Week 48 Review: The Queen's Spade

From Goodreads:
In this riveting historical thriller that's loosely inspired by true-life events, The Count of Monte Cristo meets Bridgerton as revenge, romance, and twisted secrets take center stage in Victorian England's royal court when Sally, a kidnapped African princess and goddaughter to Queen Victoria, plots her way to take down the monarchy that stole her from her homeland.

A young lady can take only so many injuries before humiliation and insult forge a vow of revenge . . .

The year is 1862 and murderous desires are simmering in England. Nineteen-year-old Sarah Bonetta Forbes (Sally), once a princess of the Egbado Clan, desires one thing above all revenge against the British Crown and its system of colonial 'humanitarianism,' which stole her dignity and transformed her into royal property. From military men to political leaders, she's vowed to ruin all who've had a hand in her afflictions. The top of her list? Her godmother, Britain's mighty monarch, Queen Victoria herself.

Taking down the Crown means entering into a twisted game of court politics and manipulating the Queen's inner circle—even if that means aligning with a dangerous yet alluring crime lord in London's underworld and exploiting the affections of Queen Victoria's own son, Prince Albert, as a means to an end. But when Queen Victoria begins to suspect Sally's true intentions, she plays the only card in Victorian society that could possibly cage Sally once again: marriage. Because if there's one thing Sally desires more than revenge, it's her freedom. With time running out and her wedding day looming, Sally's vengeful game of cat and mouse turns deadly as she's faced with the striking revelation that the price for vengeance isn't just paid in blood. It means sacrificing your heart.

Loosely inspired by the true story of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Queen Victoria's African goddaughter, The Queen's Spade is a lush and riveting historical thriller perfect for fans of A Dowry of Blood and Grave Mercy.

Week 48 Review: The Deathly Grimm

From Goodreads:
The spellbinding sequel to Kathryn Purdie's bestselling dark fairytale, where our main characters must return to the forest—and its monsters.

The story hasn't ended yet.

After surviving the Forest Grimm and defeating the Wolf, Clara and Axel have made it back to their village, the one place they can be safe behind the forest's borders. But when the forest itself begins luring in more villagers, it's clear that Clara and Axel have only treated the symptoms of the forest's curse, not the cause—and it's getting worse.

Burdened with visions of the past and learning to navigate her fragile new relationship with Axel, Clara finds herself entering the forest with Axel yet again to discover the truth once and for all: the identity of the murderer who caused the curse. As they fight murderous woodsmen with incomprehensible riddles, ladies who will drag you into an eternal dance, and ghosts with the power to wield the forest against them, Clara and Axel realize the stakes are higher than ever. If they don't survive the dark, deadly twists of the forest once more, not only will they never escape, they may also no longer have a home to escape to.

Romantic, eerie, and beautiful, The Deathly Grimm is the triumphant conclusion to Kathryn Purdie's bestselling Forest Grimm duology.

Week 48 Review: The Study of Fire

From Goodreads:
"What happens if he returns to our world?"
"It will burn."

There's just no rest for Valek, Ixia's Chief of Security. Challenges are constant and new problems arrive daily, including a request to help Castletown's watch solve the mystery of a string of nighttime disturbances, and keeping a close eye on the Commander's food taster as she schemes her way back into business. As if that isn't enough, the Commander's life is threatened.

Is the assassination attempt on the Commander a declaration of war by the Sitian Council, or is it a ruse by an unknown party to incite a war between Ixia and Sitia? Valek is sent to Sitia to discover the answer and deal with the threat.

Unfortunately, the problem turns out to be much bigger than even the council and the master magicians can handle. An unsanctioned clan with powerful warpers is plotting to take over both countries. As the danger heats up, Valek and Yelena must reunite and stop the group before they can set their entire world on fire.

A companion novel to Fire Study, The Study of Fire reveals Valek's side of the story. Find out what problems Valek tackles in Ixia before he joins Yelena in fighting against a unstoppable enemy.

My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I love Maria V. Snyder's writing so much, and this world and these characters are so near and dear to me. To get this final story form Valek's perspective, yeah, I loved it, so we've had his and Yelena's complete story, since the 3rd trilogy in the world, featuring them, was dual perspective.

One thing that I've loved from the beginning of Valek's Adventures, is seeing the time where they were apart, and just what they got up to. They do spend a good chunk of time apart in this book again, which lead to some interesting developments, like seeing the trio win that fight to become his seconds.

Though on the flip side of that, we also got to see the time that she thought he was dead, and the time that she spent in the Fire Realm. Which were not great experiences for Valek, but I'm glad that we got to see what it was like for him, to have a complete picture of the story,

I am sad to sad goodbye. Who knows, we might get more time spent in this world (it kinda felt like the next generation, or at least a half generation off, might get stories, but they might not, Nothing has been announced either way that I've seen, so if it was the last, then I'm sad, but glad that we got this book, and if not, I'm glad that we're getting more!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait for whatever is next from Maria V. Snyder!

Week 48 Review: Destroy All Monsters

From Goodreads:
A crucial, genre-bending tale, equal parts Ned Vizzini and Patrick Ness, about the life-saving power of friendship.

Solomon and Ash both experienced a traumatic event when they were twelve.

Ash lost all memory of that event when she fell from Solomon's treehouse. Since then, Solomon has retreated further and further into a world he seems to have created in his own mind. One that insulates him from reality, but crawls with foes and monsters . . . in both animal and human form.

As Solomon slips further into the place he calls Darkside, Ash realizes her only chance to free her best friend from his pain is to recall exactly what happened that day in his backyard and face the truth—together.

Fearless and profound, Sam J. Miller's follow up to his award-winning debut novel, The Art of Starving, spins an intimate and impactful tale that will linger with readers.

From Goodreads:
Dark magic courses through Zarya's veins—magic that could save countless lives… or doom her world.

Shattered by Rabin's betrayal, Zarya vows to leave all thoughts of him behind. In the dangerous city of Ishaan, she joins an ancient struggle for freedom.

Ishaan is a city of violent contrasts. Nobles and scholars live in golden luxury. But thousands of vanshaj workers are born into magical slavery—in punishment for a crime forgotten centuries ago.

Zarya is outraged, and certain that the fate of the vanshaj is linked to her own forbidden magic. She joins a band of rebels battling for their freedom, and with Yasen at her side she throws herself into the fight.

On a deadly raid, Zarya uncovers the key to freeing the vanshaj for ever. But to use it, she must harness a power that could tear her apart.

Only one person can give Zarya the strength to reach her destiny. The one who ignited her magic. Who brings her more pleasure and more pain than any other. The last person she wants to see right now. Rabin.

Week 48 Review: Warrior of Legend

From Goodreads:
Picking up where #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake's epic fantasy Champion of Fate left off, Reed is now an Aristene, but old flames and old foes rear their heads during her next quest.

Reed is officially a member of the immortal order of the Aristene. She even has a new name: Machianthe. It's everything she's ever dreamed of—so why isn’t she happy?

Maybe it's because every hero she helps can only find glory at the cost of their life. Or maybe it's because she can't stop thinking about the prince she left behind.

Now Reed looks for any opportunity to help with low-risk hero's trials. And a princess looking for a glorious marriage? Nothing could be less dangerous. But Hestion is one of the suitors, and while Reed is occupied trying to win him back, an old danger is gaining strength.

Week 48 Review: The Library of Shadows

From Goodreads:
Funny, moving, and heart-achingly real, this romantic romp and paranormal romcom debut--through a haunted library with trapdoors, ghosts, and memories--is full of great love that triumphs over even death, perfect for fans of Ninth House and Cemetery Boys.

Radcliffe Prep. The third most haunted school in the country, where a student disappearance isn't uncommon and no one dares stay in the library after dark. And Este Logano enrolls with the hopes of finding her dead father.

Not literally, of course. She doesn't believe in ghosts. Going to her dad's school just seems like her best hope at figuring out who he was.

But then Este meets Mateo, who is maybe--probably--definitely--a real ghost. And an annoying one at that.

When Mateo frames Este for the theft of a rare book from the library's secret spire and then vanishes, Este will have to track him down or risk being expelled and leaving Radcliffe early just like her father did.

Except following her father's footsteps might be more dangerous than Este ever anticipated. As she investigates the library with its secret passageways, hidden tunnels, and haunted halls, she learns that the student disappearances aren't just myth. And if she isn't careful, she'll be next.

My Review:
I had a fantastic time reading this book! I really enjoyed her 2nd book, so I had to pick up this one, as well, because it also sounded really great! And it's too bad that it slipped my mind for so long, because I had a terrific time reading it!

We're quickly put into the thick of things, with Mateo, Este and the theft, as well as the mystery with her dad, I just had to keep reading and finding out what was going to happen next. That her dad died when she was pretty young, and she's not really had stability since, going to the school where he did when he was her age, even though he was kicked out, that made her want to be there make sense.

One thing that I had to look up, was whether or not this was the same school from her other book, and if that one teacher was the one there. Because just the idea that they were set in this shared world, yeah, I loved that idea. And yeah, it is the same school, but not the same teacher.

How things came together, with what was happening with the ghosts and who was behind that, that was superb to read! Taking that down, and how it was tied to what happened with her dad, was such a great story. Having this time to really get to know him, who he was, was great for her grieving process, so I'm glad that she got that time.

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Rachel Moore!

Week 48 Review: We Did Nothing Wrong

From Goodreads:
Lia thought of the dark night, of the broken street light.

Had Diana gone out to meet her? Had she been waiting for her, alone in the park?

Or had someone been waiting for Diana?

Lia and Diana are the It girls of Empire Hill High. Their lives are perfect....until Diana disappears and the rumors start flying.

Everyone thinks Diana is a runaway, including the police. Lia is secretly convinced it's all a prank. Then she finds a crushed red rose tied with a candy-cane ribbon where Diana went missing. And next to it, a

YOU

It's the same ribbon Lia's received on gifts from a "secret admirer." Did someone come for Diana that night? And will Lia be next?

My Review:
I had a blast reading this book! I always love Hannah Jayne mysteries, and the synopsis of this one sounded really intriguing! I wanted to get to know these friends, and find out what was going on with Diana, and the secret admirer, and what their intentions were!

Alongside Lia, I wondered if maybe Diana was behind her disappearance. Because while they were childhood friends, they have been drifting apart, and grievances are building up, with Diana always getting the spotlight, and Lia and Eli, Diana's boyfriend, have something building between them. So I was interested to see if this book would go in that direction.

Lia is a teenager, her brain is still developing. Which sometimes meant that she did some not-smart things that I, as an adult, was shaking my head at. Like there was that one rose left on her back stair after she had brought it up to her parents. Why didn't she show them this new one, like, someone is sneaking around their backyard in a time where her best friend has gone missing. That's not normal behaviour, and could've helped her case. Alas.

Reading that ending was so satisfying! After all that had happened, I'm glad that it worked out that way. It was such a thrilling ending, and I wanted the bad guy to go down! The connections between them all have been battered, but they got through it, and I'm so glad! Though I do wish we could've had a bit more of the time after, because it was just done.

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Hannah Jayne!

Week 48 Review: Daydream

From Goodreads:
The third in the New York Times bestselling Maple Hills series follows fan-favorite Henry and a bookish fellow student who come up with a plan to help them both overcome their respective challenges in a difficult year.

When his procrastination lands him in a difficult class with his least favorite professor, Henry Turner knows he's going to have to work extra hard to survive his junior year of college. And now with his new title of captain for the hockey team—which he didn't even want—Henry absolutely cannot fail. Enter Halle Jacobs, a fellow junior who finds herself befriended by Henry when he accidentally crashes her book club.

Halle may not have the romantic pursuits of her favorite fictional leads, but she's an academic superstar, and as soon as she hears about Henry's problems with his class reading material, she offers to help. Too bad being a private tutor isn’t exactly ideal given her own studies, job, book club, and the novel she's trying to write. But new experiences are the key to beating her writer's block, and Henry's promising to be the one to give them to her.

They just need to stick to their rule book.

Oh, and not fall in love.

Week 48 Reviews: Crossed, Crossed Extended Epilogue

He is righteousness. She is sin.

Father Cade Frederic is a holy man. Brought up in the streets of Paris, he has dedicated his life to the church. But there's a monster that lingers just beneath the surface. A sickness. One that bleeds darkness and feeds on the damned. When he's tasked to become the priest in Festivale, Vermont, a town both beautiful in architecture and riddled with despair, his sickness sings, demanding he rid the place of evil.

Amaya Paquette is Festivale's beautiful mystery. She spends her days caring for her younger brother and her nights transforming into Esmeralda, dancing for greedy eyes and shameless lips. Although she longs for love, she shies away from companionship, afraid of being abandoned again.

When Father Cade lays eyes on Amaya, he finds himself ensnared, convinced she's using witchcraft to lure him to her. He can't eat. Can't breathe. Can't think unless it's of her.

And temptation is a devastating mistress.

She's his weakness, so he decides he'll be her demise . . . even if it means killing the only woman he might ever love.

Contains mature themes.

Week 48 Review: Spy x Family: The Official Guide―Eyes Only

From Goodreads:
The official guide to the hit manga Spy x Family!

The intimate secrets of the Forger family are revealed in this ultimate behind-the-scenes guide! Packed with character details, never-before-seen illustrations, in-depth interviews with creator Tatsuya Endo, and much more, this is a must-have for fans and collectors alike.

Includes behind-the-scenes details covering the first nine volumes of the hit manga, as well as tribute illustrations from sixteen artists, including Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan), Yuji Kaku (Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku), and Kazue Kato (Blue Exorcist)!

My Review:
I had a great time reading this guide, getting those interviews with other creators, the tribute illustrations, and all this collected information of the series to this point! And I always want more, to deepen my understanding, and this definitely gave me that!

Going in, I wasn't sure when the best point would be to read it, so I put it at the end, when I got it from the library. But if there's a choice, then after volume 9, since this was published after that, and events in the following volumes, like learning more about Loid's past and why he became a spy, haven't happened yet.

This has a bunch of information, from character bios and character designs. The recap of the episodes with some comments from the characters, as well as later on, the notes from Tatsuya Endo and his editor, Shihei Lin on the episodes, was interesting to read. The piece of information that I found the most interesting, was the chairs for the covers of the volumes, and what famous chair was chosen and why, and that the things under or behind the chair are what they're trying hide. Loved that!

For some reason, I thought that the Shopkeeper as a lady, not a guy, and it took reading this one where they refer to the character as he and him, so yeah, good to know. So just learning that was a great result of me reading this guide!

Loved reading this guide, and I can't wait to read more in the series!

Inesa lives with her brother in a half-sunken town where they scrape by running a taxidermy shop. Unbeknownst to Inesa, their cruel and indolent mother has accrued an enormous debt—enough to qualify one of her children for Caerus's livestreamed assassination the Lamb's Gauntlet.

Melinoë is a Caerus assassin, trained to track and kill the sacrificial Lambs. The product of neural reconditioning and physiological alteration, she is a living weapon, known for her cold brutality and deadly beauty. She has never failed to assassinate one of her marks.

When Inesa learns that her mother has offered her as a sacrifice, at first she despairs—the Gauntlet is always a bloodbath for the impoverished debtors. But she's had years of practice surviving in the apocalyptic wastes, and with the help of her hunter brother, she might stand a chance of staying alive.

For Melinoë, this is a game she can't afford to lose. Despite her reputation for mercilessness, she is haunted by painful flashbacks. After her last Gauntlet, where she broke down on livestream, she desperately needs redemption.

As Mel pursues Inesa across the wasteland, both girls begin to question Inesa wonders if there's more to life than survival, while Mel wonders if she's capable of more than killing.
