desire has only grown since his dad went to jail. But not even Joan can help Daisy keep his deadbeat older brother from putting everyone close to them in more danger.
When tragedy strikes too close to home, Joan and Daisy need each other more than ever. But no matter how hard they try, their secrets and lies have driven them apart. It's only a matter of time before their friendship, just like their town, goes up in flames.
Everyone knows what happens in the end.
A mermaid, a prince, a true love's kiss.
But before that young siren's tale, there were three friends.
One feared, one royal, and one already dead.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.
A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn't so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.
But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can't stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince's heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.
The rise of Hans Christian Andersen's iconic villainess is a heart-wrenching story of friendship, betrayal, and a girl pushed beyond her limits—to become a monster.
Week 30 Review: 9 Bodies Rolling
From Goodreads:
Round and round we go...
Carlotta Wren is still reeling over her parents' return after a ten-year absence. After putting her life on hold for so long, she's not sure how to move forward. Her new reality isn't exactly what she thought it would be, especially considering the altered circumstances of the three men in her life.
Until we all fall down...
But her best gal pal Hannah is always there to cheer her up, and Hannah has taken up a quirky new sport--roller derby! The matches are a colorful spectacle of bodies maneuvering to score, but the fun stops cold when a dead body rolls onto the scene. Carlotta believes the accident is anything but--especially when skaters' bodies begin to pile up--in and out of the ring! Could Hannah be next?
My Review:
Man, I loved reading this book! This series has always been a lot of fun to read, so yeah, I was really excited to read this one, especially with how everything was kinda wrapped up in the previous book, I couldn't want to see where things would go from there!
There was a lot going on in this book, from their mom's medical appointments, to her relationship with Priscilla. Plus there was her dad acting strangely, which turned out to be a huge surprise! There was a lot jam packed into this book which was so great!
I'm kinda worried about Wes. With his father back, well, yeah, his dad has some particular ideas about things, and it's not good for Wes, because they're contrary to who he is, and that sends him down a dark direction. I hope he pulls through!
There was mostly a happy ending, the murderer was caught, though that wasn't a really big part of the book. Liz turned out not to be pregnant, but Carlotta knew that Jack wasn't right for her, but then Cooper left, so yeah, that wasn't good. But that ending opening the Christmas presents that they've waited so long to open as a family, yeah, that was an ending! And an evil cliffhanger one at that!
This book was so fantastic, and I enjoyed reading it so much! I need the next book!
Week 30 Reviews: Silent Blade, Silver Shark
From Goodreads:
Old hatreds die hard. Old love dies harder.
On Meli Galdes' home planet, the struggle for power is a bloody, full-contact sport--in business and on the battlefield. For years her lethal skills have been a valuable asset in advancing her family's interests. She's more than earned her right to retire, but her kinsmen have one last favor to ask.
Kill the man who ruined her life.
Celino Carvanna's razor-sharp business acumen--and skills with a blade--won him the freedom to do as he pleases. There's only one thing he can't seem to control--his reaction to the mysterious woman who tantalizes his senses. Her eyes alone set his blood simmering, stirring ridiculous adolescent fantasies about breasts and honey. With a few words she dissects his soul. Who is she? And how does she slide so easily under his well-guarded skin?
It's almost too easy to draw Celino within the kill zone. Meli plans to revel in him. Drink him in. Wring every drop of pleasure out of every moment.
And when she's sure he belongs to her, she will finally repay a decade's worth of pain--in a single, brutal dose of reality.
From Goodreads:
Claire Shannon is a killer. She uses no weapons, only her mind.
Born on a planet locked in a long war, Claire is a psycher, a woman with the ability to attack minds and infiltrate a biological computer network where psychers battle to the death. But when the war abruptly ends, Claire must hide her psycher's ability to survive. She is deported to a new planet, a vivid beautiful place, where she meets Venturo Escana, a powerful psycher, whose presence overwhelms both her mind and her body.
She thought she had left war and death behind, but now she must fight for her new life and this battle might just cost her everything...
My Review:
Wow, I really enjoyed reading these stories! I really enjoyed the world, we got a lot of little details, like the formalities and the structures to keep them from annihilating one another. I really hope that we get more, so we can explore more of this world!
Silent Blade, I loved their relationship, and how they were supposed to be married, but he wanted his freedom. If only he'd listened to her, but nope, just straight out rejected anything she had to say. Well, she showed him! Awesome story!
At first, I wasn't sure how these books were connected besides both having Kinsmen. But then the world that took Claire in is the same one where the couple from the first book are from. And then it turns out that they're friends with her new boss! So yeah, we got a quick check into their lives, which was really great!
The whole thing about the war just seemed so pointless. Just split the planet for goodness sakes! The relocation deal was a bit sketchy, why couldn't they go to other planets after to avoid going back to their lost one? That ending was hilarious, with the note from his aunt to his mom about the results from the battle that the last chapter ended with, and hopes to finagle them into marriage!
These books were just fantastic to read, and I really hope that we get more, even if it's unlikely!
Week 30 Review: Magic Binds
From Goodreads:
Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she's faced could have prepared her for this…
Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…
Kate's father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.
The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…
My second review of Magic Binds
My Review:
I had to read this book again, it's almost time for Magic Triumphs to come out, so I had to know where we'd left things! And I'm so glad that I did! I mean, this was a really great book, but having now read Iron and Magic, that mention of Elara Harper, yeah, just amps the special-ness up!
So much happens in this book. It's not really a mystery to solve, per say, they know who the bad guy is-Roland, and they know what he wants to do/what could happen. The problem is is finding a different future and carrying it out. Which was so great to read!
For some reason, I thought that Roland found out that she'd brought her aunt's consciousness in this book. But I didn't read any such scene. I don't know where the idea came from! But I can't wait to see it in Magic Triumphs, because I know it's going to happen, because it has to!
I can't wait to see where things are going to go from here! There was the mention of Elara as the White Warlock/abomination in whatever plan she, Erra and the witches were cooking up. But it seems that events might conspire that Kate and Roland might become unlikely allies, at least for a bit! Can't wait see what's going to happen!
This book was so freaking great, and I'm so excited and a little sad for Magic Triumphs, I want to know how it's all going to end!
Week 30 Reviews: On the Edge, George and Jack in School, Bayou Moon, Fate's Edge, Steel's Edge
From Goodreads:
Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either.
Rose thought if she practiced her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn't turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power).
But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them—or they'll devour the Edge and everyone in it.
From Goodreads:
Free online fiction from author's website.
Jack squinted at three boys blocking the hallway. His History class was on the second floor. He was on the third. He had walk past the three guys to get to the stairway leading down. The middle one, a tall dark-haired kid had that half-scared, half-pissed off look on his face that usually signaled a fight. Being well-behaved while fighting would prove to be very difficult.
From Goodreads:
The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…
Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan's long-time rivals are suspect number one.
But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise's life. William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation's spymaster.
When William's and Cerise's missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they'll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.
From Goodreads:
Audrey Callahan left behind her life in the Edge, and she's determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But when her brother gets into hot water, the former thief takes on one last heist and finds herself matching wits with a jack of all trades...
Kaldar Mar-a gambler, lawyer, thief, and spy-expects his latest assignment tracking down a stolen item to be a piece of cake, until Audrey shows up. But when the item falls into the hands of a lethal criminal, Kaldar realizes that in order to finish the job, he's going to need Audrey's help...
The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Wal-Mart and magic is a fairy tale—and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…
Charlotte de Ney is as noble as they come, a blueblood straight out of the Weird. But even though she possesses rare magical healing abilities, her life has brought her nothing but pain. After her marriage crumbles, she flees to the Edge to build a new home for herself. Until Richard Mar is brought to her for treatment, and Charlotte's life is turned upside down once again.
Richard is a swordsman without peer, future head of his large and rambunctious Edger clan—and he's on a clandestine quest to wipe out slavers trafficking humans in the Weird. So when his presence leads his very dangerous enemies to Charlotte, she vows to help Richard destroy them. The slavers' operation, however, goes deeper than Richard knows, and even working together, Charlotte and Richard may not survive...
My Review:
It was so great to read these books! I knew it was a popular series of Ilona Andrews, because they mention that people always ask for more. And now having read it, I totally understand! I would totally want more!
I loved the world so much! There's the Weird, with magic, the Broken with no magic, and then between them, the Edge as a little stripe of land! So interesting and I loved everything about it! I loved all the details, of how they could go between the two worlds if they had a certain level of magic, and if you had too much magic, you couldn't get to the Broken, and too little you couldn't get into the Weird. Yeah, that was really awesome to read!
I loved how these books were connected. Like, the 3 later books in the series, each one had a Mar as a significant other. The first one didn't, but the guy was a friend of the guy in the second book. And her brothers are in each book, though they're only in the end of Bayou Moon. Really enjoyed it!
So there were two main plots in these books. One, the underground war between the two countries. The other, slavery. I don't think the underground war bit was totally over which is another reason why I want more, but I loved how the slavery ring was taken down and dealt with! It was so great!
I loved reading these books, they were so great, and so enjoyable to read!
Week 30 Review: Zero Hour
From Goodreads:
As a teenager, Audrey Harte went to jail for murder. Now, she uses her own experiences to help catch dangerous killers. Richard le Duke is the most ruthless serial killer criminal psychologist Audrey Harte has ever encountered. When Richard's son -- and suspected accomplice -- is arrested, police hope they have leverage over Richard to get him to release his latest victim. Instead, they find themselves up against a mind almost as warped as his father's. Matthew le Duke will give up his father's location on one condition: Audrey tell him every gruesome detail of her own dark past. If he doesn't contact his father within the hour, a young woman will die, and her murderer will escape. All Audrey has to do is finally reveal what happened that night -- and how it felt to make her first kill.
My Review:
This was such a great short story! I enjoyed reading it so much, though I hope it doesn't mean that we won't get more of this series, because yeah, it's so fantastic! I really enjoyed this mystery, there were a lot of great twists and turns and in such a short story! Loved it!
The idea that this serial killer that has never been caught, who is kinda infamous, lived in and around their area, yeah, that's not a great thing to be a part of your community. That the reason why connected to her friend's family, yeah, that just added another layer of depth to the story!
Matthew was pretty awful! I mean, he knew that his dad did what he did, and he tried to manipulate the cops to get what he wanted instead of doing the right thing. He was just so awful and tricky. And his plan? Yeah, that was just tricky, but they beat him, yeah!
I loved how it all turned out! I mean, he tried to kill both his dad and his first love/first person he tried to kill. But it didn't work out that way, and yeah, I'm so glad that he was foiled! Made for such a great ending! Loved it!
I loved reading this book, and I really really hope that we get more!
As a teenager, Audrey Harte went to jail for murder. Now, she uses her own experiences to help catch dangerous killers. Richard le Duke is the most ruthless serial killer criminal psychologist Audrey Harte has ever encountered. When Richard's son -- and suspected accomplice -- is arrested, police hope they have leverage over Richard to get him to release his latest victim. Instead, they find themselves up against a mind almost as warped as his father's. Matthew le Duke will give up his father's location on one condition: Audrey tell him every gruesome detail of her own dark past. If he doesn't contact his father within the hour, a young woman will die, and her murderer will escape. All Audrey has to do is finally reveal what happened that night -- and how it felt to make her first kill.
Week 30 Reviews: Gerald Demille and Helen Meet, Clean Sweep, Sweep in Peace, One Fell Sweep
From Goodreads:
Gerard Demille and Helen meet.
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she's responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she's facing is unlike anything she's ever encountered before. It's smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
From Goodreads:
Dina DeMille doesn't run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn...and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper…
From Goodreads:
Gertrude Hunt, the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, is glad to have you. We cater to particular kind of guests, the ones most people don't know about. The older lady sipping her Mello Yello is called Caldenia, although she prefers Your Grace. She has a sizable bounty on her head, so if you hear kinetic or laser fire, try not to stand close to the target. Our chef is a Quillonian. The claws are a little unsettling, but he is a consummate professional and truly is the best chef in the Galaxy. If you see a dark shadow in the orchard late at night, don’t worry. Someone is patrolling the grounds. Do beware of our dog.
Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your host, Dina Demille, will defend you at all costs. We ask only that you mind other guests and conduct yourself in a polite manner.
My first review of Clean Sweep, Sweep in Peace, One Fell Sweep
My Review:
I loved reading this books again! I even read through Maud's novella as what's been written and uploaded thus far, because I just wanted to keep riding the wave of this series, because it was just so great to read!
It has been a while since I read these books, just over a year, and I read a lot, so it was really fantastic to catch up with these characters again! I'd remembered some things, like Sean was the one who was working for the Merchants of Baha-char in Sweep in Peace, so that was really great!
I'm glad that I've read at least some of the Edge books, because yeah, it had Jack and George as kids, as well as Sophie and the final member of their party. I just loved that, and that beginning of Sweep in Peace when George killed Spider, the Spider that fused Sophie's mom, yeah, that was so great! Just added that something special!
So there's a few things for the future books that I can't wait to see. There's the protectors of the Inns and Innkeepers being attacked. There's finding her parents, and with the clue of Sebastian Black, and the cat she adopted with a collar of S.B., so yeah, I can't wait to read about that and more!
Loved reading these book again because they were just so great, and I can't wait for more!
