In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather grisly discovery — a decapitated chicken, animal bones, and cauldrons containing beads, feathers, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In the center of the shrine is the skull of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, on a nearby lakeshore, the headless body of a teenage boy is found by a man walking his dog.
Led by a preacher turned politician, citizen vigilantes blame devil worshippers and Wiccans and begin a witch hunt, intent on seeking revenge. Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan — "five-five, feisty, and forty-plus" — is called in to investigate, and a complex and gripping tale unfolds in this deadly mix of voodoo, Santería, and devil worship.
My Review:
This book was so great to read! Sure, it's another book in this long-running series, but yeah, there's always something new and interesting in each book, like in the science! In this book, it was the body being frozen, which threw off all sorts of things, like time of death, and that it was decomposing from the inside out instead of outside in.
Ok, the politician dude, yeah, I really didn't like him. He was an asshole, he riled people up with his wolds, and his views were toxic. He made things harder and yeah, I just absolutely wish that he got what he deserved which was to be taken down and getting a thrashing!
I really enjoyed the look into Wicca and Santeria, they're not the most popular in culture, they're misunderstood. So to have a focus on them, so do a bit of a dive into them, yeah, it was a fascinating part of this book!
One thing that I think is a pretty staple part of this series, is that we get the big explanation, of all the little things, why this happened, some of the odd details, the red herrings. Sometimes the endings seem abrupt, but these endings help negate some of that feeling!
This book was so awesome and so enjoyable, and I can't wait to read more!
