Week 22 Reviews: BZRK: Origins, BZRK, BZRK Reloaded, BZRK Apocalypse

From Goodreads:
'I am not a brave man'

Back. Way back. Back before BZRK, before the fight for freedom and the fear of madness. Back when Plath was just Sadie McLure. Sadie, who loved her dad.

Sadie's father started a war. In his own words, he tells us why.

Charles and Benjamin Armstrong, conjoined twins and owners of the Armstrong Fancy Gifts Corporation, have a goal: to turn the world into their vision of utopia. No wars, no conflict, no hunger. And no free will. Opposing them is a guerrilla group of teens, code name BZRK, who are fighting to protect the right to be messed up, to be human.

This is no ordinary war, though. Weapons are deployed on the nano-level. The battleground is the human brain.  And there are no stalemates here: It's victory . . . or madness.

From best-selling author Michael Grant comes the highly anticipated, terrifying, and mind-bending second book in the BZRK trilogy. The entire BZRK cell—including Noah and Sadie—has been left in pieces after the last round of battle with the Armstrong Twins, conjoined brothers who plot to rob mankind of its free will. Vincent's mind is shattered, and his memories hold dangerous secrets—secrets that Lear, BZRK's mysterious leader, will stop at nothing to protect.

Meanwhile, Bug Man has taken control of the President's brain, but playing with sanity is a dangerous game. The consequences can spiral way out of control, and the Armstrong Twins are not people Bug Man can afford to disappoint. The nano is as terrifying, exhilarating, and unpredictable as ever. But the wall of secrets that surrounds it is cracking. What will it reveal? And once the dust has settled, who will be sane enough to find out?
The Matrix meets Inner Space in this third book in the BZRK trilogy from New York Times best-selling author Michael Grant.

The staggering conclusion to the BZRK trilogy, from the author of GONE. The members of BZRK are preparing for their final stand. Noah and Sadie have seen death, and it holds no fear for them. Madness does, though. And losing each other.

But they will not sit back, the only witnesses to an invisible apocalypse. The world is being destroyed from the inside out. It's time for them to fight to the last, in the streets and in the nano. This is a story with both thrills and heart, packed with the author's trademark jaw-dropping set pieces and pace.

Join them.

Week 22 Review: Rules for 50/50 Chances

From Goodreads:
A heartrending but ultimately uplifting debut novel about learning to accept life's uncertainties; a perfect fit for the current trend in contemporary realistic novels that confront issues about life, death, and love.

Seventeen-year-old Rose Levenson has a decision to make: Does she want to know how she's going to die? Because when Rose turns eighteen, she can take the test that tells her if she carries the genetic mutation for Huntington's disease, the degenerative condition that is slowly killing her mother.

With a fifty-fifty shot at inheriting her family's genetic curse, Rose is skeptical about pursuing anything that presumes she'll live to be a healthy adult-including her dream career in ballet and the possibility of falling in love. But when she meets a boy from a similarly flawed genetic pool and gets an audition for a dance scholarship across the country, Rose begins to question her carefully laid rules.

Week 22 Review: My Demon Romance, My Funny Demon Valentine, My Demon Hunter, Mistified, Demon With Benefits

From Goodreads:
A romance writer and a demon from Hell. What could go wrong?

Eligos is bored. He's a powerful Duke of Hell tasked with manipulating deceitful humans to claim their souls for the underworld, blah, blah, blah, but all he cares about is escaping the eternal monotony that is his life.

It's not until he meets the lively, passionate Natalie, who writes love stories about misunderstood monsters, that he finds himself intrigued by something for the first time in centuries.

Though it jeopardizes his carefully-laid escape plans and puts him in the sights of Hell's dangerous Hunter, there's no way Eligos can resist her.

But he's supposed to be the villain in this tale… and villains don't get happy endings, right?

From instant New York Times bestselling author Aurora Ascher, comes the firstnovel in a funny steamy, paranormal romance series about learning how to love—and what love is in the first place—complete with HEA, clothes-ripping-hot love scenes, a crew of devilish demon brothers who are supposed to be the bad guys—Love can be Hell.

Asmodeus, Prince of Hell, just wants to make music. Jazz, specifically. Unfortunately, he's a demon. And he's supposed to be evil.

Clearly, for Ash, a career as a musician isn't exactly an option. Plus, he's cursed.Sick of playing by the rules, Ash and his three brothers escape Hell in search of freedom on Earth. But it's harder than they thought to keep their enemies off their tail . . .

The four rogues quickly become the Underworld's Most Wanted, and if they're caught, the consequences will be dire. Yet everything changes for Ash when he meets a beautiful violinist who can see through his curse. It must be too good to be true, but, no matter the risk, he has to have her.

Evangeline Gregory is just your average human. She works at a jazz bar, plays gigs on weekends . . . and, apparently, hallucinates demons.

At least that's what Eva tells herself when, moments after she meets the man of her dreams, she sees him shift into a 7-foot-tall monster. Not believing her own eyes, Eva decides to investigate and soon finds herself caught in the middle of a supernatural clusterf**k of epic proportions. But Ash isn't the only one keeping secrets, and the search for answers reveals a shocking truth that will change the course of her life forever. Or maybe just doom it. Eva and Ash will learn the path to love can be complete Hell.

For fans of Jenna Levine and K.F. Breene, the steamy, laugh-out-loud paranormal romance about learning how to love—including the darkest parts of ourselves—complete with HEA, clothes-ripping-hot love scenes, and a crew of devilish demon brothers who are supposed to be the bad guys . . .

From the instant New York Times bestselling author of SANCTUARY OF THE SHADOW!

The hunter shall become the hunted . . . And the timid shall become the fierce.

Enslaved to an evil demon queen for millennia, Mishetsumephtai has only ever served one purpose. He is the Hunter, the one who drags the guilty back to Hell.  But finally tasting freedom on Earth has changed him, and for the first time, Mist questions his duty. The human femalewho smiles at him with no idea what a monster he is, draws him in, and he'll do anything to possess her.

Lily Donovan thought the most dangerous thing about running to the corner store at night would be the aisles of junk food. She didn't bargain on encountering chaos in the form of a man with unusual tattoos and beguiling amber eyes, stalking her through the ice cream section. Since the death of her parents, Lily has tried to forget what she is. But denial is not an option when she's confronted with everything she's been running from.

Neither Mist nor Lily can ignore the burning magnetism between them. But Mist's reprieve from Hell was always temporary, and the punishment for disobedience will be worse than death. Yet he can't relinquish the woman whose scent calls to him like nothing he's hunted before.

From Goodreads:
Mist and Lily pay a visit to Eligos and Natalie. Can the Hunter make a new friend or will he just solidify an old enemy?

From Goodreads:
A hot-headed witch and a lovable bad-boy demon add up to a scorching enemies-to-lovers tale, in the latest spicy paranormal romance from instant New York Times bestselling author Aurora Ascher.

They can run from their demons . . .

The jokester of the demon brothers, Meph wears his grin like armor and uses humor as a mask. But lately, his composure has been slipping, especially around her. Iris. The blue-haired witch with a vicious temperament. Something about her soothes the darkness within him . . . but he's not looking for a savior. There's no such thing for someone like him.

But they can't hide forever . . .

Bitter and haunted by her traumatic past, Iris Donovan isn't keen on welcoming demons into her life—even if they're her sister's friends. Especially not teasing, tattooed, Meph, with his red eyes and devilish smile. After a toxic relationship, she's sworn off commitment, and she's not looking for another Mr. Damaged. Yet she can't stop craving what she shouldn't want.

To conquer this monster . . . they must tame it together.

With the return of a deadly enemy, the pain they've been suppressing is exposed, and Meph and Iris can no longer deny their feelings. Before Meph is swallowed by his darkness, Iris must overcome her fears and embrace that terrible part of him . . .

Or lose him forever.

Week 22 Review: Heir of Light

From Goodreads:
There is always a price to be paid for power and justice.

With the Academia now awakened from its centuries-long slumber, Robin, a student who hails from a prestigious family, must own up to his destiny. As heir to the Gardianno seat, a highly coveted position within the human caste court, Robin stands to inherit great power when he assumes his birthright—but at what cost?

Under the guidance of a formidable Barrani lord named Teela, Robin wrestles with his newfound duties and the societal complexities that come with the privilege. Soon, however, it's apparent that others feel entitled to the seat…and they're willing to do the unthinkable in order to get it.

With Teela and his best friend, Raven, at his side, Robin is ready to battle for what is rightfully his. But when the Halls of Law consider reopening the investigation into the baffling murder of his parents, the truth could lead Robin right to the heart of danger.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! I love this world and Michelle Sagara's writing so much, and this sequel in the Academia with Robin and Raven was really great! Now that he's aware of the position his line holds-and they're aware that he's alive, well, that's a whole complicated can of worms. It was such an enjoyable story!

The politics of his position, and of his age, and the fact that his uncle's family is holding the seat, that the older generation of said family are the ones that killed Robin's family...yeah, it's complicated. That a guardian had to be appointed for Robin, and said family were jockeying to be the one that was appointed was pretty stressful. The training, of manners, of swordcraft-and the particular sword that Teela gives him? So interesting!

Not to mention, that the time that Robin gained them at the end of the previous book was running out, that it was too long for the thoughts being without someone watching over them. So that was a ticking pressure that was growing, and I had to see what was going to happen next, how they were going to resolve it, but I loved watching and finding out!

I'm not sure if there's going to be more books in this spin off series. At this point, there are 2 books in the Wolves of Elantra series, though that series were individual, self-contained series, whereas this one has been very linked, and the story seems to be wrapped up, though there could be something that I missed and we could be more. Either way, I'll read it!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait for whatever is next from the series!

Week 22 Review: The Enchanted Greenhouse

From Goodreads:
Return to the cosy and heart-warming world of The Spellshop in The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst, a world brimming with singing flowers, honey cakes and honeyed love.

Terlu Perna broke the law because she was lonely. She cast a spell and created a magically sentient spider plant. As punishment, she was turned into a wooden statue and tucked away into an alcove in the Great Library of Alyssium.

When Terlu wakes up, she finds herself on a nearly-deserted island full of hundreds of magical greenhouses. The only other human on the island is a grumpy – but surprisingly sweet – gardener. He offers Terlu a place to sleep, clean clothes and freshly baked honey cakes – at least until she's ready to sail home.

But Terlu can't return and doesn't want to. And when she learns that the magic that sustains the greenhouses is failing – causing the death of everything within them – Terlu knows she must stay and help. Even if that means breaking the law again. Assisted by the gardener, a sentient rose and a winged cat, Terlu must uncover the spell that will save the island – and possibly also find a fresh chance at love and happiness along the way.

Funny, kind and forgiving, The Enchanted Greenhouse by New York Times bestselling author Sarah Beth Durst is a story about giving second chances – to others and to yourself.

My Review:
This was such a delightful read! I really enjoyed the first book, and I'm glad that we got a sequel! The internet is torn on whether or not this is a series, but it's in the same world, and some places have it as a series so I'm counting it. Given that Terlu was the one that created Caz, I'm glad that we got their story!

We almost immediately get into this story, first with Terlu being sentenced for the magic she used to bring Caz to sentience, and a bit of the time she spent as a statue-and then we're into the time where she's woken up on this strange island with a bunch of greenhouses.

I loved getting to know the ways of this island, with all the different plants, and the threat that they're under. To learn more about the magic of this world, and some of this history, at least the history of this island, why the greenhouses were built, was just so comforting.

Watching as events progressed, as she was faced with the prospect of being brought back to the capital, being turned back into a statue, while she has the knowledge to help, but it would mean using more magic...yeah, I felt bad for the dilemma she faced, but I had to keep reading and find out what was going to happen next!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Sarah Beth Durst!

Week 22 Review: The Looking Glass

From Goodreads:
GIRLS IN TROUBLE.

That's what Sylvie Blake's older sister Julia renamed their favorite fairy tale book, way back when they were just girls themselves. Now, Julia has disappeared—and no one knows if she's in trouble.

Sylvie is trying to carry on Julia's impressive legacy at the prestigious National Ballet Theatre Academy, but Julia, ever the star of the show, can't stay hidden forever. And when she sends Sylvie a copy of their old storybook with a mysterious list inside, Sylvie begins to see signs of her sister everywhere she goes. She may be losing her grip on reality, but Sylvie has to find out if the strange, almost magical things she's been seeing have anything to do with Julia's whereabouts.

With the help of her best friend's enigmatic brother and his beat-up car, Sylvie sets out to the beat of a Fleetwood Mac playlist, determined to return to New York with her sister in tow. But what Sylvie doesn’t expect to learn is that trouble comes in lots of forms—and that the damsel in distress is often the only one who can save herself.
