For millennia we've caught only glimpses of the lives and loves of the gods and goddesses on Olympus. Now Aimé e Carter pulls back the curtain on how they became the powerful, petty, loving and dangerous immortals that Kate Winters knows.
Calliope/Hera represented constancy and yet had a husband who never matched her faithfulness...
Ava/Aphrodite was the goddess of love and yet commitment was a totally different deal...
Persephone was urged to marry one man, yet longed for another...
James/Hermes loved to make trouble for others-but never knew true loss before...
Henry/Hades's solitary existence had grown too wearisome to continue. But meeting Kate Winters gave him a new hope...
Five original novellas of love, loss and longing and the will to survive throughout the ages.
My Review:
Oh, these are such great novellas! We got to see the characters before the conflicts that were mentioned briefly in the Goddess Test main books, and to see them through the conflicts, from why they changed their names, to where they got their names from, and a reason why they interact the way they do in the novels. And that was just amazing. Plus, we go to see them from their own perspectives, not from Kate's, so we got to see sides of them, that might be in development here that Kate's just had all along, and see some sides that she doesn't/can't/won't see. And it's a great thing that we do! These characters are complex, and the more we see, the more we understand, and the better the book!
Hera's story, well, Zeus is pretty much evil, and childish, and shouldn't be the high ruler, it should've been the way that they started, 6 equal beings of equal power, balancing the actual power, and applications of said power. So I totally understand her actions, though if she'd just waited, she would've gotten what she wanted. I wish we could've gotten to know Poseidon a bit more, and Hestia, since they are 2 of the 6, and it'd be nice to know all of the major players. But I do know 2 things. 1. Hera should never have married Zeus, and 2. What happened in this story, she shouldn't have used that, and her feelings for Hades/Henry to do what she did in novels. There's no excuse.
Aphrodite's story, that was a sweet, cute thing, because she's the goddess of love, and she relates that love to sex, a lot, and the way she was around her son, that was so sweet! Loved that! And so now we can really understand her actions at the end of Goddess Interrupted! And her name of Ava from Hephaestus. That was really sweet.
Persephone, well, we got to see what it was like for her, life with Hades, and how she never wanted that life, and wanted out immediately, and her reasons why, it was very interesting! And it hurt, reading, because I cared for both characters, and they were hurting each other, even if they wanted to prevent it, they really couldn't. Well, maybe she shouldn't have had her affairs, but other then that, they did the best they could do with a crappy situation. And there was a slightly happy ending, which was really good!
Hermes' story was really sad, that he was blamed for Persephone giving up her immortality, when he hadn't really had anything to do with her in a very long time. And how he's punished for just opening herself up to her choices, well, this story was pretty critical in the whole Greek God(dess)'s history and survival. And it was heart-wrenching, and sad, but the near end of Hades/Henry's story was sweet, and tied up that sadness. And that she was the one to give him the name James.
Henry's story, basically is the time of the 13 girls, the first, and the end of the last before Kate, and it's sad, and it explains his actions throughout with Kate, and how much he's gone through, he thought he was going to fade, and he was going to force it if need be. Which is just so sad!
This was an excellent collection of short stories that was just so great, really enjoyed them! Can't wait for The Goddess Inheritance!
