Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.
But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries…
My Review:
Oh, but this book was such a wonder to read! I've really enjoyed T. Kingfisher's writing, and this book sounded very sweet and it was, besides being a baker! Well, besides the fact that she's accused of killing the dead body, and then having an assassin after her!
Mona is perfectly happy with her life, she's content to be a baker, and using her magic with bread and her aunt's bakery. So being dragged into this situation with an assassin, and having the city dealing with political unrest, yeah, that is definitely a disruption!
I adore the humour of T. Kingfisher's writing, it's the kind with straightforward characters getting into ridiculous situations, and how that makes them view the world. It's such a delight to read, and definitely added to the atmosphere!
Following alongside Mona as she had to find her way forward, with the politics of the city, and finding safety, I wasn't sure where this story would go, but I had to continue on! I'm happy with how things wrapped up, and where we left everyone!
Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by T. Kingfisher!
