Teaser Tuesday #481, June 30th

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today's teaser comes from Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige, page 19.

"But it had just been the wind. For the first time, it occurred to me that the impending tornado might not be a joke."

Well, that sounds a little bit terrifying! Must read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wrote that Review Update #307, June 28th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
If you want to participate, set a certain amount of reviews to write, and once you make that goal, you can get a reward!

My reviews to reward is writing all of the reviews of the week, and I motivated myself to write my review for Death & Desire and Shadows & Surrender, The Garden of Three Hundred Flowers and Spindle, Perdition, The One Memory of Flora Banks, The Beckoning Shadow, Elantris and The Hope of Elantris, An Abundance of Katherines, Artemis, Defy the Fates, so I have 9 of 9 reviews written!

And as always, I want to review this week's reviews!

What about you guys? Happy reading!

How Well I Stuck to It #310, June 28th

So I decided that I should have accountability on sticking to what should be in a week, so I'm doing How Well I Stuck to It every Sunday, because my schedule should be fixed in by now!

Update 27:
Nothing Planned!

Just a free week, to read whatever books I have left in my readathons!

Week 26:
An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, Artemis by Andy Weir, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo, Dark Song by Christine Feehan, Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger, Season of the Wolf by Maria Vale

vs.

Death & Desire by Deborah Wilde, Shadows & Surrender by Deborah Wilde, The Garden of Three Hundred Flowers by E.K. Johnston, Spindle by E.K. Johnston, Perdition by Ann Aguirre,
The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr, The Beckoning Shadow by Katharyn Blair, Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, The Hope of Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, Artemis by Andy Weir, Defy the Fates by Claudia Gray

Well, I only read 2 of what I planned, but I read 8 that I didn't plan. So that works out, and hopefully I'll read those other books shortly! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wheel of TBR #5, June 28th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. On the first week of the month, I'll do 12 spins, for books that I'll have all month to read. For each week for the rest of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 4 or more times in a month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 4 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it in that month, then at the end of the month, if I have more than 2 unread books, I'll unhaul at least one book.

Yeah, I read all 3 of last week's TBR! And of previous books, I did finish Death & Desire. So I have a bunch to carry over. I just overextended myself, but I'm going to read them in July.

Prompts Used This Week:
Blind, Number, Jax Pick, Reread, Goodreads Update Feed, Ugly Cover, Hype, New Author, Wild Card, A-Z Author, DAC Book, Sat on Shelves.

Blind-Yellow-We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal-I picked a few books, put them in a blanket, shook them up, closed my eyes, and reached out, and this is the one I picked.

Number-Cyan-3, 414-Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson-This is the book that came up, no choice in the matter.

Jax Pick-Rose-Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton-I picked 3 books, put treats on them, and this is the book that he picked.

Reread-2nd Yellow-Origin by Jessica Khoury-I read this book as an ARC, so I'm glad to reread it, because I haven't read the rest of the series!

Goodreads Update Feed-Violet-Twin Daggers by MarcyKate Connolly-This book was reviewed by someone I'm Goodreads Friends with, and I just got an ARC of it to read, so yeah to put it on the pile!

Ugly Cover-Spring Green-The Summer Set by Aimee Agresti-This cover isn't ugly to me, really, but it's a bit plain and not too, too interesting to look at.

Hype-Azure-Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi-Yeah, a lot of people raved about this book, but I just never got around to it. I just recently picked up a copy though! (And this is the book that almost was Dobby's pick, but he didn't find the treat, so I'm glad to add it to the pile!)

New Author-Orange-Red Sister by Mark Lawrence-I haven't read any of this author's books, and I can't wait to read this book!

Wild Card-2nd Cyan-The Antidote by Shelley Sackier-I read the synopsis of this book once. But that was when it was an ARC, so it's been a year plus, I don't remember what this book is about. Can't wait to dive in and learn about it!

A-Z Author-Magenta-R-Set Fire to the Gods by Sara Raasch and Kristen Simmons-Well, one of these author's last names starts with R!

DAC Book-2nd Magenta-Crownchasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer-This book is coming out shortly, and it's the first book by Rebecca Coffindaffer!

Sat on Shelves-Red-Changes in Latitudes by Jen Malone-I got this book as an ARC, and it came out in July 2017, so almost 3 years. So it's good that I'm going to be picking it up!

Yellow: 2

The Reward Challenge Update #458, June 28th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read Death & Desire which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, Shadows & Surrender which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and a WoW Book, The Garden of Three Hundred Flowers which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, Spindle which counts 4 times as a End of Series 2020 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and a WoW Book, Perdition which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, The One Memory of Flora Banks which counts twice as a SAC 2020 Book, The Beckoning Shadow which counts 4 times as a DAC Book, Edelweiss Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, Elantris which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, The Hope of Elantris which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, An Abundance of Katherines which counts twice as a SAC 2020 Book, Artemis which counts 3 times as a SAC 2020 Book and a Sophomore Challenge Book, Defy the Fates which counts 4 times as a End of Series 2020 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and a WoW Book.

So I have 32 counts which translates to $16 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

Week 26 Review: Defy the Fates

From Goodreads:
Hunted and desperate.

Abel only has one mission left that matters: save the life of Noemi Vidal. To do that, he not only has to escape the Genesis authorities, he also must face the one person in the galaxy who still has the means to destroy him. Burton Mansfield's consciousness lives on, desperate for a home, and Abel's own body is his last bargaining chip.

Alone in the universe.

Brought back from the brink of death, Noemi Vidal finds Abel has not only saved her life, but he's made her into something else, something more. Not quite mech, yet not quite human any longer, Noemi must find her place in a universe where she is utterly unique, all while trying to create a world where anyone--even a mech--can be free.

The final battle between Earth and the colony planets is here, and there's no lengths to which Earth won't go to preserve its domination over all humanity. But together, the universe's most advanced mech and its first human-mech hybrid might have the power to change the galaxy for good.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book. I've really enjoyed this series, and I couldn't wait to see how it ended! And the ending of World, yeah, I was just itching to see how that would all play out! And it was just so interesting to read!

I didn't know how much time would be spent in saving Noemi and making her a hybrid human mech. I guess with the synopsis, you can guess that it's not quite long, since it mentions her dealing with it all, and given she can't do that until it was done to her, well, that means that it wasn't too long at all.

After that, well, there's still the war to deal with, and yeah, I was a little bit anxious, because while they have a plan, I was pretty sure that they didn't have the details. I mean, Abel comments on it, that a offensive weapon that doesn't kill? In a war? Yeah, that's suspicious, even if they didn't think that.

That ending was really great, I had a blast reading it! There was so much going on, they utilized what they'd learned over the course of this series! And while that ending wasn't exactly what the characters would want for their happy ending, well, the future is bound to hold it, and I'm happy for them!

This was a really great read, I loved it, and I can't wait to read more by Claudia Gray!

Week 26 Review: Artemis

The bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller—a heist story set on the moon.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal.

Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book! I really enjoyed The Martian, and I was looking forward to this one. It is a pretty short read, but I had a bit of trouble getting into it at first, because knowing a character was making poor decisions is one of my buttons, but then the action picked up and I got over it, so that was good!

Jazz was a really interesting character. She was really smart, but she held a menial job. So she turned to smuggling on the side. She has great potential, but she doesn't want to use it, to really have it. But she does want to be rich. Which causes her to make some pretty poor decisions.

I really enjoyed the second half of this book, she had made the wrong decisions, and now she was making some right ones, and dealing with the fallout of the past ones. I enjoyed watching her learn to trust and rely on others, and deal with her issues.

Also, I really enjoyed the little interludes, of Jazz as a child emailing with a child on earth, and as they grew up, we got to see how Jazz got to this point, see her history, and why her situation is as it is when this book starts, as well as the state of her relationships.

Most of the things that we learned in this book were science based, what with being on the Moon and all. But there were also some economic lessons in this book, mainly in the end, when the mayor explains the future of Artemis. So that was interesting to read!

I really enjoyed this book, it was another sci fi adventure book and I had a great time reading it!

Week 26 Review: An Abundance of Katherines

From Goodreads:
When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton's type is girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. On a road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, and an overweight, Judge Judy–loving best friend riding shotgun—but no Katherines. Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading this book. Contemporaries aren't really my thing, because there's just not quite enough going on in them. Compare the length of this review to my previous review of Elantris. That one is an extreme, but it was really easy to write that review vs. this one, and that's mainly because there wasn't as much going on to enjoy to read, and to say about. They're linked in my mind. Yeah. Anyways.

Colin was a child prodigy but he hasn't quite made the leap to becoming a genius. His need to feel special, well, everyone wants that. But for him, he has that potential, but most child prodigies don't end up becoming geniuses. So he has that to deal with.

And then he comes up with the Theorem, of how long a relationship can last, and watching him interact with his friends, and with Lindsey's input to add more variables, it was pretty interesting to read, and his Eureka moment was pretty interesting, as well!

I really enjoyed how this story was told, we had the present, and then we had various points along his romantic history with the various Katherines. I really enjoyed the end, when Colin told Lindsey the story of all 19. Well, technically Katherine 1 the Great was also K-19, but still. That was a great culmination of the the coaching Lindsey was giving on how to tell a good story, and plus, I wanted to know that full story!

This was a enjoyable story, and I enjoyed going on this adventure with Colin and the gang!

Week 26 Reviews: Elantris, The Hope of Elantris

From Goodreads:
Elantris was the capital of Arelon: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities for the benefit of all. Yet each of these demigods was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.

Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping -- based on their correspondence -- to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

A rare epic fantasy that doesn't recycle the classics and that is a complete and satisfying story in one volume, Elantris is fleet and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about. It's also the wonderful debut of a welcome new star in the constellation of fantasy.

From Goodreads:
The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. At that point, Elantris had only been out in stores for about seven or eight months, but I actually hadn't written anything new on the story or world since 2000, when I'd finished the first draft of the original book. This story was originally posted for sale on Amazon.com; once the contract with them ran out, I posted it on my website.

There were always a few holes in the manuscript where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be read after you've finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax. In the annotation, I've written a further explanation of why I wrote this piece. Some of you may find it interesting to read this ahead of time; I put it in the annotation, however, as I know others would rather enjoy the story without bias beforehand, then read my thoughts afterward.

Either way, if you haven't read the novel Elantris, this contains major spoilers. Might I suggest reading the book first? This story won't work at all for you if you haven't.

As always, thanks for reading!

My Review:
Yes, wow, I really enjoyed reading these stories! This is the first book that Goodreads and Brandon Sandersons 2019 State of the Author says is in the Cosmere world. I honestly can't wait to dive in and learn how all of the worlds are connected, because of the synopsis and what I've heard of the Mistborn series, there's a different magic system, so I can't want to see how they're all connected!

Reading these were so freaking great, this world of Elantris, where people were once transformed basically into gods, with so much power, and then 10 years ago, it fell, well, I just couldn't put it down! And that we were going between 3 POV's, Raoden who is taken by the Shaod, Sarene who was going to marry Raoden to ally their countries, and Hrathen who wants to convert Arelon and Teol to his religion. I really enjoyed seeing all the sides, though it was hard reading Hrathen's perspective, because he was Sarene and Raoden's enemy.

I loved Sarene and Raoden, and their interactions. They balance each other very well, they're both really great politicians, but she's doesn't fit the mold of a high born woman, and he's easy to get along with. And given that she doesn't know who he is, since she thinks he's dead, but he knows who she is, well, yeah, there was a lot of friction there!

Also, her political sparring with Hrathen was interesting to watch, and I really enjoyed watching her best him, though not so much the other way around. And both did happen, because they were both really political people. They had conflicting religions (which stemmed from the same main source, but from two different students of the teacher) and yeah, I really enjoyed the clash!

Just wanted to add that I'm slowly reading the Annotations that Brandon Sanderson has on his website (here's the introductory one.) And in chapter 2, he says that Sarene is the least favourite main character. She's my most favourite, then Raoden, then Hrathen. Maybe because I could see myself in her, that she doesn't fit, but also because I admired her for what I don't have, the keen political mind, she's well learned and has a biting tongue when need be. I loved having her perspective!

While this was going on, the whole thing Raoden was dealing with was bringing hope to the people of Elantris, and figuring out what caused the fall, and how to fix it. It was just so fascinating, and yeah, I read this book in one day, barely, while also working an 8 hour shift (I started at 6, so there was time to read, because I finished just before midnight.) Yeah. That's how much I couldn't put down this book!

The Hope of Elantris, it was really great to read, telling us where Ashe was during the big battle. The fact that it's name fits with the different parts of the book Elantris, that was really great. And yeah, seeing the adventure that Ashe had, protecting the kids and the one who was protecting them, that was really great!

There's three questions I have, and I hope it's answered in a sequel, since there are going to be 2 more books in this series, though not for years off right now. And that's what went down with the fall. Like, what caused the Chasm? Because it caused a lot of damage outside of the gaping hole in the country. I'm wondering if it was caused by nefarious means...

And the 2nd is, the Seons. It was said that Elantris and the Aon's made them. But they didn't find out how in the end. And in chapter 12's annotation, Brandon Sanderson talks about how that's going to be a focus in book 2. I can't wait to explore that!

The 3rd is how this world of the Cosmere is linked, and I can't wait to find out! I really enjoyed reading these, they were both so excellent, and I can't wait to read more of this world!

Week 26 Review: The Beckoning Shadow

From Goodreads:
The Magicians meets Fight Club in this heart-stopping contemporary fantasy stand-alone about a teen girl with special powers who seeks redemption through a dangerous tournament that guarantees the winner a chance to undo the past. Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare and The Young Elites, and written by debut author Katharyn Blair.

Vesper Montgomery can summon your worst fear and turn it into a reality-but she's learned the hard way that it's an addictive and dangerous power. One wrong move and you could hurt someone you love.

But when she earns a spot in the Tournament of the Unraveling, where competitors battle it out for a chance to rewrite the past, Vesper finally has a shot to reverse the mistakes that have changed her forever. She turns to Sam Hardy, a former MMA fighter who's also carrying a tragedy he desperately wants to undo. However, helping heal Sam's heart will mean breaking her own, and the competition forces her to master her powers-powers she has been terrified of since they destroyed her life.

My Review:
This book was so fantastic to read! I really enjoyed this world of the Baselines and the Oddities, the history and the threats faced. And Vesper, who has a power that scares her, that she had an incident that hurt her family, and now she hides away from the world and herself. She was complicated, and I loved reading her story!

The whole Tournament, watching Vesper learn to fight, learn to use her abilities, was really great to read! I really enjoyed her interactions with Sam, but also Sapphira and Aldrick, and the team teaching her to fight. I really enjoyed watching her left them in, to not be so alone and afraid of herself!

Watching Vesper be so conflicted about betraying Sam, it was so entertaining to read! After all, they both had their reasons for wanting the unraveling-to take back what her powers did, to no longer be an oddity, and to bring his ex-girlfriend back to life. Well, things grew more complicated, as they investigated what actually happened, when she died. So that was really great!

Yeah that this is a series. After all, the Wardens are still alive and kicking, still posing a threat. And while Vesper is a good spot right now, well, she did go through a lot, and might have some future troubles besides the Wardens.

Really enjoyed this book, and I'm excited to read more!

Week 26 Review: The One Memory of Flora Banks

From Goodreads:
It's not a lie if you can't remember the truth.

Seventeen-year-old Flora Banks has no short-term memory. Her mind resets itself several times a day, and has since the age of ten, when the tumor that was removed from Flora's brain took with it her ability to make new memories. That is, until she kisses Drake, her best friend's boyfriend, the night before he leaves town. Miraculously, this one memory breaks through Flora's fractured mind, and sticks. Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life.

With little more than the words "be brave" inked into her skin, and written reminders of who she is and why her memory is so limited, Flora sets off on an impossible journey to Svalbard, Norway—the land of the midnight sun—determined to find Drake. But from the moment she arrives in the Arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must "be brave" if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. Flora is an unreliable narrator because of her memory. We see her do the same thing a few times, like getting the jam from her neighbor. And the thing about the lie in the synopsis, my question was, what was the lie about? Well, we found out!

This book is told in two parts. The first, she's home in England, and she's home along, conversing with a guy with whom she had a kiss-and that she remembered it. The second half is her traveling to Svalbard, trying to find him. It was really great to read!

Flora,  because, of her memory problems, is pretty resilient. She faces so many obstacles that everybody else doesn't face, and she gets through them. I really enjoyed her strength and her courage, because going to a foreign country by yourself takes a lot of bravery!

Throughout the book, Flora asks to go to a local amusement park. Like, constantly. And then it turns out there's a reason for it, and it's all a big mess of everything there. And when we learn the truth of what happened, well, things make sense, and I can't wait for Flora to move forward!

This was a really great book, it was a bit slow and confusing, but I enjoyed it!
