Week 44 Reviews: Lovely Violent Things, Lovely Wicked Things

From Goodreads:
He's the devil. And she's his wicked game.
Book two in the Hollow's Row series.

The night I gave in to Kallum Locke, I sold my soul to the devil. Now that devil has returned for me, a daemon siphoning off what soul I have left.

The Harbinger killer has descended on Hollow's Row amid an active case, where I've been hired as a consultant to profile two killers. One offering gruesome sacrifices to obtain an ancient philosophy, and the other a bad omen from my past.

A dark truth hovers at the edge of my memories—but is it real, or a trick by the chaos magician himself, meant to trap me in his web of lies and corruption.

Kallum is too consuming, his clashing green-and-blue eyes staring into my depths, demanding I feel the frenzy he teased from my soul.

I have to escape him.

I've tasted Halen St. James, my muse of heartbreak. I've sank my teeth into her tender flesh, lapped at her tears, marked her as mine…

So I'll be damned if I let her go now. Not this time—not when I'm so close to revealing our truth. It's easy to be tricked when you believe your own lies. And, oh, how my little Halen loves her pretty lies.

She's obsessed with naming me the killer. She's afraid of me, but I'm not the danger she should fear.

The moth is attracted to sweetness—and my little Halen is the sweetest damn thing.

Halen needs her big bad villain to protect her.

From Goodreads:
Halen:
I've created a monster. When past and present collide, the fallout feels like the death of my morality. Every time I look into Kallum's clashing, feverish eyes, I see a dark omen—the threat of what we'll do to each other if our desires run wild.

While the Hollow's Row case comes to a head, a new heinous player enters the scene. As the Alchemist threatens the town, I'm torn between a promise to help my friend, and my loyalty to Kallum—the man who has sacrificed everything for me.

I've created a monster—but he's my monster. And if I can't control Kallum's chaotic nature, I'll lose him…just as I've lost everyone I've loved.

There could be a future for us, but only if we don't damn ourselves first.

Kallum:
The moment Halen St. James crashed my world, I made a vow to harbor her darkness, the lovely spark who ignited my black soul. But now, it's time for Halen to finally step out of her shadows.

I would do—and have done—anything to keep her mine. I've become a villain to protect her. Even from herself.

When she looks into my eyes with recognition, I'm a man reborn, redeemed by her cleansing fire. Only there's a vital piece of our story missing, and without it, I'll always fear losing her—a primal fear that provokes the demon within.

The truth lies somewhere in the murky marsh waters, where killers and philosophers intwine, obscuring ancient wisdoms and feasting on the sweetest nectar.

I was created for her, to devour her heartbreak, and she was designed for me, the muse to the devil Full list can be found on author's website.

Magical Readathon: Orilium:

OK, so I got 47 posts in 7 days, and it was a pretty great week, I read a good amount of really great books, and I can't wait for this coming week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Hell Bent!

Wealth. Power. Murder. Magic. Alex Stern is back and the Ivy League is going straight to hell.

Find a gateway to the underworld. Steal a soul out of hell. A simple plan, except people who make this particular journey rarely come back. But Galaxy “Alex” Stern is determined to break Darlington out of purgatory—even if it costs her a future at Lethe and at Yale.

Forbidden from attempting a rescue, Alex and Dawes can’t call on the Ninth House for help, so they assemble a team of dubious allies to save the gentleman of Lethe. Together, they will have to navigate a maze of arcane texts and bizarre artifacts to uncover the societies’ most closely guarded secrets, and break every rule doing it. But when faculty members begin to die off, Alex knows these aren’t just accidents. Something deadly is at work in New Haven, and if she is going to survive, she’ll have to reckon with the monsters of her past and a darkness built into the university’s very walls.

Thick with history and packed with Bardugo’s signature twists, Hell Bent brings to life an intricate world full of magic, magic, violence, and all too real monsters.

Week 1 Review: Lovely Bad Things

From Goodreads:
He's the devil. And she's his wicked game.

Halen:
They say eyes are the windows to the soul—but when he looks at me through hues of slate-green and flaring blue embers, I'm terrified of what's watching me from behind his clashing gaze, something primal and feverish that threatens to melt me like fire in ice.

I fear falling into Kallum Locke's pitch-black soul.

But after I'm called to a crime scene to investigate the most gruesome act of violence to descend on the legendary town of Hollow's Row, I have no choice but to turn to Kallum, to the man I had locked away in an asylum for the criminally insane.

He's the leading expert on all things Nietzsche and occult. And now, to get answers, I'm forced to make a deal with the devil himself.

Kallum:
Really, eyes are the windows to the soul? Then I wonder what little Halen St. James thinks of all the cryptic eyes watching her in the killing fields… I wonder if the hairs on her delicate nape lifted away, if a thrilling shiver raced over her soft skin. She's desperate for the answer, and she'll do anything to uncover it—even make a deal with me, dangling freedom like bait on a hook.

But she's far more tempting to sink my teeth into than any lure.

And the pain will taste twice as sweet.

My Review:
This book was wild. I mean, I was expecting it, because it is a romance, and he's a killer, and she works with law enforcement to take down killers. But oh, it was wild, dark and crazy, and I had such a great time reading it!

I will say, that one negative for me was how dramatic things were, that where your milage might vary, but for me, was over-dramatic. Some, I get, it's the whole situation. But it was a bit overdone for my tastes. I still enjoyed it!

It is strange for me, reading this book, because I have read from Trisha Wolfe before, years ago, when I first started blogging, so I don't remember much of it. But it was YA, and so wildly different from this book. Which again, strange, but equally enjoyable!

There was a lot going on, between the current case with the eyes, and the people who disappeared 5 years ago, as well as the charged dynamics between Halen and Kallum. She doesn't trust him, but she is drawn to him, and he's obsessed with her, and has pretty graphic thoughts. It all came together really well!

I had a really great time reading this book, and I can't wait for the sequel!

"The courtroom air is a living, visceral force as it breathes over the crowded bodies in the pews. The weight of it bears down on my uncomfortable dress suit, the material too stiff, the seams slightly off-center, making the atmosphere dense as a current arcs between me and the defendant. A shock of heat licks my skin as his soulless gaze attempts to penetrate my resolve, to try to weaken me. Slate-green and the hottest blue embers, his eyes are a thing of beauty, like being lured into quicksand. The disarming temptation draws you close before you fall into the abyss."-Lovely Bad Things by Trisha Wolfe

That sounds pretty intense! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

OK, so I got 21 posts in 7 days,  and it was a pretty decent week, I read a good amount of books, and we got 2 Christine Feehan covers! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read The Anatomist's Wife, B is for Bigfoot, Grave Peril, House of Salt and Sorrows, How to Save an Undead Life, A Pack of Blood and Lies, A Pack of Vows and Tears, A Pack of Love and Hate, Save the Date, and #murderfunding.

Scotland, 1830. Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sister's estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when her hosts throw a house party for the cream of London society, Kiera is unable to hide from the ire of those who believe her to be as unnatural as her husband, an anatomist who used her artistic talents to suit his own macabre purposes.

Kiera wants to put her past aside, but when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to utilize her knowledge of human anatomy to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gage--a fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. While Gage is clearly more competent than she first assumed, Kiera isn't about to let her guard down as accusations and rumors swirl.

When Kiera and Gage's search leads them to even more gruesome discoveries, a series of disturbing notes urges Lady Darby to give up the inquiry. But Kiera is determined to both protect her family and prove her innocence, even as she risks becoming the next victim...
As a middle-schooler, in "B Is for Bigfoot," Irwin attracts the unwelcome attention of a pair of bullying brothers who are more than they seem, and when Harry steps in, it turns out they have a mystical guardian of their own.
Harry Dresden's faced some pretty terrifying foes during his career. Giant scorpions. Oversexed vampires. Psychotic werewolves. All par for the course for Chicago's only professional wizard. But in all of Harry's years of supernatural sleuthing, he's never faced anything like this: the spirit world's gone postal. All over Chicago, ghosts are causing trouble-and not just of the door-slamming, 'boo'--shouting variety. These ghosts are tormented, violent, and deadly. Someone--or something--is stirring them up to wreak unearthly havoc. But why? And why do so many of the victims have ties to Harry? If Harry doesn't figure it out soon, he could wind up a ghost himself.
Get swept away in Erin A. Craig's mesmerizing House of Salt and Sorrows. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with. . . .

Four of Annaleigh Thaumas's eleven sisters have returned to the Salt, the brackish water that surrounds their lonely island home, their lives cut short, each more tragically than the last. Whispers throughout the Highmoor estate say the girls have been cursed by the gods.

When Annaleigh finds out that her sisters have been sneaking out to attend glittering midnight balls and dance until dawn, she's not sure whether to stop them--or join them. And when she begins to see a series of horrific, ghostly visions and more sisters die, she realizes she must solve the mystery--with the help of Cassius, a sea captain who knows much more about her than he should--and unravel the Thaumas curse before she descends into madness or . . . it claims her next.
Grier Woolworth spends her nights weaving spooky tales of lost souls and tragedies for tourists on the streets of downtown Savannah. Hoop skirt and parasol aside, it's not a bad gig. The pay is crap, but the tips keep the lights on in her personal haunted mansion and her pantry stocked with ramen.

Life is about as normal as it gets for an ex-necromancer hiding among humans. Until the society that excommunicated Grier offers her a second chance at being more than ordinary. Too bad no one warned her the trouble with being extraordinary is it can get you killed.

Warning: This book contains one ex-con/ex-heiress with a pet zombie parakeet who lives next door to her ex-army/ex-crush. Brace yourself, we're talking more exes than a pirate treasure map here.
The primal rule of winning: don't fall in love with the contender.

Three months shy of her eighteenth birthday, Ness is forced to return to Colorado. Even though it's been six years, and the wolves of her all-male pack don't recognize her, she recognizes them. People who shun others because of their gender are hard to forget.

Especially Liam Kolane—son of Heath, the crudest and cruelest Alpha to have ruled the Boulder Pack. Liam is as handsome as he is infuriating, as kind as he is punishing, and he makes Ness's traitorous heart race, which isn't good. After all, he's a Kolane. Like father like son, right?

When Heath dies, Liam vies to become the new Alpha and no one dares challenge him.

Except Ness.

Thus begins a treacherous game.

The rules: winner takes all…including loser's life.
She thought the fight was over but it was only just beginning.

Ness Clark's place amongst the Boulders and at Liam's side is compromised. First, when her cousin claims Ness helped him elude his death sentence. And then, when August Watt, Ness's childhood friend, comes home to Boulder.

Although August's plan was to pledge himself and return to active duty, he finds himself incapable of leaving. This becomes problematic for Liam and Ness, because a mating link has clicked into place between Ness and the ex-marine. If not consumed, the link will fade, but that’ll take months. How long and hard can two people fight a physical attraction that renders their bodies unreceptive to anyone's but their mates?

Ness is tired of fighting, tired of having to prove herself worthy of her pack’s trust and of her Alpha's affection. But when an enemy pack arrives and threatens the Boulders, she has two choices: step aside and let the wolves who have pushed her away fend for themselves, or step up and help them fight the newcomers.

Ness has never stepped aside…not for anyone.

Why would she start now?
ONLY ONE CAN WIN.

Volunteering to duel alongside Liam Kolane against the ruthless Creek Alpha could get Ness killed, but the alternative, leaving her hot-headed Alpha to die alone in the dueling ring isn't an option. Not even when he places ridiculous conditions on her, like not spending time alone with August, her intended mate.

Ness didn't want a mate, but that was before August stepped back into her life, before he picked up the scattered pieces of her heart. Between their shared history and the magical tether that binds them, Ness finds herself falling dangerously hard for the sexy shifter.

But Liam's heart is on the line. A heart that still beats for Ness.

Only one man can win her love, the same way only one Alpha can rise from the duel.

Let the fight begin...
Charlie Grant's older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can't wait for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. There's the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won't stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren't speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo. Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner's nephew is unexpectedly, distractedly cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she'll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
WELCOME TO WHO WANTS TO BE A PANIAC?, the latest reality TV show on the hunt for the next big-hit serial killer. But don't worry—no one is actually going to murder anyone, as real as the fake gore and pretend murder may appear . . . uh, right?

Seventeen-year-old Becca Martinello is about to find out. When her perfectly normal soccer mom dies in a car crash, a strange girl named Stef appears to let Becca know that her deceased mom was none other than one of Alcatraz 2.0’s most popular serial killers—Molly Mauler. Soon, Becca ends up on Who Wants to Be a Painiac? to learn the truth about her mom's connection to Molly Mauler, but things turn sinister when people are murdered IRL. Will Becca uncover dark secrets and make it out of the deadly reality show alive? Or will she get cut?

Week 31 Review: Cellar Door

From Goodreads:
After witnessing a murder, Makenna Davies is abducted by the hooded vigilante, Luke Easton, and taken to his underground lair where she must unravel the mystery of her captor and the dark secret that entangles both their lives.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book! It's on the shorter end, only 150 ebook pages, but there was a great mystery, and I enjoyed spending time with these characters! It won't be for everyone, since Luke kidnaps her and then they start a romantic relationship, but it was a pretty darned good book for me!

Both Makenna and Luke are obsessed with this case, one way or another. Makenna, it's more two parts, in which she has a case of a kidnapped girl and couldn't put it down, and then her partner-both as a cop and romantically-was killed and she was pretty much blamed.

Luke, well, his sister was kidnapped, raped and brutalized, and killed. So he wants revenge on the guys who did it his sister. Which is understandable, to a point. And the line moves because this is fiction. He still goes to some pretty unbelievable lengths!

There was a lot of talk about being crazy in this book. Because there some physiologically torture, for both of them, entwined in this dark case. And it turns out that there was more then meets the eye, and yeah, there were some shocking twists!

Yeah, this was a dark and thrilling read and I really enjoyed it!

The war against BioZenith is on.

Since she first came into her mysterious new superpowers, Emily has watched one of her packmates disappear through an interdimensional portal; she’s been hunted by creepy, body-snatching Shadowmen; she’s managed to form an alliance with the same telekinetic cheerleaders who once tried to take her down; and she’s discovered that her believed-to-be-dead mother is one of the BioZenith scientists responsible for her strange abilities.

Now it’s up to the Deviants to put together the last pieces of the puzzle, which includes tracking down the final, mystery member of their kind and forcing their parents to reveal why they mutated their own children. Emily fears the answer is far more sinister than anyone ever thought: after all, why would a parent risk a child’s life unless the stakes were high…scary, world-ending high?

Tired of being at the mercy of adult conspiracies, Emily forms a plan with the other Deviants: Destroy BioZenith before anyone can use the knowledge within the facility to aid the Shadowmen. But that’s only if BioZenith—or something worse—doesn’t capture them first.

Things aren't pretty for Emerson Watts.

Em was sure there couldn't be anything worse than being a brainiac the body of a teenaged supermodel.

But it turned out she was wrong. Because that supermodel could turn out to have a mother who's gone mysteriously missing, a brother who's shown up on her doorstep demanding answers, a former best friend who's intent on destroying Stark Enterprises to avenge the death of his lost love, and a British heartthrob who's written a song about her that's topping the charts.

How can Em balance all that with school, runway shows, and weekend jaunts to St. Johns — especially when she's got ex-boyfriends crawling out of the woodwork who want more than just a photo op; a sister who is headed to the high school cheerleading championships; a company she represents that seems to be turning to the dark side...

Not to mention trying to convince the love of her life that models aren't really airheads after all...especially one model in particular.

But then, nobody said it was going to be easy being Nikki.
