Week 47 Review: Roomies

From Goodreads:
It's time to meet your new roomie.

When East Coast native Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment, she shoots off an e-mail to coordinate the basics: television, microwave, mini-fridge. That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl's summer -- and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room.

As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they've never met.

National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr and acclaimed author Tara Altebrando join forces for a novel about growing up, leaving home, and getting that one fateful e-mail that assigns your college roommate.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. We did go back and forth between Elizabeth (EB) and Lauren, on different sides of the country, about to become college roommates. And it was just a fun read, there were some emotional, difficult moments, but it was a great read!

These are different characters, they've lived different lives. Elizabeth's parents split up when she was 5, because her dad is gay, a dad that currently lives in San Francisco. She's an only child, and there's drama because her mom is dating someone who is married. Oh, and Elizabeth ends up dating his son. So that's fun.

And then there's Lauren, who was an only child for a while-and then her parents had a bunch of kids in a row, she's sharing her room with her single digits aged sisters. So she wanted a single, but she's going to be rooming with Elizabeth. And initially, their emails to each other were a bit awkward, but I loved their developing relationship.

I loved how they bounced their current situations against the other. From Elizabeth's dating drama, to Lauren's developing relationship. I did enjoy that both girls focused on their currently, in person relationships, as well, which helped when there was major drama about Elizabeth's dad. But I enjoyed how it all worked out.

This was a really fun, enjoyable read, and I'm glad that I read it!

Every Thursday I am going to list a book which I really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it! Thanks to Jodie from Books for Company for this meme!

Why the time hasn't come yet...
As always, so many books, so little time! And when it's not around to remind me, I forget about it! But I do want to read it! What about you guys? Happy reading!

High atop Hathorne Hill, near Boston, sits Danvers State Hospital. Built in 1878 and closed in 1992, this abandoned mental institution is rumored to be the birthplace of the lobotomy. Locals have long believed the place to be haunted. They tell stories about the unmarked graves in the back, of the cold spots felt throughout the underground tunnels, and of the treasures found inside: patients' personal items like journals, hair combs, and bars of soap, or even their old medical records, left behind by the state for trespassers to view.

On the eve of the hospital's demolition, six teens break in to spend the night and film a movie about their adventures. For Derik, it's an opportunity to win a filmmaking contest and save himself from a future of flipping burgers at his parents' diner. For the others, it's a chance to be on TV, or a night with no parents. But what starts as a playful dare quickly escalates into a frenzy of nightmarish action. Week 44 Review: How to Save a Life

From Goodreads:
Jill MacSweeney just wishes everything could go back to normal. But ever since her dad died, she's been isolating herself from her boyfriend, her best friends—everyone who wants to support her. And when her mom decides to adopt a baby, it feels like she's somehow trying to replace a lost family member with a new one.

Mandy Kalinowski understands what it's like to grow up unwanted—to be raised by a mother who never intended to have a child. So when Mandy becomes pregnant, one thing she's sure of is that she wants a better life for her baby. It's harder to be sure of herself. Will she ever find someone to care for her, too?

As their worlds change around them, Jill and Mandy must learn to both let go and hold on, and that nothing is as easy—or as difficult—as it seems.

My Review:
So this is a contemporary book, dealing with issues like family, death, and teenage pregnancy, and those themes. And with the dual perspectives of Jill and Mandy, well, we got a more complete story, and I just really enjoyed that!

So you have to know that Jill's mom went on to adopt Mandy's baby, or else, why would they be in the same story? And yeah, again, both perspectives, I loved seeing both sides, a girl who didn't want a sister, a girl who though she couldn't take care of her child. Because these girls were about the same age.

This is also a book on how to deal with grief, all kinds of the stuff. From Jill, with her dad, and Mandy, with her upbringing, not being wanted, and then making a choice because of that, to give up her baby, yeah.

I think it was a really great resolution to the ending, and how things were, that was a really great ending! The characters had a lot of things that they had to deal with, and when they came out of it, they were in better places!

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was really great to read!
