Wheel of TBR #201, March 31st

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read Three Kinds of Lucky by Kim Harrison, The Lady in Glass and Other Stories by Anne Bishop, and When You Wish Upon A Star by Elizabeth Lim.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this month, the wheel picked Author. I read The Prince's Rogue by Elise Kova, The Farmer's War by Elise Kova, Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren, Beautiful by Christina Lauren, Champion by Marie Lu, Rebel by Marie Lu, so I've read 18/9+.

For this coming month, the wheel picked ARC.

Prompts Used This Week:
Read a Book in the Same Place, Poll Pick, Physical Book to Read in 2022.

Read a Book in the Same Place-Orange-The Witch Queen of Halloween by Kresley Cole-I can read this on my bed, so that works!

Physical Book to Read in 2022-Red-These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly-This a book I own physically that was on my list in 2022, so I'll use that!

Week 13 Reviews: Champion, Life After Legend, Life After Legend II, Rebel

From Goodreads:
He is a Legend.

She is a Prodigy.

Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government's elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic's border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country's defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything.

With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu's bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

If you've always wanted to know what happened after June and Day's second first meeting, you can find out in this LEGEND short story.

Respect the Legend. Idolize the Prodigy. Celebrate the Champion. But never underestimate the Rebel.

With unmatched suspense and her signature cinematic storytelling, #1 New York Times–bestselling author Marie Lu plunges readers back into the unforgettable world of Legend for a truly grand finale.

Eden Wing has been living in his brother's shadow for years. Even though he's a top student at his academy in Ross City, Antarctica, and a brilliant inventor, most people know him only as Daniel Wing's little brother.

A decade ago, Daniel was known as Day, the boy from the streets who led a revolution that saved the Republic of America. But Day is no longer the same young man who was once a national hero. These days he'd rather hide out from the world and leave his past behind. All that matters to him now is keeping Eden safe―even if that also means giving up June, the great love of Daniel's life.

As the two brothers struggle to accept who they've each become since their time in the Republic, a new danger creeps into the distance that's grown between them. Eden soon finds himself drawn so far into Ross City's dark side, even his legendary brother can't save him. At least not on his own . . .

Week 13 Review: When You Wish Upon a Star

From Goodreads:
What if the Blue Fairy wasn't supposed to help Pinocchio? This New York Times best-selling series twists another Disney classic into a harrowing story in which the Blue Fairy defies fairy law, setting off a dramatic chain of events.

"Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight . . ." so begins the wish that changes everything—for Geppetto, for the Blue Fairy, and for a little puppet named Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy isn't supposed to grant wishes in the small village of Pariva, but something about this one awakens some long-buried flicker within. Perhaps it's the hope she senses beneath the old man’s loneliness.

Or maybe it's the fact that long ago, before she was the Blue Fairy, she was a young woman named Chiara from this very village, one with a simple wish: to help others find happiness. Her sister Ilaria always teased her for this, for she had big dreams to leave their sleepy village and become a world-renowned opera singer. The two were close, despite their differences. While Ilaria would give anything to have a fairy grant her wish, Chiara didn't believe in the lore for which their village was famous.

Forty years later, Chiara, now the Blue Fairy, defies the rules of magic to help an old friend. But she's discovered by the Scarlet Fairy, formerly Ilaria, who, amid a decades-long grudge, holds the transgression against her sister. They decide to settle things through a good old-fashioned bet, with Pinocchio and Geppetto's fate hanging in the balance.

Will the sisters find a way back to one another? Or is this, like many matters of the heart, a gamble that comes with strings?

Week 13 Reviews: Beautiful Boss, Beautiful

From Goodreads:
The ninth work in the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling series that started with Beautiful Bastard. In this novella, Will Sumner and Hanna Bergstrom (from Beautiful Player) find that a wedding and everlasting love were just the beginning.

One Player tamed. One nerd girl satisfied. And one more major life decision to make. When Will fell for Hanna, her quirky sense of humor and fierce dedication to her career were part of the attraction. (Not to mention her coy newbie attitude toward sex and her willingness to let him teach her everything.) But when the job offers start rolling in for her—and oh, they do—Hanna has trouble deciding what she wants, where they should live, and how much she should burden Will with the decision. Magic between the sheets is only one part of a relationship...getting on the same page is quite another altogether.

From Goodreads:
After walking in on her boyfriend shagging another girl in their place, Pippa Bay Cox ditches London for the States to go on a drunken road trip with Ruby Miller and some of her Beautiful friends.

Scaling the career ladder is the default way to deal with heartbreak—and to just deal—for Jensen Bergstrom. Absolutely buried by his drive and workload, he rarely takes time for himself. But when his sister Hanna convinces him to join the gang on a two-week wine tour, he has a rare moment of cutting loose. Of course, it's only once he's committed that he realizes the strange girl he met briefly on the plane is coming along, too. She might be too much for him…or he might realize his life has become too small and needs her to make it bigger, crazier.

With this circle of friends there's always something going on: from Chloe and Sara's unexpected personality swaps to Will's new domestic side to Bennett's text message barrage and George's own happily-ever-after. In short, their adventures in love, friendship, and hilarity are nothing short of Beautiful.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading these books! I just love this series, and I hadn't managed to get to these ones, and so I had to reread the series before I got to them, and now I have, and I had a really great time reading them!

Week 13 Review: The Lady in Glass and Other Stories

From Goodreads:
A magical collection of stories new and old spanning across all of Anne Bishop's most beloved fantasy worlds.

Here, together for the first time, the shorter works of New York Times bestselling fantasy author Anne Bishop are included in one dazzling volume.

A master of bringing fantasy worlds to life, this collection showcases Bishop's impressive range, from rarities of her earliest writing to the Realms of the Blood, from darker fairytale retellings to the Landscapes of Ephemera, and from standalone stories of space exploration and fantastical creatures to the contemporary fantasy terrain of the World of the Others.

Includes previously published and unpublished tales, as well as two brand-new stories, written especially for this "Friends and Corpses," a murder mystery in which the corpse has some decidedly unusual qualities, and "Home for the Howlidays," a heartwarming return to the Blood Prophet Meg Corbyn and the shapeshifting Simon Wolfgard from The Others.

My Review:
I utterly loved reading these stories! I love her writing, and the fact that we were getting a new Others story with Meg and Simon, yeah, I was so excited to read these, and it was hard to wait to reread the series before picking this up. But I got there, and I loved reading these stories.

Both her early stories, and the fairy-tale retellings were pretty dark. Both in the stories and the endings. But I loved these stories, her takes on some familiar stories. I hurt for these characters, and raged at the unfairness, and I couldn't put them down!

Home for the Howlidays was so fantastic! We haven't had Meg and Simon from their perspective since Etched in Bone, which I know I didn't read in 2017 when it came out, but it's been a while. So it was great to be with them, and I really enjoyed this story of Meg just wanting all her friends home for the "howlidays!"

This new world, with Cecily and this world with Deceased Reclamation officers, yeah, it was so interesting, and the mystery was so well done. I would love it if we could spend more time in this world, so that we could explore more, because I wasn't expecting what happened, and I need more!

Loved reading this anthology, and I can't wait to read more by Anne Bishop!

Week 13 Review: The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh

From Goodreads:
The third book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, which finds the amateur sleuths facing their most daunting challenge preventing the murder of the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Someone is trying to kill Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Esteemed aunt of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, generous patroness of Mr. William Collins, a woman of rank who rules over the estate of Rosings Park with an unimpeachable sense of propriety—who would dare? Lady Catherine summons her grand-nephew, Mr. Jonathan Darcy, and his investigative companion, Miss Juliet Tilney, to find out.

After a year apart, Jonathan and Juliet are thrilled to be reunited, even if the circumstances—finding whoever has thus far sabotaged Lady Catherine's carriage, shot at her, and nearly pushed her down the stairs—are less than ideal. Also less than their respective fathers, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mr. Henry Tilney, have accompanied the young detectives to Rosings, and the two men do not interact with the same felicity enjoyed by their children.

With attempts against Lady Catherine escalating, and no one among the list of prime suspects seemingly capable of committing all of the attacks, the pressure on Jonathan and Juliet mounts—even as more gentle feelings between the two of them begin to bloom. The race is now on to provoke two one from the attempted murderer before it is too late—and one, perhaps, of love.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! I love this series, and this latest case of various "accidents" happened to Lady Catherine de Bourgh, well, of course the investigative duo had to come and look into it. I loved seeing them brought back together and dealing with a case where there isn't-yet-someone dead. It was so great!

This case was really interesting to read. Because Lady Catherine is not the most likeable, but she has a lot of power and control over basically everyone around her, and she's not afraid to wield that power. Her station might be superior, but as a human being? Not so much. So there were plenty of people who had cause to want to do her harm.

One thing that was really interesting, was that both fathers don't really approve of their relationship, for various reasons. Which is almost a death knell of a relationship between two young people of the time. But I have faith that they'll find a way to overcome these obstacles!

It was really fantastic to see all the plot threats come together, and find out what happened, both with the case who was actually doing it, and all the other threads. Some of it was bittersweet, but it was all really entertaining to read, and I really hope that we get more of this fantastic series!

This was such a great read, and I can't wait for whatever comes next!

Week 13 Reviews: The Prince's Rogue, The Farmer's War

From Goodreads:
The second book in an Air Awakens prequel trilogy about the Golden Guard.

The Empire has declared war against its neighbor to the north, the country of Shaldan. Prince Baldair is summoned to lead, but the untested royal harbors secret reservations about his ability to inspire confidence in troops his senior in both age and experience. The memory of his first kills the summer prior still weigh heavy on his shoulders, and he flees to his friend Erion's home near the Crossroads to wait for the army before marching north.

Raylynn Westind had never held a responsibility in her life. After losing her mother years ago, she wanders from town to town in search of a challenge, honoring the sacred song of the sword her mother taught her. She never backs down from a fight, not when her opponents are the deadly Knights of Jadar, mysteriously insistent upon her death. And certainly not when the opponent is the Empire's young playboy prince.

Baldair has never met another person as gifted with the sword as he, and is insistent on seeing a golden bracer grace Raylynn's forearm. But the woman lives a mercenary's life, and Baldair quickly learns that her loyalty comes at a high price. When he discovers the bounty on her head, the prince must choose between his responsibilities to his father's Empire, and the woman who has captured his heart as a soldier, and as a man.

From Goodreads:
Lieutenant Craig Youngly has only ever wanted one thing in his life -- to join the illustrious Golden Guard. In pursuit of his goals, he has found himself protege to Raylynn Westwind, notable Guard member and favorite of Prince Baldair. He has fought for two years in the sweltering North and now prepares to embark on a mission on behalf of the Guard that could secure his long-sought membership. It's the opportunity Craig has been waiting for, until Raylynn's attention turns toward another swordsman, Daniel Taffl.

Daniel has always been a man of modest aspirations. As a farmer's son from the East, he seeks a soldier's wage to support a future for the woman of his dreams when he returns from the front lines. It isn't until he's conscripted into Craig's mission that he learns his sword-craft has caught the eyes of the powers above him.

Craig sees his mission as an opportunity to impress the guard and exert his authority over Daniel. Daniel sees it merely as the chance to secure a more financially stable future. Their goals seem too simple to go awry. But, in the perilous jungles of the North, luck is something both men find to be in short supply.

THE FARMERS WAR is the final installment in the Golden Guard Trilogy, prequel stories to the AIR AWAKENS SERIES:

Week 13 Review: The Poisons We Drink

From Goodreads:
In a country divided between humans and witchers, Venus Stoneheart hustles as a brewer making illegal love potions to support her family.

Love potions is a dangerous business. Brewing has painful, debilitating side effects, and getting caught means death or a prison sentence. But what Venus is most afraid of is the dark, sentient magic within her.

Then an enemy's iron bullet kills her mother, Venus's life implodes. Keeping her reckless little sister Janus safe is now her responsibility. When the powerful Grand Witcher, the ruthless head of her coven, offers Venus the chance to punish her mother's killer, she has to pay a steep price for revenge. The cost? Brew poisonous potions to enslave D.C.'s most influential politicians.

As Venus crawls deeper into the corrupt underbelly of her city, the line between magic and power blurs, and it's hard to tell who to trust…Herself included.

The Poisons We Drink is a potent YA debut about a world where love potions are weaponized against hate and prejudice, sisterhood is unbreakable, and self-love is life and death.

My Review:
Oh, I loved reading this book! The synopsis sounded really entertaining, and this book fulfilled that promise, reading this book was just wonderful! This world of love potions and humans and witchers was so entertaining to read more of!

I felt really badly for Venus, she brews these potions, but she has to deal with the side effects. Then her mom is killed, and she's pulled into these politics of taking control of D.C. It was pretty awful, and it sucks that she was put in that position!

How the magic works with the potions and such was really interesting to read about! Venus's type with the potions and the different emotions and bonds it can create, for good and bad, I wanted to learn more, about how it works, how it can be used.

I was thinking that this book would evoke my emotions, and it did! With the situation that she was in, the unfairness of the world with people trying to tighten control of magic users, I just raged against it, and I was hoping by the end that it would be a better world, and yeah, I think it is, even just for Venus to have grown and changed from the events of this book.

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Bethany Baptiste!
