Wren Noble is dead—she was born that way. Vibrant, unlike other dead things, she craves those rare moments when her twin sister allows her to step inside her body and experience the world of the living.
Lark Noble is alive but often feels she belongs in the muted Shadow Lands—the realm of the dead. Known as the crazy girl who talks to her dead sister, she doesn't exactly fit in with the living, though a recent suicide attempt and time in a psych ward have proved to her she's not ready to join her sister in the afterlife.
Now the guy who saved Lark's life needs her to repay the favor. He and his friends have been marked for death by the malevolent spirit of a vicious and long-dead serial killer, and the twins—who should know better than to mess with the dead—may be their only hope of staying alive.
My Review:
So I love reading Kady Cross books. And this one was no exception (though I need to know if there are going to be more books in the Steampunk Chronicles series or not!) so entertaining, and I loved their voices, and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next in their lives!
For me, it kinda feels like the cover is a bit backwards. Wren is the one with the red hair, but from the description, well, I feel like she should be the one with the tan skin. While Lark is the one with the pale hair, pale skin, not tanned. Because while Wren is the one that is dead, she's the one that's vibrant, you know? But I could be wrong, and the cover's right! Just my impression!
The conversation that Lark and Ben have, about his crush, and how she said that this crush should be kicking her ass, and we know that the crush is her. And when he reveals that, and the way that he did it, was so funny! Loved that conversation!
So this is the first book. So it's opening things up, starting them up. So I'll wait on whether or not to complain about how things are developing, like their grandmother who was like Lark and Wren, the relationships, and all that! Oh, and Wren's dark little eye secret, which will probably be a problem somewhere along the line.
Favourite lines: "It was old and black—cool without screaming, 'I have a huge wang!'" Yeah, that wouldn't be a great thing for a car to say! "Are you mad because I asked, or because you didn't think of it at the time?" Yeah, it would be both for me, too, if I'd not thought of that! "I'd long ago stopped wondering at the language of the living. Temperature wasn't something that had a large impact
on my existence, but I'd never figured out how it was possible for something to be both hot and cool, even though I'd heard Lark use these same terms as though they were interchangeable." Yeah, our use of language is confusing! "'My uncle George used to walk around town in a top hat carrying his pet duck under his arm.' 'Don't worry. I hear duck-carrying skips a generation.'" That was nice of Ben to offer up his weirdness to help her! "'Oh, there's that old boys' school near Bridgeport. We should go there.' 'What's so special about it? People have seen ghosts, but I've never heard of anything bad happening there.' 'Exactly. There might be a nice boy there for Wren.'" Well, that was very nice of you, Roxi!
Oh, man, such a great, fantastic book! Loved it, and I can't wait for the sequel!

I can't wait for the sequel. I love the idea and premise behind this one as well. It was a very well written book. I thought that there was a real sense that these two young women have a lot of growing to do and will grow as characters. Nice review.
