Week 13 Review: The Lost Symbol
From Goodreads:
Famed Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon answers an unexpected summons to appear at the U.S. Capitol Building. His planned lecture is interrupted when a disturbing object—artfully encoded with five symbols—is discovered in the building. Langdon recognizes in the find an ancient invitation into a lost world of esoteric, potentially dangerous wisdom. When his mentor Peter Solomon—a longstanding Mason and beloved philanthropist—is kidnapped, Langdon realizes that the only way to save Solomon is to accept the mystical invitation and plunge headlong into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and one inconceivable truth . . . all under the watchful eye of Dan Brown's most terrifying villain to date. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, D.C., The Lost Symbol is an intelligent, lightning-paced story with surprises at every turn--Brown's most exciting novel yet.
My Review:
Gah, it was a really great to reread this book! I enjoy this series so much (and I'd kinda love it if there was a movie based off it, too, but that's unlikely, seeing the time passed between them, and how well the previous movies did!) so yeah, just great to read it!
OK, this book was a lot like Angels & Demons. It took place in the span of a day, though it did cheat a bit, with some recollection scenes, of what happened, of how the characters were lead to where they are now. But yeah, it was really great to read!
I don't know if there was a subconscious memory of the last time that I read this book, that the twist made a lot of sense, or both, but I guessed that the bad guy was Peter's son. He did say that the person he was died in the prison, when he was going by the prisoner number!
The idea that the Mason's hidden ancient knowledge is the bible, and the bible telling us that we are all gods, combined with modern science research rediscovering what could lead to this, well, on one hand, sounds cool. On the other, sounds a bit egotistical. But as Rachel says, it'd be like putting an instrument, and saying you have the ability to play it well. You just have to practise!
Favourite lines: "Neckties had been required six days a week when Langdon attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and despite the headmaster's romantic claims that the origin of the cravat went back to the silk fascalia worn by Roman orators to warm their vocal cords, Langdon knew that, etymologically, cravat actually derived from a ruthless band of "Croat" mercenaries who donned knotted neckerchiefs before they stormed into battle. To this day, this ancient battle garb was donned by modern office warriors hoping to intimidate their enemies in daily boardroom battles." Oh, how fun! Glad that it's more a guy thing to wear! Though I've had to wear one for school band performances! "This guy eluded the French police...in loafers?" Yeah, it's pretty strange to think about, and unlikely, but it happened! "While at Langdon's home, the dog apparently had become homesick for his favourite leather chew toy and had located a worthy substitute in Langdon's study-an original vellum, hand-calligraphed, illuminated Bible from the 1600's. Somehow "bad dog" didn't quite seem adequate." Yeah, not much to say there! "It seemed Professor Langdon, the art connoisseur, was having an ethical dilemma about using the Internet when an original was so nearby." Well, yeah, it's kinda his livelihood, after all! "'What in the world is Darth Varder doing on Washington National Cathedral?' 'A contest for kids to design a grotesque that depicted the face of evil. Darth won.'" I can totally see that happening! Go Star Wars! "'Robert? I'd like a word.' 'Yes, I hear you lost one.'" Funny little bit of humor, what with everything going on!
Really enjoyed rereading this book, it was really fantastic, now I'll finally be able to read Inferno, like 3 years after it was published! And I've been meaning to read it since then!

Week 13 Review: The Orphan Queen
From Goodreads:
Wilhelmina has a hundred identities.
She is a princess. When the Indigo Kingdom conquered her homeland, Wilhelmina and other orphaned children of nobility were taken to Skyvale, the Indigo Kingdom's capital. Ten years later, they are the Ospreys, experts at stealth and theft. With them, Wilhelmina means to take back her throne.
She is a spy. Wil and her best friend, Melanie, infiltrate Skyvale Palace to study their foes. They assume the identities of nobles from a wraith-fallen kingdom, but enemies fill the palace, and Melanie's behavior grows suspicious. With Osprey missions becoming increasingly dangerous and their leader more unstable, Wil can't trust anyone.
She is a threat. Wraith is the toxic by-product of magic, and for a century using magic has been forbidden. Still the wraith pours across the continent, reshaping the land and animals into fresh horrors. Soon it will reach the Indigo Kingdom. Wilhelmina's magic might be the key to stopping the wraith, but if the vigilante Black Knife discovers Wil's magic, she will vanish like all the others.
Jodi Meadows introduces a vivid new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, dangerous magic, and one girl's battle to reclaim her place in the world.
My Review:
Oh, I enjoyed this book so much! I wish that the 4 novels of the Black Knife were coming earlier, so I could've read them before this, but oh, well! This was just so fantastic! And I'm glad that I read it after it was published-because the e-ARC from Edelweiss was only the first part!
So going into the world was really easy, I just slid in, and just started reading! Before this week, I'd been feeling a bit burned out, I guess, and yeah, this week just gave me a spark, because I've read more in this week then the past two combined, I believe!
Really enjoyed reading about Wil, and the various hats and identities that she uses, I was going to use the word "plays" but that gave the wrong impression. Because this isn't a game, it's serious! She's fighting to get her kingdom back!
I kinda guessed who the Black Knife was, there were clues, so yeah, I really enjoyed that! But that ending! Oh, that was a lot of different pains! But there's that fate that is up in the air! And the question over if magic is really the cause of the wraith, and what to do with what Wil did to some of the Wraith in this book!
Really fantastic, and with that cliffhanger ending, well, yeah, the 2nd book can't come fast enough!

Week 13 Reviews: Sleep No More, Sleep of Death
The blockbuster film Inception meets Lisa McMann's Wake trilogy in this dark paranormal thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike. This novel is also perfect for fans of Kelley Armstrong, Alyson Noel, and Kimberly Derting.
Charlotte Westing has a gift. She is an Oracle and has the ability to tell the future. But it doesn't do her much good. Instead of using their miraculous power, modern-day Oracles are told to fight their visions—to refrain from interfering. And Charlotte knows the price of breaking the rules. She sees it every day in her wheelchair-bound mother and the absence of her father. But when a premonition of a classmate's death is too strong for her to ignore, Charlotte is forced to make an impossible decision: continue following the rules or risk everything—even her sanity—to stop the serial killer who is stalking her town.
From Goodreads:
Oracles can see the future, but are sworn to never interfere. Charlotte Westing learned this lesson the hard way--but after a series of murders in her small town, she's beginning to wonder if she learned too well. Are there some futures Charlotte as a responsibility to change?
When a new girl with strange powers shows up at school on the same day Charlotte has a vision of a grisly double homicide, Charlotte must decide whether the time has come to free herself from the rules of the Sisters of Delphi once and for all. But what will be the price?
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading the both of these! They were just so great, and I loved the idea of Oracles, and then how the world got bigger and bigger, with the end of No More, and then of Death, with the other species that are in this world! So great!
So yeah, really, really enjoyed the idea of the Oracles, and being able to see the future, well, that's a hard thing to deal with! And with the rules that the Sisters have in place, well, it's a mixed bag, because they want to protect people, but they're also stifling them, and over-protecting them, as is the case for Charlotte!
Things go from OK, for Charlotte, to bad, to worse. It sucks, because the bad guy, I knew he was the bad guy! He said that he wouldn't go after her, but that's different from her question to if he was murdering the others! That wasn't answering her question, so I knew he was the bad guy!
Sophie was a really great character! So I'm really glad that we're getting more books, because of Sophie, and because the fact that Charlotte was going to tell her mom about the fact of her being an Oracle! I want to see how that goes!
I just really enjoyed these books so much (though I wish of Death was longer) and I can't wait to read more!

Week 13 Review: Salvage
From Goodreads:
Salvage is a thrilling, surprising, and thought-provoking debut novel that will appeal to fans of Across the Universe, by Beth Revis, and The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. This is literary science fiction with a feminist twist, and it explores themes of choice, agency, rebellion, and family.
Ava, a teenage girl living aboard the male-dominated, conservative deep space merchant ship Parastrata, faces betrayal, banishment, and death. Taking her fate into her own hands, she flees to the Gyre, a floating continent of garbage and scrap in the Pacific Ocean.
This is a sweeping and harrowing novel about a girl who can't read or write or even withstand the forces of gravity. What choices will she make? How will she build a future on an earth ravaged by climate change?
Named by the American Booksellers Association as a Spring 2014 Indies Introduce Pick.
My Review:
So I enjoyed this book a lot! It was just that the beginning, that world that she was in, was just so unfair, and she only understood the surface of that, that made the beginning hard to read. There was also the use of "so," but I got used to that!
The idea of multiple wives, after everything that's been happening after the past century, sucks. That Luck's dad was the one she was to marry, not Luck, is just horrible. But he was wrong when he said that mean thing. She's a human being, and she matters!
So I really enjoyed Ava's journey, of how she learned how different her world is from the rest of us, basically, from society's roles, and what she is truly capable of. Her grandfather's book, while horrible, did illustrate some differences!
I really with in that ending, that she had told Luck and the others that she was a captain. Because I thing that would've blown their minds more then her refusal to be his second wife! And she earned that!
Really great book, great touch on what she named the ship, and I can't wait for the companion book!

Week 13 Review: Counting to D
From Goodreads:
The kids at Sam's school never knew if they should make fun of her for being too smart or too dumb. That's what it means to be dyslexic, smart, and illiterate. Sam is sick of it. So when her mom gets a job in a faraway city, Sam decides not to tell anyone about her little illiteracy problem. Without her paradox of a reputation, she falls in with a new group of highly competitive friends who call themselves the Brain Trust. When she meets Nate, her charming valedictorian lab partner, she declares her new reality perfect. But in order to keep it that way, she has to keep her learning disability a secret. The books are stacked against her and so are the lies. Sam's got to get the grades, get the guy, and get it straight—without being able to read.
My Review:
This was a really fantastic! And like I noted in an earlier review, this seems to be the time where I'm reading about the various head conditions, since this is the 3rd one so far this week out of 4! And all of them are different, so that diversity was really great for me!
Honestly, for present day me, dyslexia would have been the worst thing to happen to me currently, if I'd had it. This is going to get a bit personal, but when I was having a hard time, books are where I went to. And if I didn't have that (since audio books weren't as popular back then) I don't know what I would've done. Sam, it's hard for her, but since she's had it for most of her life, she can deal, she's strong enough.
This book was really hilarious! Sam was really smart, and she knew things, and yeah, with the people that she hangs out with, from the Brain Trust that she eventually breaks, and Kaitlyn? and Eli, well, they have some pretty hilarious things to say!
What I got out of this book, was basically what Sam learned from the guy that really didn't like, things about difference. Difference doesn't have a negative connotation, it's neutral, it's just how we use it, that really determines it. So use it positively, because like that one ancient Greek philosophy dude is paraphrased, don't judge people, because well all have inner pain, and you don't know what their's is. Yeah.
Really excellent book, I enjoyed it a lot, and yeah, I'll be looking out for more Kate Scott books!

Week 13 Review: The Half Life of Molly Pierce
From Goodreads:
You take it for granted. Waking up. Going to school, talking to your friends. Watching a show on television or reading a book or going out to lunch.
You take for granted going to sleep at night, getting up the next day, and remembering everything that happened to you before you closed your eyes.
You live and you remember.
Me, I live and I forget.
But now—now I am remembering.
For all of her seventeen years, Molly feels like she's missed bits and pieces of her life. Now, she's figuring out why. Now, she's remembering her own secrets. And in doing so, Molly uncovers the separate life she seems to have led…and the love that she can't let go.
The Half Life of Molly Pierce is a suspenseful, evocative psychological mystery about uncovering the secrets of our pasts, facing the unknowns of our futures, and accepting our whole selves.
My Review:
This was a really fantastic book to read! I enjoyed it so much, it was really great and entertaining, and I loved the way that the story played out! It wasn't an action book, but a book on the mind! And yeah, I guess this week I'm reading a lot of books with various different head conditions.
This was a short book, but what was going on, it fit the length of the book, and yeah, I really enjoyed that! I enjoyed getting the memories that are the reason that Molly has this half life. Because yeah, I read the ending pretty early on, so I'd know what was going on!
That Molly can't be told what's up with her, because they've tried, and it didn't work, but that all of her immediate family knows about it, not fun for her! And after what happened to Lyle (which just felt off, for some reason, but it hurt Molly and Sayer. It just felt a bit out of place for some reason!) well, that was pretty much the starting point for the memories to start coming!
I could feel for Molly, she was in a pretty tight spot, and having faked along with the memory loss, though her family knew about what was happening, and then going back further and further, things started to make more and more sense!
This was a really great book, it ended in a really great place, sad in bits, but really good!

Week 13 Review: Red Queen
From Goodreads:
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own—an ability she didn't know she had. Except . . . her blood is Red.
To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard—the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince—and Mare against her own heart.
From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart and the only certainty is betrayal.
My Review:
This was a really fantastic book! The beginning, for me, was slightly hard to get into, because this world was just not nice to Reds, but then things happen, and the pages were just turning! So enjoyable, and entertaining!
If I were the one to write what books could be compared to this one, I'd say The Hunger Games, and The Jewel. There were elements in both of those that were similar to elements in this book, from Mare breaking the rules of an oppressive society to help her family, and the powers and the structure!
Between the princes, and their actions, being betrothed to the younger, while the older is the one who helped her, and who she's falling in love, and vice versa, well, knowing that this is a series, and a dystopian one, well, knew that wasn't going to end well! But the way that it did? Not good at all!
That there were others like her, and that the bad guy knows about them, after all that he's done, well, yeah, that sucks. But the good guys also have that list-and her brother, yeah!-so I think that's going to be a big part of the next book!
I enjoyed this book so much, and with that ending, I just know I need to read the sequel!

Week 13 Review: Made You Up
From Goodreads:
Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to be—sometimes, there really is someone out to get you. Made You Up tells the story of Alex, a high school senior unable to tell the difference between real life and delusion. This is a compelling and provoking literary debut that will appeal to fans of Wes Anderson, Silver Linings Playbook, and Liar.
Alex fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8-Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She's pretty optimistic about her chances until classes begin, and she runs into Miles. Didn't she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She's not prepared for normal.
Funny, provoking, and ultimately moving, this debut novel featuring the quintessential unreliable narrator will have readers turning the pages and trying to figure out what is real and what is made up.
My Review:
Yeah, I really loved this book! I started reading it, and then Alex's voice just sucked me in! I've never read a book starring a character with schizophrenia, so I didn't know what to expect, but yeah, Alex's voice was just excellent to read!
I really enjoyed her and Miles. Her schizophrenia was noticed in a "freeing the lobsters" that didn't happen like she thought, and her friend Blue Eyes, she wasn't sure if he was real. And Miles has those same blue eyes. But he's a total jerk! I loved how he would do something, and she would retaliate!
There's the story of how people slowly learned about her schizophrenia, a few people at at time, and then the big reveal courtesy of the local mean girl. There was a mystery going on there with her, the principal, and the girl's mom, but all in all, it ended pretty OK!
I think the scariest bit was the python scene. Snakes are my fear, like spiders are other people. So yeah, that wasn't fun at all! But the saddest bit, was her sister. That the whole thing happened, that was just really sad!
This was a really fantastic book, it was just really great and entertaining, and I can't wait to see what Francesca Zappla writes next!

"The secret is how to die. Since the beginning of time, the secret had always been how to die. The thirty-four-year-old initiate gazed down at the human skull cradled in his palms. The skull was hollow, like a bowl, filled with bloodred wine." -The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Which is kinda a creepy beginning, talking about dying! What about you guys? Happy reading!

The Wicked City: Review
From Goodreads:
Whatever June Coffin says, goes—literally. And it's not just because she's a chain smoking rebel. As a Siren, June has the ability to force people to obey any command she voices. But in a world where those with supernatural powers quickly become lab rats for science, she'd rather look out for herself than fight on the front lines…until her similarly gifted twin brother, Jason, is captured by Chicago's Institute of Supernatural Research.
To save Jason, June has no choice but to enter a hidden world of conspiracy, murder—and strange bedfellows—including a widowed paranormal advocate whose memory June accidentally erased, and a fiery paranormal separatist leader. Soon the lines between attraction and strategic alliance become blurred. But in a city exploding with paranormal crossfire, and her brother's life at stake, June will have to face her inner demons and finally take a stand.
My Review:
Oh, this was so good! Loved this world, and these characters, it was just fantastic to read about! For some reason I thought that I had already reviewed this book! Especially since it's a tour one! But oh, well, guess I'll write this review now!
The whole idea of the world being like this, is a negative mixed bag. That we're not liking Supernaturals, well, that's known from human history. And that we'd act that way, seems the obvious response (obvious in that it's not the right one, but what we go to) yeah. Not great!
Her ability, yeah, that was really fantastic! I enjoyed everything that was going on there, because this world isn't kind to people like her who have these abilities. So yeah, fairs fair that she uses it like she does! So fun to read!
I loved how there were all these different elements, that supported different parts of the story, that were sometimes disparate, but sometimes together, that led to that ending! This is the first of the series, and yeah, I enjoyed it so much!
I can't wait to read more of this series, it's been so good, and yeah, I can't wait for more!

Bio:
Though I was born in Reno, Nevada, and spent some of my childhood there, I’ve lived most of my life in Ohio: the past seven years in Cleveland, specifically, the home of rock and roll. I love Cleveland, though I’d like to live in Chicago or New Orleans someday (or hey, maybe both, a girl can dream!).
I’ve been writing for most of my literate life, and began pursuing a professional writing career at the tender and naive age of thirteen. I’ve (hopefully) improved a lot since my overwrought high school writing days, but my passion and focus has always been the same: I want to write stories. I love writing romance because I think it’s something everyone can relate to–everyone loves love, and a little bit of sex doesn’t hurt, either. I’m a big fan of paranormal elements, so most of my stories have some kind of spooky twist. If you like passion, sex, and chills down your spine, I’m the author for you!
I work as a bartender in an airport lounge currently, because writing doesn’t pay the bills yet. It’s an awesome experience that brings me into contact with interesting people. My days are never boring. I’ve been a bartender and server for a long time, so I can tell you a thing or two about working in the service industry.
I’m much older than I look but not as wise as I seem. I live with my cat and my adult son, and I’m blessed with a huge circle of friends and family. My real name is not Megan Morgan, I chose that name because it sounds ‘romance authorly’ and is far less weird and more glamorous than my real name.
