Week 22 Reviews: The Queen of Blood, The Reluctant Queen, The Queen of Sorrow

From Goodreads:
An idealistic young student and a banished warrior become allies in a battle to save their realm in this first book of a mesmerizing epic fantasy series, filled with political intrigue, violent magic, malevolent spirits, and thrilling adventure.

Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .

But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms.

With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits' restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . . before it's bathed in blood.

From Goodreads:
Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .
And those spirits want to kill you.
It's the first lesson that every Renthian learns.

Not long ago, Daleina used her strength and skill to survive those spirits and assume the royal throne. Since then, the new queen has kept the peace and protected the humans of her land. But now for all her power, she is hiding a terrible secret: she is dying. And if she leaves the world before a new heir is ready, the spirits that inhabit her beloved realm will run wild, destroying her cities and slaughtering her people.

Naelin is one such person, and she couldn’t be further removed from the Queen—and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her world is her two children, her husband, and the remote village tucked deep in the forest that is her home, and that's all she needs. But when Ven, the Queens champion, passes through the village, Naelin's ambitious husband proudly tells him of his wife's ability to control spirits—magic that Naelin fervently denies. She knows that if the truth of her abilities is known, it will bring only death and separation from those she loves.

But Ven has a single task: to find the best possible candidate to protect the people of Aratay. He did it once when he discovered Daleina, and he's certain he's done it again. Yet for all his appeals to duty, Naelin is a mother, and she knows her duty is to her children first and foremost. Only as the Queen's power begins to wane and the spirits become emboldened—even as ominous rumors trickle down from the north—does she realize that the best way to keep her son and daughter safe is to risk everything.

Sarah Beth Durst established a place of dark wonder in The Queen of Blood, and now the stakes are even higher as the threat to the Queen and her people grows both from within and beyond the borders of Aratay in this riveting second novel of the Queens of Renthia series.

From Goodreads:
The battle between vicious spirits and strong-willed queens that started in the award-winning The Queen of Blood and continued in the powerful The Reluctant Queen comes to a stunning conclusion in The Queen of Sorrow, the final volume of Sarah Beth Durst's Queens of Renthia trilogy.

Queen Daleina has yearned to bring peace and prosperity to her beloved forest home—a hope that seemed doomed when neighboring forces invaded Aratay. Now, with the powerful Queen Naelin ruling by her side, Daleina believes that her dream of ushering in a new era can be realized, even in a land plagued by malevolent nature spirits who thirst for the end of human life.

And then Naelin's children are kidnapped by spirits.

Nothing is more important to her than her family, and Naelin would rather watch the world burn than see her children harmed. Blaming the defeated Queen Merecot of Semo for the kidnapping, Naelin is ready to start a war—and has the power to do it.

But Merecot has grander plans than a bloody battle with her southern neighbors. Taking the children is merely one step in a plot to change the future of all Renthia, either by ending the threat of spirits once and for all . . . or plunging the world into chaos.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading these books so much! The writing was so expressive, and just drew me into this wonderful, amazing story! Such great reads, and I'm really glad that we're getting a 4th book, to explore more of this amazing world!

We're immediately in this world right from page 1, with the skipping chant and the descriptions of escape from their houses. This world was so rich and so fantastic to read about! And then when you add in these amazing, wonderful characters, who, while they had their flaws, were characters you just had to know what was going to happen to them next!

These books had a lot of suffering in them. From Daleina's village when she was a child, to the events that lead to her being "the Queen of Blood" there was a lot of loss, and a lot of funerals. Which wasn't easy to read, but it deepened these books, and they clearly showed the threat that the spirits poised.

One thing that I really loved, was that Merecot genuinely wanted to get along with Daleina, they were friends in the first book. And when we knew about the threats that she faced-and the big, final plan, it was harder to have bad thoughts about her. Made for a really satisfying ending, though things didn't go quite as planned!

These books were absolutely amazing, I loved reading every single one of them, and I can't wait to explore more of this world in the next book!

Week 22 Review: Royals

From Goodreads:
Meet Daisy Winters. She's an offbeat sixteen-year-old Floridian with mermaid-red hair; a part time job at a bootleg Walmart, and a perfect older sister who's nearly engaged to the Crown Prince of Scotland. Daisy has no desire to live in the spotlight, but relentless tabloid attention forces her join Ellie at the relative seclusion of the castle across the pond.

While the dashing young Miles has been appointed to teach Daisy the ropes of being regal, the prince's roguish younger brother kicks up scandal wherever he goes, and tries his best to take Daisy along for the ride. The crown–and the intriguing Miles–might be trying to make Daisy into a lady . . . but Daisy may just rewrite the royal rulebook to suit herself.

My Review:
This book was a lot of fun to read! Watching Daisy go on this roller coaster ride, getting into trouble, either because of who she is, or from the royal family trying to control her and the image she presented to the public...it was just hilarious! The point where she insults a lady's hat, that moment was epic!

It's not Daisy's fault that she got into the tabloids for her behavior, her ex boyfriend lied, and that was a horrible situation made worse by having to go to Scotland. The idea that her sister is marrying into royalty, that she's always kinda lead a charmed life, while Daisy always seems to be the screw-up, doesn't help!

Miles was a really great character! The royal family helped out his when they were in tough times, and now Miles helps out with their scandal-prone son. Sure, he thinks that Daisy has nefarious schemes regarding Sebastian, but once he gets over that, he's a lot of fun to be around!

A few words to describe this book would be light, fun, easy, but it also had a few serious moments, like when Daisy realizes how hard it is for Ellie. Or when she had to go home and leave behind Miles. But there was a happy ending, and I really enjoyed it!

Yeah, this book was so great, and I'm so glad that we get a sequel so we can have more!

Week 22 Review: LIFEL1K3

From Goodreads:
On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn't looking for secrets—she's too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she's just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she's discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she's ever had a worse day, Eve can't remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity's greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

Even if those secrets were better off staying buried.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading this book so much! It did take me a little while to get into it, to learn about the world and the characters that inhabited it, but once I did, the pages just flew! On a scale of The Lotus War to the Godsgrave Chronicles, it's really close to the Godsgrave Chronicles in terms of just slightly less violence and profanity. So it won't be for everyone, but for those it's for, it's excellent!

So this book was really dark. Like, the world was basically ruined, and on the junkyard island that Eve lives on, it has streets named for the types of junk that line it, like refrigerators. But there was some interesting tech, like the Lifelikes.

So I loved how the story was told, we got the now, but we also got some flashbacks to a pretty horrendous situation. And we know that it's important, it's in the book after all. But then we learn how it connects, and man, is it a punch in the gut!

Eve and Lemon were really close. I really enjoyed their relationship, as well as with the group at large, like Cricket and Ezekiel. They were really amazing characters in a pretty horrible situation. Between the overly-religious fanatics to a crazy bounty hunter to the other Lifelikes, they had a lot of deal with!

Those last few chapters, there was hit after hit. From multiple hidden secrets that could be seen as betrayals from Ezekiel and Lemon, to all the revelations at the Tower of Babel, and all the violence and circumstances dictated certain actions. But that ending was kinda a pure cliffhanger, of what's going to happen next?

I loved this book, and the wait for the next book is going to be just the worst!

Week 22 Review: Serpentine

From Goodreads:
Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight...

A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties...

In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes.

When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...

My Review:
Yeah, the first book in this series that I had to wait for, and I didn't have to wait the whole time! Though it was worth the wait! Such a great book, though snakes, ugh, I'm afraid of them. Though they weren't a big percentage of the story!

There were two big things in this book for me. The aftermath of Crimson Death, Anita's feelings regarding Nathaniel's close brush with death, and for the two remaining triplets. And then the wedding, because the lie that Anita had an affair with Ted rears its ugly head and causes a lot of problems!

There were other things going on as well, Micah trying to help the unusual shapeshifters, some dissatisfaction with the way things were going with the status quo, the missing bridal party members with a focus on Anita's guys as suspects, and those were so great to read, so there was always something going on!

I think this is the first book that Otto/Olaf has been in since he became a shifter. Which changes the dynamics between him and Anita, because she doesn't have that edge anymore. And that she doesn't have a guy for her lioness. So that was a fun situation for Anita to deal with, and totally read this sentence with full sarcasm!

That climax was totally creepy, and I totally wish that we had more of it! This book was pretty hefty, but that's almost always a good thing when it's a good book. And yeah, I kinda wish we had more, especially that epilogue, to get a few more answers, and more time with the happy ending!

This book was really awesome, and I can't wait for more in this series, it's just so great!

Week 22 Review: Spider Bones

From Goodreads:
John Lowery was declared dead in 1968—the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam, his body buried long ago in North Carolina. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Hemmingford, Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice, and how did an American soldier end up in Canada?

Tempe sets off for the answer, exhuming Lowery's grave in North Carolina and taking the remains to Hawaii for reanalysis—to the headquarters of JPAC, the US military's Joint POW/ MIA Accounting Command, which strives to recover Americans who have died in past conflicts. In Hawaii, Tempe is joined by her colleague and ex-lover Detective Andrew Ryan (how "ex" is he?) and by her daughter, who is recovering from her own tragic loss. Soon another set of remains is located, with Lowery's dog tags tangled among them. Three bodies—all identified as Lowery.

And then Tempe is contacted by Hadley Perry, Honolulu's flamboyant medical examiner, who needs help identifying the remains of an adolescent boy found offshore. Was he the victim of a shark attack? Or something much more sinister?

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book! It was different from the other books in that we got to go to Hawaii for a working vacation and work with the JPAC on this baffling case of multiple bodies identifying in different ways as the same guy! And we also got to see Lily and Katy interact, which was pretty hilarious!

This book had a lot going on. There's the case of "who's who" with 3 different bodies that were thought to be Lowery, to the guy that Katy was seeing was killed just as he was coming home. And Lily having trouble with her sobriety, so a change of location as well as a vacation sounded good. Oh, and some bodies turning up having been chewed on by sharks. Fun times!

I kinda guessed that the cousin was why there were so many bodies that were identified as Lowery, because of the whole, they looked alike thing. And I was right, but I didn't know how complicated it would be, and yeah, that was really great!

One thing that I wished for, was that we could've explored more of Tempe's past working with JPAC. More specifically, why she left. I'm pretty sure it's because she started going between Carolina and Montreal and the workload got to be too much, but I can't be certain, because it wasn't stated!

This book was fantastic, and I enjoyed reading it so much! Yeah for different!

Week 22 Review: Jane, Unlimited

From Goodreads:
If you could change your story, would you?

Jane has lived a mostly ordinary life, raised by her recently deceased aunt Magnolia, whom she counted on to turn life into an adventure. Without Aunt Magnolia, Jane is directionless. Then an old acquaintance, the glamorous and capricious Kiran Thrash, blows back into Jane's life and invites her to a gala at the Thrashes' extravagant island mansion called Tu Reviens. Jane remembers her aunt telling her: "If anyone ever invites you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you'll go."

What Jane doesn't know is that at Tu Reviens her story will change; the house will offer her five choices that could ultimately determine the course of her untethered life. But every choice comes with a price. She might fall in love, she might lose her life, she might come face-to-face with herself. At Tu Reviens, anything is possible.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I knew going in that originally it was going to be a choose your own adventure, and then was changed into what it became, and I was really excited to read it, because yeah, it's something different!

I loved that we had that beginning, and then we got to this point where Jane had these 5 choices of who to go with, and then we got the stories of her making each choice. And these stories were all different, from the spy story to the multiple universes story. So great to read!

Another part that I loved was that there were a lot of the same beats, like the yelling that happened because of the fish statue, but Jane had different reactions, given her choice in each story. And how her presence or knowledge changed each story, because the first two stories, their events (the stolen painting and statue, and the family being helped) happened in each story. Perhaps most notably in the 3rd story, where the spy plot line had a pretty dire ending. The whole story did.

Of my favourites, I think the last one, where she followed Jasper, was my favourite. Then the 4th one where she followed Remi to his mom and was the multiple universes story. Then tied were the first two books, the art heist and the spy story. Last was the 3rd story where she followed Kiran. Yeah, that one was pretty depressing!

This book was strange and weird, and with each different choice story, we got a different genre, a different bit of weird, and was just so great to read!

Week 22 Reviews: The Scorpion Rules, The Swan Riders

From Goodreads:
A world battered by climate shift and war turns to an ancient method of keeping peace: the exchange of hostages. The Children of Peace - sons and daughters of kings and presidents and generals - are raised together in small, isolated schools called Preceptures. There, they learn history and political theory, and are taught to gracefully accept what may well be their fate: to die if their countries declare war.

Greta Gustafsen Stuart, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan-Polar Confederation, is the pride of the North American Precepture. Learned and disciplined, Greta is proud of her role in keeping the global peace, even though, with her country controlling two-thirds of the world's most war-worthy resource — water — she has little chance of reaching adulthood alive.

Enter Elián Palnik, the Precepture's newest hostage and biggest problem. Greta's world begins to tilt the moment she sees Elián dragged into the school in chains. The Precepture's insidious surveillance, its small punishments and rewards, can make no dent in Elián, who is not interested in dignity and tradition, and doesn't even accept the right of the UN to keep hostages.

What will happen to Elián and Greta as their two nations inch closer to war?

From Goodreads:
Greta Stuart has become AI. New transmitters have silvered her fingerprints. New receptors have transformed her vision. And the whole of her memory has become one book in a vast library of instant knowledge. Greta is ready to rule the world.

But the new technology is also killing her.

Greta is only sixteen years old, but her new enhancements are burning through her mortal body at an alarming rate. Of course the leader of the AIs, an ancient and compelling artificial intelligence named Talis, has a plan. Greta can simply do what he's done when the time comes, and take over the body of one of the Swan Riders, the utterly loyal humans who serve the AIs as part army, part cult.

First though, Greta will have to find a way to stay sane inside her new self. Talis's plan for that involves a road trip. Escorted by Swan Riders, Greta and Talis set out on a horseback journey across the strange and not-quite-deserted landscape of Saskatchewan. But there are other people interested in Greta, people who want to change the world…and the Swan Riders might not be as loyal as they appear…

My first review of The Scorpion Rules, The Swan Riders
My Review:
Wow, I really enjoyed reading this books again, and back to back as well! I thought I had when I first read The Swan Riders for the first time, but nope. So this was a first, and it was so great to read the two of them together!

There are three things that I really love about this series. The amazing writing, the wonderful plot with interesting ideas on how to limit bloodshed, and the characters who I just want to read more about! Greta, Xie, Elián, Talin, they were all so great to read about!

The first book has a lot of hilarious one liners, mostly to do with the goats. Just hilarious, especially because of of the Bonnie Prince, who is named after an ancestor of Greta. Like the big food fight. Or when they use him as a distraction near the end. The way it's written just amplifies the humour!

The second book is more serious. What with the whole "she's the first new A.I." thing and thus it isn't safe to travel via aircraft. With Elián stabbing the body that Talin was occupying, meaning that this version of him was stuck in this body. And the Swan Riders themselves, and their heart-breaking loyalty!

I could really see us getting a 3rd book, and I would really love one, from curing the brain damage holding an A.I. does to a human brain, to the new world that Grace (because A.I.'s choose new names) created, without the weapons platform and all. I would really love a 3rd book. I can do without, but I want to spend more time with these wonderful characters.

These books were just both so freaking amazing and I love them and I wish we could have more!

Book Blogger Hop #34, June 1st

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, I relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: What do you think your blog says about you? (submitted by Cathy @ What Cathy Read Next)

I have no idea! That I read a good amount, fall behind very easily, and an very weird, would be my guesses! What about you guys? Happy reading!

The Reward Challenge Update #350, June 1st

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read The Scorpion Rules which counts 3 times as a 2018 Dystopia Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, The Swan Riders which counts 3 times as a 2018 Dystopia Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, Jane, Unlimited which counts 3 times as a SAC 2018 Book and a WoW Book, Spider Bones which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, Serpentine which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book and a WoW Book, Lifel1k3 which counts 4 times as a 2018 Dystopia Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book and a WoW Book, Royals which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, The Queen of Blood which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, The Reluctant Queen which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book, The Queen of Sorrow which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2018 Book.

So I have 27 counts which translates to $13.50 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

First Lines Friday #368, June 1st

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Everything will be better soon, Daleina thought. She'd climbed to the top of the canopy and was balancing on two slender branches. Spread before her, the forests of Aratay looked magnificent. Red, orange, and yellow leaves blazed like candle flames in the late-afternoon sun. This high up, she could see across all of western Aratay, even as far as the untamed lands beyond the border. Shrouded by a thick mist, the untamed lands looked as if they were boiling. As she watched, a mountain burst out of the soupy haze, and then it crumbled. Beyond the borders of the world, everything was as ephemeral as a sand castle washed away by waves. So long as Aratay had a queen, it would never be like that." -The Queen of Sorrow by Sarah Beth Durst

Well, this is a very hopefully opening! It's not going to stay that happy! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #340, May 31st

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 1217 which turned out to be Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready! It's been on my TBR pile since August 3rd, 2011, and I added it because I love her writing! Happy reading!

Third Sentence Thursday #355, May 31st

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"Are you two crazy?" -The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst, page 175.

If you're asking, then the answer is probably yes!
