"The scream rings out beside me, piercing my ears, tearing through the whistling wind. I feel my friend’s arms on me, her face buried in my neck. Even as her fingertips dig through the fabric of my coat and her tears wet my cheek, I can’t console her. The leather boots I purchased just for this trip are frozen in place, as if nailed to the moss-laden forest floor. My lips are paralyzed in their parted half-moon state.
