22 Books to Read in 2022 Update 10

So I read my next books for the 22 Books to Read in 2022 Challenge!

So I read Shadow Girl by Liana Liu from the Edelweiss list, and Fox Forever by Mary E. Pearson from the NetGalley list!

Yep. Happy reading!

Here's the link to this year's post with my journey.

But to recap, I wanted to do a version of These Books Will Self Destruct in 12 months without the self destruct. I wanted to read books that I've had for a while, that I really needed to get read, but maybe I forgot about them or that I had them. So I made 2 lists, one for each way I have them, as physical books, and as ARC's, half from NetGalley, and half from Edelweiss.

Random:

OK, so I got 49 posts in 7 days, the end of the year came, and here's hoping that 2023 is better! It's nice that I have today off, and I'm going to sleep in darn it, I don't have the doggies, I don't have work, I don't need to be up before 8, let alone 4, 5, and 6 am! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Tress of the Emerald Sea! Which I'll accomplish, because I actually read it yesterday! It was a great start to the year! Especially since the 1st was the 4 year anniversary of Winky's passing.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Week 52 Review: Shadow Girl

From Goodreads:
The Memory Key author Liana Liu delivers a thrilling story of one girl struggling to claim her own identity while becoming an unwitting participant in the strange fate of a wealthy dynasty.

The house on Arrow Island is full of mystery.

Yet, when Mei arrives, she can't help feeling relieved. She's happy to spend the summer in an actual mansion tutoring a rich man's daughter if it means a break from her normal life—her needy mother, her delinquent brother, their tiny apartment in the city. And Ella Morison seems like an easy charge, sweet and well behaved.

What she doesn't know is that something is very wrong in the Morison household.

Though Mei tries to focus on her duties, she becomes increasingly distracted by the family's problems and her own complicated feelings for Ella's brother, Henry. But most disturbing of all are the unexplained noises she hears at night—the howling and thumping and cries.

Mei is a sensible girl. She isn't superstitious; she doesn't believe in ghosts. Yet she can't shake her fear that there is danger lurking in the shadows of this beautiful house, a darkness that could destroy the family inside and out...and Mei along with them.

My Review:
Oh man, I had a really great time reading this book! I loved her first book, but this one went in wildly different direction, so I was a bit cautious about it. I loved Mei, and watching her navigate the complexities of being a tutor for this family on a small island.

The synopsis is a bit misleading. There's a bit of potential paranormal events that happened, but not a lot, and they were able to be mundanely explained away. And it wasn't really the focus, which was on the Morison family.

There is of course Ella, her charge, who was shy and so adorable. Then there's her brother, Henry, who caused some mixed feelings for Mei. Their mother, who seemed to think that Mei could take on other tasks besides tutoring, which was so annoying! The grandfather, who And all the other family members and their dramas.

I really enjoyed watching Mei's journey in this book. She's polite, but within, she's pretty judgemental, but the Morison family is hot mess. But her relationship with Ella was fantastic, she was supportive, and I really enjoyed reading about the pair of them!

This was a really great book, and I'm a little sad, because it's now the end of 2022, and there doesn't seem to be more books by Liana Liu out there. At least the two that we got were really great!

Random Reads #522, November 18th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 2620 which turned out to be Shadow Girl by Liana Liu! It's been on my TBR pile since December 16th, 2017, and I added it because I enjoyed her other book and it sounded really great! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Week 21 Review: The Memory Key

From Goodreads:
In a five-minutes-into-the-future world, a bereaved daughter must choose between losing memories of her mother to the haze of time and the reality-distorting, visceral pain of complete, perfect recall.

Lora Mint is determined not to forget.

Though her mother's been dead for five years, Lora struggles to remember every detail about her—most importantly, the specific events that occurred the night she sped off in her car, never to return.

But in a world ravaged by Vergets disease, a viral form of Alzheimer's, that isn't easy. Usually Lora is aided by her memory key, a standard-issue chip embedded in her brain that preserves memories just the way a human brain would. Then a minor accident damages Lora's key, and her memories go haywire. Suddenly Lora remembers a moment from the night of her mother's disappearance that indicates her death was no accident. Can she trust these formerly forgotten memories? Or is her ability to remember every painful part of her past driving her slowly mad—burying the truth forever?

Lora's longing for her lost mother and journey to patch up her broken memories is filled with authentic and poignant emotion. Her race to uncover the truth is a twisty ride. In the end, Liana Liu's story will spark topical conversations about memory and privacy in a world that is reliant on increasingly invasive forms of technology.

My Review:
Reading this book, I'm so glad that I did! I mean, I just read Killer Instinct and Killer Within, but once I was done, I opened a lot of books up, and didn't get very far into them before I had to move to another one. Then I got to this book, and the pages flew!

The idea of the memory key, pretty awesome. Sucks that to have a perfect memory, that would would be in pain. But that a company would in control of that, well, that was not a good idea at all! Of course they would misuse that power!

There was the whole economical bill, and people were arguing about it, how the liberals wanted it, and the conservatives didn't, but we weren't told what exactly it did. Just that the economy was crappy, and there weren't a lot of jobs. And that was a running plot through the book. Why some characters did what they did.

It really sucks for Lora, because with the perfect memory for a while, all the little annoyances came up, and together, and caused conflict. And her mom, and the mystery there, and how that ended, was just not fun at all! It wasn't resoled, but it was on the way there. Just had to expose it, and until then, live with it. And that sucks, but there were things to look forward to!

I enjoyed this a lot, it was a really great book! And I'd love a companion book, just to see the fallout! Like her best friend! That would be so awesome!
