Week 48 Review: Together at Midnight

From Goodreads:
What does it really mean to be kind . . . and why does it sometimes feel like the hardest thing in the world to do? High school senior Kendall, who just returned from a life-changing semester in Europe, and Max, who is drifting his way through a gap year before college, struggle with these questions when they witness a tragic accident in New York City during the holiday season. Racked with guilt, the two accept a dare to perform random acts of kindness to strangers. The challenge pulls these two teens, who have a history together from back home, closer and closer as they explore a vibrant city filled with other people's stories and secrets.

Kendall and Max can't deny their growing bond, even though they both have other romantic entanglements and uncertain futures. As the clock counts down on New Year's Eve, will they find themselves together at midnight?

My Review:
I had a really good time reading this book! I have enjoyed some of her other books, and this book did sound really good. This is another case where I picked it up because I didn't want to miss anything, but I know that I don't enjoy contemporaries as much as other genres.

The idea of being dared to perform random acts of kindness, that's such a good idea, the world always needs more kindness. Especially when they're feeling all sorts of things after an accident that they couldn't do something more to help, that not everybody survived it.

Getting to know these two on this journey was really good, and that we also got bits and pieces of the stories of the people they were helping, was really great. You never know what someone is going through, and just how you could help, so that was really heartwarming.

Of course I want more after that ending, because I always do, but I'm pretty satisfied with where we left them, I just wish we could've gotten more details. Between the people they helped, and the relationship that built between them, I had a pretty great time reading this book!

I'm glad that I read this book, and I can't wait to read more by Jennifer Castle.

Teaser Tuesday #659, November 28th

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Today's teaser comes from Together at Midnight by Jennifer Castle, page 10.

"Okay, that's way too much pressure. I cross out Perfect and replace it with Not Suck, knowing full well that even Not Suck might be reaching for the stars."

That doesn't sound good! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Next to be Published November Update 29

OK, so I got 63 posts in 7 days, it was a pretty great week, I read a good number of books and I really enjoyed them! Plus Dobby is healing well from surgery, and I've had him the past couple of nights, because when he was by himself, he was waking up the parents up at 5 because he was lonely. But with me, he's getting up around 7 or 8. I love cuddling with him, but the cone of shame, not so much! And poor Jax, because now he's by himself. Can't wait for the 2nd when he gets his stitches out! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read the last few books left on my N.E.W.T.'s TBR!

The Story: I saw The Beginning of After on NetGalley, it sounded great, so I requested and got it, and it was really great, and I've enjoyed her next book, and I can't wait to read more of her books!

Week 34 Review: You Look Different in Real Life

From Goodreads:
Readers of John Green, Sarah Dessen, and Laurie Halse Anderson will be touched by the emotional depth and realistic characters of Jennifer Castle's teen novel You Look Different in Real Life.

Justine charmed the nation in a documentary film featuring five kindergartners. Five years later, her edgy sense of humor made her the star of a second movie that caught up with the lives of the same five kids. Now Justine is sixteen, and another sequel is in the works. Justine isn't ready to have viewers examining her life again. She feels like a disappointment, not at all like the girl everyone fell in love with in the first two movies. But, ready or not, she and the other four teens will soon be in front of the cameras again.

Smart, fresh, and funny, You Look Different in Real Life is an affecting novel about life in an age where the lines between what's personal and what's public aren't always clear.

My Review:
Man, I really enjoyed reading this book! I twas just a fun ride of a book, dealing with a group of kids who were periodically filmed for a documentary about them in various points of their lives. And I really enjoyed it!

The relationships between these characters was just so interesting. I mean, they were filmed twice now, but they weren't all friends. And some of the relationships had really gone badly, like Justine and Rory, and Felix and Nate. Though yeah that Justine and Felix had developed a friendship between 11 and 16!

I really enjoyed these characters on a road trip. It was just them, part of the time, and that gave them a lot of time to deal with their issues with each other, and that combined with the quiet moments made for really compelling reading!

That ending! It was so perfect to read, because this whole book, Justine has been worried that she was boring. That she peaked at age 11. And while this book has a lot going on for the other kids, Justine finds a talent that really suits her, and she got a pretty satisfying ending! I was so happy for her!

This book was a really great, fun read, and I had a great time reading it!

Last Letter, First Letter Reading Challenge Update 77

So I read my next LLFL Book!

So I read You Look Different in Real Life!

Yep. Happy reading!

Here's the link to this year's post with my journey.

What it is:

You pick a book, read it. Then you look at the last letter of the title, for example, "The Adventures of Tom Saywer." Then you take that last letter, and search you TBR piles for a book starting with the last letter, so continuing the example, someone could read "Rotters" next, and then a title that starts with "s."

Rules:
1. Have fun!
2. Read!
3. The last letter of the book you read must be the first letter of the next book you read.
4. Words like "the," "a," "and," and those such don't count as the first letter.
5. If a letter becomes overused, like d, e, l, w, ext, and you run out of books that you really want to read for this challenge, cycle in letters that don't often get used like a, b, i, k, p, ext, and note what you cycle in, where!

First Lines Friday #483, August 14th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Sometimes, I hit pause at a random moment when I'm on film and stare at my eyes, and try to figure out why they chose me. With the others, it's obvious. Rory says those accidentally hilarious things, and Felix keeps bursting into song. Keira reads an advanced-level social studies textbook aloud. Then there's Nate, with that whole Johnny Appleseed vibe." -You Look Different in Real Life by Jennifer Castle

That doesn't sound like she thinks as highly as herself as the others. And that's too bad! Especially since she's in high school, when self confidence usually takes the most hits. Must read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Week 31 Review: The Beginning of After

From Goodreads:
Anyone who's had something truly crappy happen to them will tell you: It's all about Before and After. What I'm talking about here is the ka-pow, shake-you-to-your-core-and-turn-your-bones-to-plastic kind of crappy.

Sixteen-year-old Laurel's world changes instantly when her parents and brother are killed in a terrible car accident. Behind the wheel is the father of her bad-boy neighbor, David Kaufman, whose mother is also killed. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Laurel navigates a new reality in which she and her best friend grow apart, boys may or may not be approaching her out of pity, overpowering memories lurk everywhere, and Mr. Kaufman is comatose but still very much alive. Through it all there is David, who swoops in and out of Laurel's life and to whom she finds herself attracted against her better judgment. She will forever be connected to him by their mutual loss—a connection that will change them both in unexpected ways.

My Review:
This book was interesting, and emotional. If I was the type to cry while reading, my eyes would definitely would have at least have a tear. I enjoyed reading about the characters problems, and what they did to deal with them.

I liked reading about trying to find normalcy, in tragedy, and trying to find out what you wanted when you really weren't sure, and trying to work through everything that was happening.

I really liked the pets, they were a good part, a good support, and I liked how 1 dog was kept close to both Laurel, and David. It was almost like they were co-owners of him, and he had to go back and forth between the 2, and I just really liked that!

I also liked the relationship drama, between friends, between maybe-more-than-friends, and  between more-than-friends. It was complicated, and messy, and human. And humans aren't perfect, that's why things break, and why things don't last.

So I really, really enjoyed reading this book, so you guys better check it out when it comes out in a month!
