Teaser Tuesday #620, February 28th

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today's teaser comes from Storm by Amanda Sun, page 43.

"No wonder you're confused. That guy is a psycho."

Oh, that doesn't sound good! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Magical Readathon: Orilium:

Random:

OK, so I got 31 posts in 7 days, it was a quiet week, but we were dealing with really cold temperatures, I think we were under a warning for most of the week. Plus it snowed on Monday, the first day that I came back to work, so that was fun! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Dead Letter Days

Dead Letter Days sees Eric, Casey and the others living in a lodge in northern British Columbia, where a message in a bottle leads to a cold case that will have Eric finally grappling with his past and preparing to move into his future with Casey.

Wheel of TBR #144, February 26th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson, Skylark by Meagan Spooner, and A Show for Two by Tashie Bhuiyan.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this month, the picked Dying to Read. I read Misrule by Heather Walter, Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher, Good Girl Complex by Elle Kennedy, Bad Good Reputation by Elle Kennedy, The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter, I'm the Girl by Courtney Summers, The Unearthly by Laura Thalassa, Dead Letter Days by Kelley Armstrong, A Tempest at Sea by Sherry Thomas so I've read 24/9+.

For this coming month, the picked Ebook TBR.

Prompts Used This Week:
Restart the Series, Series Continued and Unfinished/Current 2021, Coin Toss.

Restart the Series-Red-Lark Ascending by Meagan Spooner-I restarted this series, and this is the final book in the series, why I had to restart it, so I'm counting it!

Series Continued and Unfinished/Current 2021-Azure-Daughters of the Dawn by Sasha Nanua and Sarena Nanu-Ria and Rani is on my Continued and Current in 2021 list!

Coin Toss-Blue-Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg-I got heads, and this is the book I wanted to read, so that works!

Colour Totals:
Red: 1
Orange: 0
Yellow:  0
Chartreuse: 0
Green: 0
Spring Green: 0
Cyan: 0
Azure: 1
Blue: 1

Wrote that Review Update #446, February 26th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
If you want to participate, set a certain amount of reviews to write, and once you make that goal, you can get a reward!

My reviews to reward is writing all of the reviews of the week, and I motivated myself to write my review for The True Love Experiment, Morrighan and The Kiss of Deception, Misrule, Not Your Ex's Hexes, Good Girl Complex and Bad Good Reputation, The Darkest Angel, The Darkest Facts, The Darkest Passion, I'm the Girl, The Unearthly, Skylark and Shadowlark, so I have 9 of 9 reviews written!

And as always, I want to review this week's reviews!

I wanted to have 2022's reviews done by today, but alas. Still have 29 left to go. Hopefully I can finish this week, but there was a reason I wanted to get them done before I went back to work.

What about you guys? Happy reading!

How Well I Stuck to It #449, February 26th

So I decided that I should have accountability on sticking to what should be in a week, so I'm doing How Well I Stuck to It every Sunday, because my schedule should be fixed in by now!

Week 9:
Dead Letter Days by Kelley Armstrong

Review Books: NA.

NetGalley: NA.

Edelweiss: NA.

New Books: 1. Check.

Just one book, but it's a novella, and I've already read it, so I'm good there!

Week 8:
A Tempest at Sea by Sherry Thomas

vs.

The True Love Experiment by Christina Lauren, Morrighan by Mary E. Pearson, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson, Misrule by Heather Walters, Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher, Good Girl Complex by Elle Kennedy, Bad Good Reputation by Elle Kennedy, The Darkest Angel by Gena Showalter, The Darkest Facts by Gena Showalter, The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter, I'm the Girl by Courtney Summers, The Unearthly by Laura Thalassa, Skylark by Meagan Spooner, Shadowlark by Meagan Spooner

I didn't read the book I wanted to, but I have since read it, and I did read a decent amount of books. So I'm mostly happy with that. Can't wait for next week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

The Reward Challenge Update #597, February 26th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read The True Love Experiment which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, SAC 2023 Book and a WoW Book, Morrighan which counts 3 times as a 2023 Dystopia Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, The Kiss of Deception which counts 3 times as a 2023 Dystopia Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Misrule which counts 3 times as a End of Series 2023 Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Not Your Ex's Hexes which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2022 Book and a WoW Book, Good Girl Complex which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Bad Good Reputation which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, The Darkest Angel which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book,  The Darkest Facts which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, The Darkest Passion which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, I'm the Girl which counts twice as a SAC 2023 Book, The Unearthly which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Skylark which counts 3 times as a 2023 Dystopia Book and Prequel and Sequel Challenge 2023 Book, Shadowlark which counts 3 times as a 2023 Dystopia Book and Prequel and Sequel Challenge 2023 Book.

So I have 33 counts which translates to $16.50 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

Week 8 Reviews: Skylark, Shadowlark

From Goodreads:
Sixteen-year-old Lark Ainsley has never seen the sky.

Her world ends at the edge of the vast domed barrier of energy enclosing all that's left of humanity. For two hundred years the city has sustained this barrier by harvesting its children's innate magical energy when they reach adolescence. When it’s Lark's turn to be harvested, she finds herself trapped in a nightmarish web of experiments and learns she is something out of legend itself: a Renewable, able to regenerate her own power after it's been stripped.

Forced to flee the only home she knows to avoid life as a human battery, Lark must fight her way through the terrible wilderness beyond the edge of the world. With the city's clockwork creations close on her heels and a strange wild boy stalking her in the countryside, she must move quickly if she is to have any hope of survival. She's heard the stories that somewhere to the west are others like her, hidden in secret—but can she stay alive long enough to find them?

From Goodreads:
Ever since she escaped the city within the Wall, Lark Ainsley's wanted one thing: to find her brother Basil. She's always believed he would be the one to put an end to the constant fear and flight. And now, hidden underground in the chaotically magical city of Lethe, Lark feels closer to him than ever.

But Lethe is a city cowering in fear of its founder, the mysterious Prometheus, and of his private police force. To get the truth about what happened to Basil, Lark has no choice but to face Prometheus.

Facing her fears has become second nature to Lark. Facing the truth is another matter.

Lark never asked to be anyone's savior. She certainly never wanted to be anyone's weapon. She might not have a choice.

My first review of Skylark, Shadowlark
My Review:
I loved reading these books again! I loved reading them the first time, but then I never got around to reading the 3rd and final book, so I had to reread them before I can read that. I had such a great time being back in this world with these characters!

I remembered basically nothing about these books, about these characters, this world, or the plot. It was like the first time reading a book, but sometimes I think I had an idea of what was going to happen. So that was a great reading experience!

Skylark introduced us to this world where her city takes magic from children to power the protective border. Which is pretty cruel. I'm glad that Lark escaped the fate of being a perpetual battery, because that would not be a great existence!

Shadowlark, man, it was a pretty dark read! I wanted to know more about what was going on in the city of Lethe, and what happened to Basil. The story had the pages turning, and that ending has me needing to know how it's all going to end!

Loved reading these books again, and I need to read Lark Ascending now!

Week 8 Review: The Unearthly

From Goodreads:
The first time I was declared dead, I lost my past. The second time, I lost my humanity. Now I'm being hunted, and if I die again, my soul is up for forfeit.

After enrolling in Peel Academy, an elite supernatural boarding school on the British Isles, the last of the sirens, Gabrielle Fiori, only wants to fit in. Instead, the elixir meant to awaken her supernatural abilities kills her.

When Gabrielle wakes up in the morgue twelve hours later, something wicked is awakened in her, something even the supernatural community has never seen before. Now the only person who can help her is Andre de Leon, the community's infamous bad boy and the king of vampires.

Yet even his help can't prevent the repeated attempts on Gabrielle's life. Someone is after her, and they will stop at nothing to end her short existence. Only Gabrielle cannot let that happen now that her soul hangs in the balance, because she may have met the devil. And he wants her. Bad.

The Unearthly is a YA novel that will appeal to fans of paranormal romance and those who love vampire novels.

My Review:
This was such a great read! This was published before the Bargainer series, I just wish that I'd read it first, but I'm getting to it before the next series set in this world gets published! But I need to get a move on, because there's 4 more books in this series to read before Bewitched comes out in April!

I'm pretty sure that at least part of Rhapsodic's flashbacks took place at Peel Academy. So it was really great to be there again. Getting to explore this part of this world, with Gabrielle's powers, that was so interesting to read!

Gabrielle is the last siren. That there's also her vampire heritage, and has to deal with soulmate stuff, yeah, she has a lot going on. Learning how to be a vampire, and how her powers work, while also dealing with Andre...yeah, that was a lot of fun to read! It was sometimes a little annoying, the way things happened, it was pretty easy to tell this was her first published book, so it was understandable, but it was still irksome when I noted something that didn't make sense.

Things were set up in this book, that I'm really excited to see where they go from here! A lot happened in this book, and I can't wait to explore more of this world! With all the threats that she faced, it's going to be interesting to see how the stakes are raised! Because man, the bad guy in this book, trying to avoid the prophecy, pretty much brought it on in his attempts to prevent it from happening, so I'm excited to see what the future brings!

I had such a great time reading this book, and I can't wait to continue on!

Week 8 Review: I'm the Girl

From Goodreads:
The new groundbreaking queer thriller from New York Times bestselling and Edgar-award Winning author Courtney Summers.

When sixteen-year-old Georgia Avis discovers the dead body of thirteen-year-old Ashley James, she teams up with Ashley's older sister, Nora, to find and bring the killer to justice before he strikes again. But their investigation throws Georgia into a world of unimaginable privilege and wealth, without conscience or consequence, and as Ashley's killer closes in, Georgia will discover when money, power and beauty rule, it might not be a matter of who is guilty—but who is guiltiest.

A spiritual successor to the 2018 breakout hit, Sadie, I'm the Girl is a masterfully written, bold, and unflinching account of how one young woman feels in her body as she struggles to navigate a deadly and predatory power structure while asking readers one question: if this is the way the world is, do you accept it?

My Review:
Oh man, this book! It was so gripping! I really need to read Sadie, because it deals with these same topics, given that the synopsis mentions that this is a spiritual successor. This story about this small town, dealing with this murder, was really great!

Georgia was an interesting character. She has this image of what she wanted to be, and she worked hard towards getting there. But she also put blinders on so she could stay naive, so she could focus on her goal, and she made some really frustrating decisions. But that was part of her journey.

The mystery into the death of Ashley, this pre-teen who was going down the wrong path...it was a heartbreaking read. As the story progressed, as we learned about the politics of this town and how the Aspera resort uses its power.

That ending though? That was so infuriating, that there's not going to be justice. But because Georgia doesn't have the power, the influence, to help make a change. I'm glad about what she decided to do, but oh, this is not a happy ending!

I had a really great time listening to this book, and I really do need to read Sadie!

From Goodreads:
Winged warrior Lysander has been alive for centuries, and yet he's never known desire — until he meets Bianka. Spawned from the bloodline of his enemy, the beautiful but deadly Harpy is determined to lead the untouched Lysander into temptation. He may try to evade her attempts, but even the most iron-willed demon assassin can resist for only so long…

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter has enthralled thousands of readers with her Lords of the Underworld series. Delve into this darkly sensual world with The Darkest Facts, a companion guide….

I, Cronus, King of the Titans, powerful warrior god, defender of the people, hereby command you to read and enjoy this Lords of the Underworld guide. I am not mentioned nearly enough, but that is neither here nor there. What you will find in this guide includes: notes from those vile fools, the Hunters; interviews with the Lords of the Underworld, as organized by that irreverent whelp William the Ever Randy; a candid discussion about the Lords of the Underworld among their women; answers to questions readers have been dying to know; and an intimate look at my very own sacred scrolls.

As I said, you will read and you will enjoy. That is your mission. Nay, your honor. Do not disappoint me. You will not like the results. Just ask Aeron, keeper of the demon of Wrath. Bad things tend to happen.

This Lords of the Underworld guide is also available in the anthology Into the Dark.

My first review of The Darkest Angel, The Darkest Facts, The Darkest Passion
My Review:
I loved reading these books again! I just love this series, and I had a fantastic time being in this world again, with these characters! Lysander and Bianka, Aeron and Olivia, well, it's great to have the angels as a focus back to back!

The Darkest Angel, I honestly wish that it was longer. Because we really don't get a lot about what it means to be an Elite Seven, and there's only 7 of them, so having such a short story about one of them, when we're not likely to get many more...I wish for more!

The Darkest Facts, fantastic again, I love this write up about these characters, and the interviews were a lot of fun to read! I remember when I bought the book that it's in, and I cherish that memory because I just adore this series so much!

The Darkest Passion, I forgot basically all of it, what role Scarlet played in it, who the voice was, and how they were going to keep the angels from killing Aeron. I did remember a bit about the bargain that Legion made, but not all of it. So it was fantastic to read this book again!

These were such great reads and I can't wait to continue on!

Week 8 Reviews: Good Girl Complex, Bad Girl Reputation

From Goodreads:
She does everything right. So what could go wrong?

Mackenzie "Mac" Cabot is a people pleaser. Her demanding parents. Her prep school friends. Her long-time boyfriend. It's exhausting, really, always following the rules. Unlike most twenty-year-olds, all she really wants to do is focus on growing her internet business, but first she must get a college degree at her parents’ insistence. That means moving to the beachside town of Avalon Bay, a community made up of locals and the wealthy students of Garnet College.

Mac’s had plenty of practice suppressing her wilder impulses, but when she meets local bad boy Cooper Hartley, that ability is suddenly tested. Cooper is rough around the edges. Raw. Candid. A threat to her ordered existence. Their friendship soon becomes the realest thing in her life.

Despite his disdain for the trust-fund kids he sees coming and going from his town, Cooper soon realizes Mac isn't just another rich clone and falls for her. Hard. But as Mac finally starts feeling accepted by Cooper and his friends, the secret he's been keeping from her threatens the only place she’s ever felt at home.

From Goodreads:
Bestselling author Elle Kennedy returns to Avalon Bay in this sexy second chance story about two exes who can't stay away from each other, Bad Girl Reputation.

When former bad girl Genevieve West returns home for her mother's funeral, she's prepared to keep her distance from her ex-boyfriend, Evan Hartley. Their history is rife with turbulence. And passion. A heck of a lot of passion...which she's trying desperately to forget.

But it's impossible not to run into Evan in the small coastal town where they once ran wild. And the moment she sees her gorgeous ex again, it's clear to Gen that Evan is still as unruly, sexy, and irresistible as ever. This time around, however, she's resolved to walk a new path. No more partying. No more foolish mistakes. Her plan is to temporarily remain in town to help her father run his business, but the second he finds somebody else, she's out of there.

Evan has other ideas. He knows they can be good together, but he just has to convince Genevieve of that, even if it means turning over a new leaf himself. But can a bad reputation ever truly be shed? Do second chances really work? Genevieve and Evan are about to find out.

My Review:
These books were so great! I've read her Off-Campus and Briar U series, but I'm pretty sure that those are self-pubbed, and these are traditionally published. Which in my mind, meant that the romance spice would be less. And they were a bit, but they were still pretty steamy!

I love seeing people tell of their parents, so that they can live their own lives. It's especially satisfying when the parents are rich and/or social pedigrees are important to them. That Mac has her own money from a company that she built, that her parents have written off as a joke, was so epic to read!

Good Girl Complex, what Cooper was doing, trying to seduce Mac so she'd break up with the asshole that caused him to lose his job? Yeah, not cool, and it's understandable that Mac reacted the way that she did when she found out. But they did fall in love, and they did work well together, and I had a great time reading their story!

Bad Girl Reputation, we learned a bit about Genevieve in the first book, that she was the rebel, the rule breaker, and she had this relationship with Evan, and then she left. And he was acting out in the previous book because of it. I really enjoyed seeing where they were at, now that she's changed, it was such a great read!

Loved reading these books, and I can't wait to read more!

Week 8 Review: Not Your Ex's Hexes

From Goodreads:
In April Asher's next Supernatural Singles novel, Not Your Ex's Hexes, a one-night-stand between a willful witch and a broody half-demon conjures an adventure that wouldn't be complete without several magical mishaps.

For her entire life, Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she's stepped down, it's time for this witch to focus on herself. And not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can't get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. But when Rose is sentenced to community service at Damian's animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their sparking attraction. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both.

After a sequence of dead-end jobs, it's not until Rose tangos with two snarly demons that she thinks she's finally found her path. However, this puts Damian back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. He doesn't approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there's one thing he's learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did.

Working—and sleeping—together awakens feelings Damian never knew he had...and shouldn't have. Because thanks to his ex's hex, if he falls in love, he'll not only lose his heart—but his humanity.

My Review:
I had a really great time reading this book! I really enjoyed the first time, it was a really enjoyable read, and I was looking forward to this one. This one was just as good, I loved being back in this world, and I really enjoyed these two and their romance! I mean, a hunter turned vet? What more could a girl ask for? Besides commitment?

We had talk about their first meeting, and then saw their second, in the first book, if I remember correctly. I was really looking forward to see how their story would unfold, now that her circumstances are changed, and she's free to choose a new path. Though she's having a hard time figuring out what she wants to do.

The fact that they had a one night stand, and then she ends up having to do community service at his vet clinic, meaning that they had to spend all this time together...yeah, it was a lot of fun to read, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship progress! The fact that her idea of camera feeds that people can watch to fundraise for the shelter was so great! I do wish we could've gotten a bit of a conclusion, of how successful it had become, not just the initial take off.

Learning more about Damian and his story was really great, because he's basically a new character, with the brief appearance that he had in the first book. I loved getting to know him and the events of his past that are having an effect on his present, and how they dealt with them! The fact that he had to do is grand gesture, I just loved that!

This was a really wonderful read, and I can't wait to read more by April Asher!

Week 8 Review: Misrule

From Goodreads:
Does true love break curses or begin them? The dark sorceress of "Sleeping Beauty" reclaims her story in this sequel to Malice.

The Dark Grace is dead.

Feared and despised for the sinister power in her veins, Alyce wreaks her revenge on the kingdom that made her an outcast. Once a realm of decadence and beauty, Briar is now wholly Alyce's wicked domain. And no one will escape the consequences of her wrath. Not even the one person who holds her heart.

Princess Aurora saw through Alyce's thorny facade, earning a love that promised the dawn of a new age. But it is a love that came with a heavy price: Aurora now sleeps under a curse that even Alyce's vast power cannot seem to break. And the dream of the world they would have built together is nothing but ash.

Alyce vows to do anything to wake the woman she loves, even if it means turning into the monster Briar believes her to be. But could Aurora love the villain Alyce has become?

Or is true love only for fairy tales?

My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I loved the first book,, and I don't know why I couldn't pick this one up sooner. But I'm glad I finally did, I loved the conclusion to Alyce and Aurora's story! It was amazing, and I couldn't put it down! I enjoyed the pair of them so much!

I honestly felt bad for the both of them. Alyce was afraid that the only person who ever loved her was going to wake up poisoned to her. Aurora woke up, and found everything completely changed, and she lost everything, including the Alyce that she loved. So the emotions there were fraught.

All that Alyce and her court built in the century that Aurora was asleep, it was pretty fantastic! To have a space for these races where they're abhorred by the human and fae population...everyone should have that, and I'm glad that they did so!

A bit theme in this book was about vengeance and forgiveness. That each side has bad blood, and retaliating against one causes the fued to continue and grow, and at what point do they stop, do they stop before everyone is gone? And that was really great!

This was a really fantastic read, and I can't wait to see what Heather Walter writes next!

Week 8 Reviews: Morrighan, The Kiss of Deception

Before borders were drawn, before treaties were signed, before wars were waged anew, before the great kingdoms of the Remnant were even born and the world of old was only a hazy slate of memory told in story and legend, a girl and her family fought to survive.

And that girl's name was Morrighan.

In this prequel novella to the Remnant Chronicles, a girl and a boy from enemy camps meet, fall in love--and set history in motion.

From Goodreads:
In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia's life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn't—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.

On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.

The Kiss of Deception is the first book in Mary E. Pearson's Remnant Chronicles.

My first review of Morrighan, The Kiss of Deception
My Review:
I loved reading these books again! It's been so long since I first read them, and after reading Dance of Thieves, I was just a little bit too confused, so I had to go back and read these! And I'm so glad that I did, because they were fantastic!

Morrighan was a really great story, getting to see that time after everything has gone wrong, and has been for at least 2 generations, where the 3rd, if they're still alive, were children when it happened. It's the start of what things are like by the time Lia's story comes around!

The Kiss of Deception, it was really great to meet Lia, Rafe, and Kaden at the beginning again. This first book is the lightest of the bunch, because Lia abandoned her life, she doesn't have any responsibilities. It was the time that showed her what the common people live like, and it's what gives her something to fight for.

Knowing how things are going to play out, I watched closer to her and Rafe's interactions. I mean, it's pretty hilarious, because she doesn't know he's the guy she ran away from marrying, and the fact that they do end up together, I love it!

Absolutely loved reading these books, and I can't wait to continue on again!
