Fire & Shadow: Review

From Goodreads:
Normal people sneak out to a party and have fun. Maya Rao ends the evening by incinerating the guy who attacks her.

Nik Lucas, sexy, new in town and totally forbidden, happens to walk in on her. Normal guys would run for the hills. Nik knows a whole lot more than he's telling.

Maya doesn't believe the gods are real, doesn't waste her time with mere mythology. But when gods, demons and hellhounds become the new normal and wielding fire becomes her new skill, she must decide what it is she really believes.

Can Maya accept that normal is something she will never be because it isn't normal to be ...

The Hand of Kali.

My Review:
I'll be honest and say that this book didn't capture my heart and imagination as much as the Valkyrie series. But that would be hard to do, seeing as it's one of my top series! This book, it was really enjoyable, and I did enjoy and like and love it a lot. It just didn't reach that really high, high peak that I have to have, given the sheer volume of books that I read (and almost all love!)

I enjoyed the Hindu mythology. It's not often that you read that, the only other time that I can remember is the Tiger saga by Colleen Houck, so yeah, that was a treat, it's nice and unique, and I just enjoyed reading about Maya starting on this journey, being The Hand of Kali!

And then there was the reincarnation, which is a bit more popular topic, but I loved how it was handled, and how it worked, and while it was a minor part in the book, I have a feeling that it might become more important, especially when the states get higher, and so do the risks!

Between all the characters, I was just surrounded by depth. Maya had her ticks, which was pretty evident from the first page, and then there's Nik, who is a story in and within of himself, and then Maya's 2 best friends, they were just awesome! I just enjoyed all the good guys in this book!

I enjoyed this book so much, and I can't wait to read more!

The Gatekeeper's Sons: Review

From Goodreads:
Fifteen-year-old Therese watches her parents die. While in a coma, she meets the twin sons of Hades—Hypnos, the god of sleep, and Thanatos, the god of death. She thinks she's manipulating a dream, not kissing the god of death and totally rocking his world.

Than makes a deal with Hades and goes as a mortal to the Upperworld to try and win Therese's heart, but not all the gods are happy. Some give her gifts. Others try to kill her.

The deal requires Therese to avenge the death of her parents. With the help of Than’s fierce and exotic sisters, the Furies, she finds herself in an arena face to face with the murderer, and only one will survive.

My Review:
I enjoyed this book. Therese sometimes didn't seem like a 15 year old girl, more like a 17, 18 year old, but then again, she did lose her parents, and then fall in love with the god of Death.

This was a really interesting book, especially since I just read the Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot, which mentions that Hades and Persephone had kids, well, here is a take on that, and I really enjoyed that, added to that the struggle of love, death, and revenge/justice.

One part I found really funny, was when before Therese knew that the Than from her dreams, and the Than with her were one and the same, and a god, when he was explaining his family, oh, dad couldn't get away and mom's with grandma? So funny! And it was the truth, though the bare, bare bones of the truth.

This is a series, so yeah, there's going to be more conflict! So with that ending, yeah, I just really want to read more of this series! It's was so entertaining and great, and I do want more! So yeah, that's a plus!

I enjoyed this book, and I hope you guys check it out, because it's free on most, if not all, retail stores right now!

Bio:
I write fiction for teens and adults and teach writing and literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where I live with my husband, three kids, two dogs, and two rats (Katniss and Prim, of course). I'm also an avid reader and book reviewer. I've always said I never want to give up reading for writing or vice versa. I want to do both. My favorite authors are Tracy Chevalier, Ann Patchett, Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, Rick Riordan, and Stephanie Meyer. I have too many to name, but those are a handful of them. When I'm not spending time with the family, working, reading, or writing, I can be found watching The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, The Middle, and NCIS.

I love to interact with readers and have recently added features to my website at http://www.evapohler.com with this in mind. If you email me your art and/or stories based on The Gatekeeper's Trilogy, or on Greek mythology in general, I will post them on my website for others to enjoy. I have also added a short video on the Olympians and a fun Jeopardy Game to test your knowledge. Please visit my website for more details.

As an air Elemental, 17-year-old Emily Morgan doesn’t have much power. That’s okay—she knows what happens to kids who do.

Like Michael Merrick. He’s an earth Elemental, one with enough power to level cities. Which makes him sexy. Dangerous. And completely off limits. At least according to Emily’s family.

Jaime, who knows a thing or two about showbiz, is on a television shoot in Los Angeles when weird things start to happen. As a woman whose special talent is raising the dead, her threshold for weirdness is pretty high: she’s used to not only seeing dead people but hearing them speak to her in very emphatic terms. But for the first time in her life – as invisible hands brush her skin, unintelligible fragments of words are whispered into her ears, and beings move just at the corner of her eye–she knows what humans mean when they talk about being haunted.

She is determined to get to the bottom of these manifestations, but as she sets out to solve the mystery she has no idea how scary her investigation will get, or to what depths ordinary humans will sink in their attempts to gain supernatural powers. As she digs into the dark underside of Los Angeles, she’ll need as much Otherworld help as she can get in order to survive, calling on her personal angel, Eve, and Hope, the well-meaning chaos demon. Week 30 Review: Scent of Magic

From Goodreads:
Hunted, Killed—Survived?

As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomanical King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.

Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon's opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon's most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.

War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible...again.

My First review of Scent of Magic
My Review:
I had forgotten how much I really, truly loved this book! And that's because it's all the little things, that make up the big things sometimes, that is a big part of what I love about books. And I forget those all the time. Which is just like, I want to go, bad memory!

Loved seeing Avry and Kerrick, with Avry, yeah, infiltrating the army, which was awesome because she taught them the various forest tricks that Kerrick taught her. And then Kerrick, up in his home realm, and then dealing with the problem there. Which was pretty awesome! Because they are going to be a pretty big force to be reckoned with!

Flea! That part was pretty emotional, and all the things that Avry learned about the dead soldiers, and then the prince's plan, that was pretty ingenious! Loved it! Though that made it harder for Avry, not being given much a choice, having it made for her!

Loved, and a bit hated the ending, because Tohon seems to have been taken out of commission, and a new bad guy is rising, but there was also a betrayal. And Avery and Kerrick could be together. But then he might be dying! Such a cliffhanger!

Loved this book so much, so enjoyable, and yeah, I can't wait for Taste of Darkness! It's going to be so good!

Week 30 Reviews: Abandon, Underworld, Awaken

From Goodreads:
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.

Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.

But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

From Goodreads:
Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn't dead.

Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it's for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they've come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there'll be no escape.

From Goodreads:
Death has her in his clutches. She doesn't want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she'd be forced to live forever in the one place she's always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn't fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce's home back on earth will be wiped away. But there's only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

My first review of AbandonUnderworld
My Review:
Oh, reading these books all together, with the newness of Awaken, was just the best! It's hard to describe, but these books just were seamless, and I was just immersed in this world for that time, and it was just so all-encompassing and wonderful!

Abandon and Underworld were just as good as the fist times I read them, and yeah, since I have read and reviewed them before, mostly what I want to talk about is Awaken! Which had a lot going on! Like John meeting her parents! And the whole "I'd marry her if she'd let me" thing!

I really enjoyed having Alex in Awaken, because he plays a role that just got larger and larger, and I just loved reading about that! And then the prison riot distraction! That was really awesome, what they came up with!

Awaken was the book where Pierce became the person she's been reaching for since the first book, strong and confident, and stepping up into the leadership role while John was incapacitated! And she used the diamond and the whip together to beat the furies! That was so awesome!

This was just a really an amazing series, I enjoyed them really so much, and now I can't wait for her next YA book and/or series!
