Week 47 Review: Roomies

From Goodreads:
It's time to meet your new roomie.

When East Coast native Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment, she shoots off an e-mail to coordinate the basics: television, microwave, mini-fridge. That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl's summer -- and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room.

As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they've never met.

National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr and acclaimed author Tara Altebrando join forces for a novel about growing up, leaving home, and getting that one fateful e-mail that assigns your college roommate.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. We did go back and forth between Elizabeth (EB) and Lauren, on different sides of the country, about to become college roommates. And it was just a fun read, there were some emotional, difficult moments, but it was a great read!

These are different characters, they've lived different lives. Elizabeth's parents split up when she was 5, because her dad is gay, a dad that currently lives in San Francisco. She's an only child, and there's drama because her mom is dating someone who is married. Oh, and Elizabeth ends up dating his son. So that's fun.

And then there's Lauren, who was an only child for a while-and then her parents had a bunch of kids in a row, she's sharing her room with her single digits aged sisters. So she wanted a single, but she's going to be rooming with Elizabeth. And initially, their emails to each other were a bit awkward, but I loved their developing relationship.

I loved how they bounced their current situations against the other. From Elizabeth's dating drama, to Lauren's developing relationship. I did enjoy that both girls focused on their currently, in person relationships, as well, which helped when there was major drama about Elizabeth's dad. But I enjoyed how it all worked out.

This was a really fun, enjoyable read, and I'm glad that I read it!

OK, so I got 56 posts in 7 days, I had a few readathons going on, though some are now over, and I read a lot, so yeah, lots of posts about that. And it was a pretty great week, and I can't wait for next week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Blink of an Eye, The Bone Maker, Capturing the Earl, White Night, It's My Birthday, Too, Heorot, Mike, Small Favor, The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry, and Wicked All Night.
A #1 New York Times bestselling author and an Edgar Award winner, Iris and Roy Johansen, team up to deliver a gripping new novel featuring investigator Kendra Michaels -- whose observational skills are worthy of a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.

Delilah Winter is one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, so how in the world was she kidnapped right in the middle of a show at the famous Hollywood Bowl? If anyone can figure it out, it's Dr. Kendra Michaels, who works with local and federal authorities on only the most impossible cases. Blind for the first twenty years of her life until a revolutionary surgical procedure allowed her to regain her sight, Kendra uses her powers of observation -- honed during her years in the dark -- to detect what other investigators don't. She agrees to lead the race to rescue the young singer before time runs out.

Joined by Jessie Mercado, the singer's former bodyguard and a military hero, Kendra closes in on the hideout location but not before casualties mount up. Desperate for leads, Kendra must set aside her personal feelings when agent-for-hire Adam Lynch also volunteers his special skills to aid in the search.

But as the abductor's true purpose becomes clear, the trio uncover a plot they never could have imagined -- leading to a showdown they won't soon forget.
From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, a standalone epic fantasy set in a brand-new world of towering mountains and sparkling cities, in which a band of aging warriors have a second chance to defeat dark magic and avenge a haunting loss.

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived.

Since then, Kreya, the group's leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.

She'd rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.

But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don't rest in peace after all.

Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn't stop just because someone once said, "the end."
The friendship of four young ladies has created an indestructible bond to protect one another from the perils of love and marriage...

After the demise of her friend's disastrous marriage, Mercedes Parsons isn't about to let the widowed Wallflower of West Lane, Lady Aurora Radcliff, undertake another perilous trip to the altar. At least, not before the bridegroom-to-be is thoroughly investigated. If only Mercy could stop her uncharacteristic daydreaming about Wesley Renshaw's charm, his intellect, his dashing good looks. After all, the earl has already set his sights on her best friend! She must keep her wits about her and avoid giving into temptation.

Wesley is both irritated and intrigued by the machinations of Mercy—He cannot let her cleverness and beauty distract him. He needs to marry her friend, Aurora, so he can reclaim his family's ancestral home. A wrong he has hoped to right his entire life. Besides, who is penniless spinster Mercedes Parsons to decide whom he can and cannot marry? Yet while he admires her unwavering loyalty to her friends, he decides it's high time the misguided woman had a dose of her own medicine. Two can play at this spying game. But they are both embarked on a dangerous charade. And it won’t be merely Mercy's reputation at risk—or her heart on the line—as Wesley comes to the inescapable conclusion that he has found the right woman at exactly the wrong time.
A sensational addition to the Dresden Files adventures-from a USA Today bestselling author. Professional wizard Harry Dresden is investigating a series of deaths in Chicago. Someone is killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry's half-brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too...increasingly significant threat to Western power.
Harry and Molly's mission to deliver Thomas' birthday gift goes awry.
Harry teams up with Miss Gard to find a missing bride.

A visit to the mechanic.  Set between White Night and Small Favor–shortly after the graphic novel Wild Card.
Harry Dresden's life finally seems to be calming down-until a shadow from the past returns. Mab, monarch of the Sidhe Winter Court, calls in an old favor from Harry-one small favor that will trap him between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and that will strain his skills-and loyalties-to their very limits.
A charming historical fantasy with a tender love story at its core, from the author of Unnatural Magic.

Hard-drinking petty thief Dellaria Wells is down on her luck in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees a want ad for a female bodyguard, and she fast-talks her way into the high-paying job. Along with a team of other women, she's meant to protect a rich young lady from mysterious assassins.

At first Delly thinks the danger is exaggerated, but a series of attacks shows there's much to fear. Then she begins to fall for Winn, one of the other bodyguards, and the women team up against a mysterious, magical foe who seems to have allies everywhere.
Set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress World, ancient deities are poised to wreck havoc, unless vampires Veritas and Ian can stop them … in this thrilling Night Rebel novel!

A gift from the gods…

Veritas and Ian have finally defeated their worst enemy, but the power it took to pierce through to the netherworld has unexpected consequences. Soon, Veritas is forced to rely on the last person she trusts---a golden deity named Phanes, who seeks far more than a temporary alliance with the beautiful vampire.

Can unleash hell…

But an escape from the netherworld soon pits Veritas and Ian against supernatural beings seeking to rule over mortals once again. Now, they must rally friends and foes alike—if the vampire council doesn't execute Veritas first. Plus, a wedge between Veritas and Ian threatens to destroy their love. Can they stand together against the unearthly powers about to be unleashed? Or does their love—and humanity—not stand a chance?

Tara Altebrando Author Page

The Story: I saw Roomies on NetGalley and it looked really good, so I requested and got it. Still haven't read it, and only realized it was by Tara Altebrando as well when I was making this post. But then I saw Take Me With You around on Goodreads, and it sounded fantastic. I've now read it, I loved it, and I can't wait to read more by her!

Week 44 Review: Take Me With You

From Goodreads:
Eden, Eli, Marwan, and Ilanka barely know each other beyond having a class or two together. But when they are all summoned via messaging app to an empty classroom after school, they find a small cube sitting on a desk. Its sides light up with rules for them:

'Do not tell anyone about the device. Never leave the device unattended.'

And then, 'Take me with you... or else.'

At first they think it's some kind of prank or a social experiment orchestrated by the school administration. Still, they follow its instructions until the newly-formed group starts to splinter. Nobody has time for these games - their lives are complicated enough. But the device seems increasingly invested in the private details of their lives. And disobeying its rules has scary - even life-threatening--consequences...

My Review:
This book was such a wild ride! The synopsis was really intriguing, I wanted to find out what the device's purpose was, what it could do-and what the characters would do as a result. Plus there's the unknown threat that it hangs over their heads, it added a flavour of thriller to this book which was really great!

We did rotate on who was narrating this book, so we got to see all 4 of these guys as they navigated life with this device. I loved their various journeys, there's fear and there is racism, and it was just so great to read!

There were a number of tricky tricky situations in this book. The device was creepy, and I loved how this story was told, because we got manipulated, and things weren't exactly how they seemed, and that was just so great to read!

Honestly, I feel like this could use a sequel. There's a few unanswered questions as to who was behind this. We did get a lot answered in that ending, which was a bit brutal, by the way, but I would really like to have just a little bit more answered, but it's not 100% needed. I'm just a little weird like that!

This was such a great read, I really enjoyed it, and I'd be thrilled to read more by Tara Altebrando!

Teaser Tuesday #498, October 27th

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today's teaser comes from Take Me With You by Tara Altebrando, page 14.

"Words had been exchanged. Chests had been puffed out. At their kindergarten moving-up ceremony."

Well that sucks and is not a great thing to happen at a kindergarten event! Must read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!
