Week 41 Reviews: Lost Night, The Butterfly Clues

From Goodreads:
Sapphire knows she has to avoid trouble if she's going to survive in Neverland, the seedy neighborhood of Cleveland she now calls home. Other girls here have gone missing when they didn't play by the rules: the "lost girls," she calls them. Like her, they're all runaways - no one to notice if they vanish for good.

And Sapphire knows, too, that falling for Bird is only going to cause trouble. She just doesn't know how soon, or how bad... And whether that trouble will come from the dangers of Neverland or from Bird himself.

All she knows is that this will be their last night together - or the night she's lost forever.

Penelope (Lo) Marin has always loved to collect beautiful things. Her dad's consulting job means she's grown up moving from one rundown city to the next, and she's learned to cope by collecting (sometimes even stealing) quirky trinkets and souvenirs in each new place--possessions that allow her to feel at least some semblance of home.

But in the year since her brother Oren's death, Lo's hoarding has blossomed into a full-blown, potentially dangerous obsession. She discovers a beautiful, antique butterfly pendant during a routine scour at a weekend flea market, and recognizes it as having been stolen from the home of a recently murdered girl known only as "Sapphire"--a girl just a few years older than Lo. As usual when Lo begins to obsess over something, she can't get the murder out of her mind.

As she attempts to piece together the mysterious "butterfly clues," with the unlikely help of a street artist named Flynt, Lo quickly finds herself caught up in a seedy, violent underworld much closer to home than she ever imagined--a world, she'll ultimately discover, that could hold the key to her brother's tragic death.

My first review of The Butterfly Clues
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading these stories! I really enjoyed The Butterfly Clues the first time that I read it, but since I never read Lost Night, well, I had to, because I'm a completion-ist, and I have to read all the bits and pieces of a story!

Reading Sapphire's story, knowing that she was going to be killed, was really bittersweet. But it was interesting being in her head, when she was trying to avoid being a "lost girl." Which is just such a hard idea, that sounds so awful, but sounds true to life, even though it shouldn't be.

Lo is such an interesting charact to read about. She's never had a solid place to call home, and now that her brother has died, her family is fractured further. I can see why her hoarder tendencies grew to something that would be more of a concern, after such a stressor.

Watching as she and Flynt looked into what had happened to Sapphire, was so interesting, and so sad. I didn't remember what happened, so I was on the edge of my seat, to find out what had happened, and how it was going to resolve. It was such a great story, and I really enjoyed how it ended!

Loved reading these stories and I would love to read more by Kate Ellison!
