Write on Review-a-Thon Update 14 and Wrap Up

I reviewed Sleep With the Lights On. So yeah, I wrote 14 reviews, which is pretty good, if I'd written 10 yesterday, then I would've made my goal, but oh, well, too much for one person to do! But I did get 14, and that means all of my 2014 reviews are again all up and written, so yeah, I'm happy! What about you guys?

Week 36: The Perilous Sea, Push, Played.

ARC August Update 19 and Wrap Up

So I read Wake to Darkness. And while I'm 1 off from my goal, I did pretty well, read a fair number of ARC's, though I definitely wish I'd read more, seeing as the over 100 books that I want to read from week to week, more then half are ARC's. Yeah, I'm insane. But I did read 19 ARCs this month!

Week 35 Reviews: Water Bound, Spirit Bound

From Goodreads:
Christine Feehan's #1 New York Times bestselling Hidden Currents may have closed the Drake Sisters saga—which "brought paranormal romance to a new high"*--but it has opened the door to an all~new series of startling magic, mystery, and the soul~stirring elements of nature….

The last thing Lev Prakenskii remembered was being lost in the swirling currents of the ocean and getting sucked deeper into the nothingness of a freezing black eddy off the coastal town of Sea Haven. Just as quickly, just a miraculously, he was saved—pulled ashore by a beautiful stranger. But Lev has no memory of who he is—or why he seems to possess the violent instincts of a trained killer. All he knows is that he fears for his life, and for the life of his unexpected savior.

Her name is Rikki, a sea~urchin diver in Sea Haven. She has always felt an affinity for the ocean, and for the seductive pull of the tides. And now she feels drawn in the same way to the enigmatic man she rescued. But soon they will be bound by something even stronger, and their tantalizing secrets will engulf them both in a whirlpool of dizzying passion and inescapable danger.

From Goodreads:
Lethally sexy undercover agent Stefan Prakenskii knows a thousand ways to kill a man-and twice as many ways to pleasure a woman. So he's looking forward to his new mission: arrive in the coastal town of Sea Haven and insinuate himself in the life of Judith Henderson, an ethereal beauty with ties to the crime lord he's determined to trap...

My first review of Spirit Bound
My Review:
Dear publishers of Christine Feehan's books: Please make the font size just a tad bigger, in the future, because the current size of print makes it harder to read, and increases the chance that I'm going to take a break, because I'm worn out by reading the small font.

I loved the romance in these books! I mean, it's a staple in Christine Feehan books, along with mysteries, and yeah, both Rikki and Lev, and Judith and Stefan, work well together, and they work though their issues with each other, not all right away, but at a good, steady pace! Though between Lev's honesty, and Stefan's issues with it, it's a wonder, sometimes, that they ddid!

Rikki, and Lev, both have problems. She's haunted by all the deaths by fire that surround her, and he just doesn't remember who he is. We do, since I think most people read Hidden Currents before this book, that he's Ilya's brother, and he was the bodyguard to that evil guy, and yeah, that was just awesome to go through that! And her last name is Sitmore, which I didn't know, though it was mentioned twice that I noticed!

I think my most favourite scene in Spirit Bound, was the weddings. They were small, secret, and sparely attended, but they were sweet, and all 4 of them got married, each to their respective person, and yeah, that was just so perfect! And it's funny, because Rikki likes Joley's music, but was afraid of talking to her, and now they're sisters-in-law, I'm pretty sure!

And still, I don't really get when Levi is released from the trap-at the top of page 335 in my copy, the jaws of the trap are slowly opening, then Judith's big use of spirit-did that open it all the way?-then at the bottom of 336, top of 337, he's free. So yeah, that's a bit of a mystery to me!

Oh, Blythe! The acknowledged leader, daughter of the Drake, that from the Sea Haven series's Drakes, mom's generation, would have Abby's powers, the truth. And who has some powers of her own. And things she caused her mom's death. Oh, and I think she might already be married to a Prakenskii, from the ending of Spirit Bound, "'I've been here before. And I'm certain that's the same priest who preformed the ceremony.' ...pressing her thumb deep into her palm." Which is something that all the ladies and gents connected to the Prakenskii romances have!

Favourite lines from Water Bound: "Brace yourself. I think they're planning to show up en masse. And when they get going, they're relentless. Last time they came, they insisted I eat broccoli. It was really annoying." I just love this, it's so funny, that they have to convince an adult to eat vegetables! "I'm sort of distracting? Obviously I need to try harder." Yeah, I guess you do! "The sixty pound cod landed almost on top of Lev, furious, fighting, flopping and jumping, snapping with his teeth. Lev whipped out a gun and aimed it at the ferocious fish." Uh, overkill much! And then "Lev, the ruthless assassin, was about to abandon the boat because of a fish." Just too funny!

Favourite lines from Spirit Bound: "'I spend far too much time sitting on my butt. I think it's growing significantly.' 'You are so right. Middle-aged spread is setting in.' 'The thing about long legs, you shout little shrimp, is that I can outrun you.' 'Not with a large ass, you can't.'" Love their teasing! "Don't forget her Pilates. And her weight training, And her Zumba classes." That's a lot of things to not forget! "Didn't you get carded going into an R-rated movie last week?" That must kinda suck! "'I feel like the teacher's duncey student.' 'Honey, you are the teachers dunce student. Fortunately we all love you, so it doesn't matter if you can kick butt or not.'" So sweet! "Thomas. He detested Thomas. His biggest rival." That's funny, seeing as Thomas is a persona that you adopt, and is the current you! "That's our Lexi. She doesn't have enough plants or enough forest to play in, she has to bring the jungle to Sea Haven." Which is just awesome! "I refuse to allow a bee to keep me from proving to you that I can keep from driving the thing into a tree." Yeah, that'd be a good thing! "You're right, why on earth would I give you credit for having a brain?" I can just see the sarcasm dripping off the page! "Probably. Yeah. No question about it. I fell hard." Loved how he tried to protect his dignity, and then just abandoned it! "'Who the hell is this Jonas character to you?' 'He is the local sheriff.' 'I told you I was making a kaleidoscope for his wife. Ordinarily when someone stars firing guns, a civilized person calls the sheriff.'" Yeah, big overreaction, Stefan! "'Judith is a terrible shot.' 'I am not. The stupid gun is always jumping at the last second.' 'I told you to practice.' 'You don't need to talk to her like that.'" Love their banter, Judith, Levi, and Thomas! "The birds living on this property are particularly vicious." That they are, when they're the security that Levi uses! "She had to know he was alive and well before she decided to boil him in oil." That's a bit extreme! "Airiana. Stop playing with the ammunition." Especially since it's just be fired, and you're using your element to move the bullets around!

I absolutely loved these books, and I can't wait to read Air Bound!

Week 35 Review: MacRieve

From Goodreads:
In this pulse-pounding Immortals After Dark tale, #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole delves into the darkest mysteries and deepest passions of Clan MacRieve. . .

A Beast In Torment

Uilleam MacRieve believed he'd laid to rest the ghosts of his boyhood. But when a brutal torture revives those ancient agonies and destroys his Lykae instinct, the proud Scot craves the oblivion of death. Until he finds her—a young human so full of spirit and courage that she pulls him back from the brink.

A Beauty In Chains

Seized for the auction block, Chloe Todd is forced to enter a terrifying new world of monsters and lore as a bound slave. When offered up to creatures of the dark, she fears she won't last the night. Until she's claimed by him—a tormented immortal with heartbreaking eyes, whose touch sets her blood on fire.

A Full Moon On The Rise

With enemies circling, MacRieve spirits Chloe away to the isolated Highland keep of his youth. But once he takes her to his bed, his sensual mate becomes something more than human, evoking his savage past and testing his sanity. On the cusp of the full moon, can he conquer his worst nightmare to save Chloe . . . from himself?

My Review:
This was a fantastic book! And while the main enemy is the past, and the various issues that it's caused MacRieve, there was set up for future bad guys, and continuation of the set up bad guy in Shadow's Claim, which is awesome!

So yeah, Chloe's the daughter of like, the main leader of the Order. And he has 2 names, which it took having them close together for me to realize that he had to, because the last names, Todd, and the other, are very similar, and I wasn't really thinking about that. I knew that they meant her dad, so yeah, I didn't realize that!

We got to see a temporary truce between the VL (the good guys) and the PR (the bad guy) at the auction for Chloe, because she's a pretty good bargaining chip, and a lot of people were affected by the Order, and her dad is the only one left alive that they can actually harm.

Yeah, MacRieve's messed up, he was lured in, seduced/raped, at the age of 9. Because it was against his will, but she was a succubus, who feeds off of sex, so that plays into both parts of the above. Oh, and this went on for 4 years, until his mom found out, and even thought she was pregnant, went to confront the evil one, then got killed by another of the lady's lovers, and then his dad killed the succubus, and the next day, got a friend to kill him.

So yeah, he's scarred by that, so when Chloe turns out to be Cambion, which is half succubus, he freaks out. Add to that he was tortured by the Order? Their relationship has a lot of ups and downs! But he was helped out by Nix, who took him out, and then set him up to be captured, so that he and Chloe could be together. So she has another couple to think about her, to thank her for helping them get together-like worship for a god or goddess, which one of her sisters was thinking about, I believe Regin, in Pleasure of a Dark Prince.

Yeah, this was a pretty spectacular book, and it's set up, for his twin brother's book, which apparently is coming after Dark Skye which I can't wait to read next week, especially since one chapter is Nix's!

Week 35 Review: Stitching Snow

From Goodreads:
Princess Snow is missing.

Her home planet is filled with violence and corruption at the hands of King Matthias and his wife as they attempt to punish her captors. The king will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter back—but that's assuming she wants to return at all.

Essie has grown used to being cold. Temperatures on the planet Thanda are always sub-zero, and she fills her days with coding and repairs for the seven loyal drones that run the local mines.

When a mysterious young man named Dane crash-lands near her home, Essie agrees to help the pilot repair his ship. But soon she realizes that Dane's arrival was far from accidental, and she's pulled into the heart of a war she's risked everything to avoid. With the galaxy's future—and her own—in jeopardy, Essie must choose who to trust in a fiery fight for survival.

My Review:
I absolutely loved this book! It was just so incredible, and in such a great, detailed, unique world, and Essie had 2 pretty different, but both awesome and useful skills-mechanical building and code, and fighting. So yeah, right off the bat, she's a pretty kick ass character.

I really enjoyed her drones, the ones that she upgraded, because they had quirks, like Dimwit, who messed up tasks, but as Dane points out, Dimwit doesn't mess up the really important ones. He just accidentally melds his feet to the floor, or sets things on fire.

I loved all the different places that they went to, how they grew in each visit, learned new things, and yeah, at times, I wondered how there was going to be more story, because what I was reading 3/4's in, was pretty different from the first quarter. Which was just fantastic!

I really enjoyed her and Dane's relationship-it evolved from maybe friendship, to almost hatred, to understanding, to liking each other, falling in love, and yeah, having to juggle that with the responsibilities of leading a rebellion. It was really rather awesome!

Totally enjoyed this book, and what I'd love, is if there was a companion book, we could be in this universe again, see these characters again, but not disturb their happy ending, where they're at, because it's a pretty good place!

Week 35 Review: Foretold

From Goodreads:
It is written that three Sisters of Fate have the power to change the world's destiny. But only if they survive...

The Lockwood triplets have had the prophecy drummed into their heads since birth. Still, Raven, the eldest of the sisters, can't believe it's really happening. She's the reincarnation of a Norse goddess? One of the sisters is destined to die? When it starts snowing in summer in Florida, the sisters fear the worst has come to pass. Ragnarok, the Norse end of the world, has begun.

Raven finds herself the secret protector of Vanir, a boy with two wolves, a knowledge of Norse magic and a sense of destiny he can't quite explain. He's intense, sexy and equally determined to save her when it becomes clear someone is endangering them. Raven doesn't know if getting closer to him will make a difference in the coming battle, but her heart isn't giving her a choice.

Ahead of the sisters is the possibility of death at the hand of a warrior, death by snow, death by water or death by fire.

Or even from something else...

Sisters of Fate

The prophecy doesn't lie: one is doomed to die.

My Review:
This was a very excellent book! I mean, the first line is very catching, I mean, 3 days after the end of the world started, but compared to that, normal accidents still happening? Well, not so normal, because there's no such thing as coincidence when there's magic involved.

My one complaint is, that it almost seemed like they went from one bad thing to another, and usually that's OK, but in this book, it was just a smidgen harder to suspend reality for me, which really sucked, because it was really interesting and action packed, and it was just that bit harder to forget that it wasn't real, but that it was happening in a book.

And that's it. Because I loved everything else about this book, it was quick paced, and there was just such great romance, that they were pretty much instantly connected, and there was the mystery of who was doing this, if it was her mom. Because her mom has control over animals, and she used the spell/potion on other people before. But then her sisters are also thinking that their mom is with them, And then that it turns out that Loki's possessing their mom's body, and can travel really fast? I can't wait to read the next 2 books!

The magic, that was just great, and how she had to work to accept that the Norn's soul was a part of her, accepting her, using her name, and yeah, that was just the ticket to having more control, and making things easier, for when they go out to help her sisters!

I can't wait to read more of this series, because this book was just really fantastic!

Week 35 Review: Reborn

From Goodreads:
Return to the beloved world of Shadow Falls, a camp that teaches supernatural teens to harness their powers—and where a vampire named Della will discover who she’s meant to be.

For Della Tsang, Shadow Falls isn't just a camp: it's home. As a vampire who's never fit in with her human family, it's the one place she can truly be herself. But when a mysterious new guy arrives at camp, Della's whole world is thrown into turmoil. Chase is a vampire with secrets, who knows more than he's telling. But the more time she spends with him, the more she begins to trust this attractive stranger—and feel drawn to him. But romance is the last thing she wants—as she keeps telling Steve, the hunky shapeshifter who won't stop trying to win her heart. And if Della isn't careful, he just might succeed.

When a new case puts everyone she cares about in danger, Della's determined to do everything she can to save them . . . even if it means teaming up with Steve and Chase, who leave her more confused than ever. With their lives on the line, will Della and her friends survive—with their hearts intact?

My Review:
It was so great to read this book! I mean, we get to be in Della's head for the 3rd time, but this time, for a full length book, which yeah! More time in this world, this world that's growing, because we learn more about vampires, even Della, which is the point of the title, Reborn. It's very important to the book!

This book dealt with a few things. Like the discovery that her dad had an identical twin brother, and another sister (the other sister is the mom of her cousin, Chan, the one that accidentally turned her into a vampire) And yeah, this book dealt with Della's search for them.

And she learns that her one aunt was murdered, and her dad was the suspect, which means that it was most likely that her uncle killed her aunt. Which sucks for everyone, since Della was looking for family that knew about her being a vampire, and could accept it.

This book also dealt with her romantic issues, of Steve that she got pretty hot and heavy with in Saved at Sunrise, but then pushed away, again and again. Of Chase, the new vampire, the panty perv, who agitates her, who is very fast, and yeah, that's because's he's a Reborn, a vampire who's gone though the virus stuff twice, and has more power. And Della's a Reborn. So is Burnett.

Burnett and Holiday's baby is born! And Della is the one that deliver's her! And Hannah, named after Holiday's sister, is vampire dominate! And Della saved both Hannah, and Holiday's life. And Della starts to see a ghost, and then yeah, the ghost turns out to be Chan, who died of being Reborn, because not everybody, of the 6 or so of the families that are capable of doing so, survives it. Yeah.

Miranda has a lot of power! When they were at the funeral home that Chan and her uncle used, and it turned out to be a vampire slavery ring, and Miranda just turns them into kangaroos (just like she did to Burnett in Taken at Dusk!) and she did it without thought or preparation, and how the one guy was

This was a pretty spectacular book, and I can't wait to read Eternal!

Week 35 Review: Breaking Point

From Goodreads:
After faking their deaths to escape from prison, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.

Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper's true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….

Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.

Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can't even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and "laying low" is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.

With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back?

My Review:
This was a pretty great book! I wish that it hadn't taken me so long to read it, because I did enjoy reading it! It did have some awkward moments, like when Ember was worrying about the cost of the sniper, seeing how it was going to be bad for the common people, while the resistance of the Wayland Inn was celebrating, but yeah, just great!

I guessed that Cara was the sniper when it was mentioned that she was there in a city that the sniper struck at, and then the shell that Ember found, yeah, connect the dots, and yeah, it was kinda awesome for me when that was confirmed, but not for Ember, going around having people thing that she was the sniper, and then her actively telling the Chicago resistance, even though she wasn't. And then when she figured out some things about that, that she was the scapegoat, that Cara thanked her for that.

We got a few more characters, and some old ones, like Tucker, who was better in this book, though he caused Chase and Ember to be kicked out of Wayland Inn because they didn't want to work with him. And Ember was suspicious of him for most of the book.

We got to go back to their home town, and Ember remembered things from her past, with her mom, which was great, since she is an important part of Ember's life, dead or alive, and we got to see her friend again, running a safe house in Ember's old house. And they got to rescue Rebecca! Though that was hard, that she was pretty injured in her back, that she has trouble walking.

That ending! Devastation, plus the hope that there were some survivors! Can't wait to wait Three now!!! Can't wait to see if they're going to win against the horrible regime that's currently in place!

Week 35 Reviews: Witchstruck, Witchfall

From Goodreads:
If she sink, she be no witch and shall be drowned.

If she float, she be a witch and must be hanged.

Meg Lytton has always known she is different—that she bears a dark and powerful gift. But in 1554 England, in service at Woodstock Palace to the banished Tudor princess Elizabeth, it has never been more dangerous to practise witchcraft. Meg knows she must guard her secret carefully from the many suspicious eyes watching over the princess and her companions. One wrong move could mean her life, and the life of Elizabeth, rightful heir to the English throne.

With witchfinder Marcus Dent determined to have Meg's hand in marriage, and Meg's own family conspiring against the English queen, there isn't a single person Meg can trust. Certainly not the enigmatic young Spanish priest Alejandro de Castillo, despite her undeniable feelings. But when all the world turns against her, Meg must open her heart to a dangerous choice.

The Secret Circle meets The Other Boleyn Girl in Witchstruck, the first book of the magical Tudor Witch trilogy.

From Goodreads:
Her darkest dreams are coming true.

In Tudor England, 1555, Meg Lytton has learned how powerful her magick gift can be. But danger surrounds her and her mistress, the outcast Princess Elizabeth. Nowhere is safe in the court of Elizabeth's fanatical sister, Queen Mary. And as the Spanish Inquisition's merciless priests slowly tighten their grip on the court, Meg's very dreams are disturbed by the ever-vengeful witchfinder Marcus Dent.

Even as Meg tries to use her powers to find guidance, something evil arises, impervious to Meg's spells and hungry to control England's fate. As Meg desperately tries to keep her secret betrothed, the Spanish priest Alejandro de Castillo, out of harm's way, caution wars with their forbidden desire. And with her most powerful enemy poised to strike, Meg's only chance is a heartbreaking sacrifice.

My Review:
I really rather liked these books! I loved the history, being banished, or in the courts, and the magic, and how Meg does learn some new things over the course of these books, and yeah, I know she's going to learn more in the next and last book!

These books had some really great scenes, like the various uses that Meg employed her power for, to help Elizabeth predict the future, seeing how the Queen was just wanting to be pregnant so much that she made her body develop the symptoms of it, in the stars!

Marcus Dent was evil. I mean, wanting to marry her, just because, and then accusing her aunt of being a witch when Meg rejected him, and then making sure her aunt burned to death, and then we find out why he's such a witch hunter-a witch predicted that he'd die at the hands of a witch that could raise a king, which Meg did.

I really didn't like some of Elizabeth's actions. First there was the whole regifting of the King's gift to Meg, and I thought a situation would arise when Meg wore it on a "date" between the King and Elizabeth, but nothing happened, yeah. But then when they went to raise her mom, Elizabeth said that she'd accept the consequences. But then later, when the consequences were that her dad was also brought along, she blamed Meg. Who didn't want to do it in the first place.

And then after all that, when her old nursemaid lady, the one that Elizabeth grew up with, came back, she got rid of Meg to show her power, that Elizabeth couldn't have a suspected witch in her household, Elizabeth just let her go. Even though Meg just had a magical death the night before for Elizabeth. Not cool!

All in all, great books, I utterly enjoyed reading them, and I can't wait to read Witchrise!
