A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Set in the mystic land of Aztlan, "The Unholy" is a novel of destiny as healer and slayer. Native lore of dreams and visions, shape changing, and natural magic work to spin a neo-gothic web in which sadness and mystery lure the unsuspecting into a twilight realm of discovery and decision.
My Review:
This was a good book. Just not my kind of book, something about it, for me, just pulled me out the story too often for me enjoy it, which was unfortunate. It sounded good, and I wanted to enjoy it, that just didn't happen, which was too bad.
I was a bit confused with Aztlan, because it sounded fairly modern, mixed with the magic of both the good side, and the bad side. And then there were modern terms, and things, like hospitals and nurses and doctors and such.
I felt bad for Claire, her mom was killed when she was young, and it shook her to the point where she didn't become a curandera like her mom and all her ancestors before her, but took a different path until the Archbishop created circumstances where going down the curandera path was what had to happen.
The ending, it was good, justified, and had just that right note, that while killing is a bad thing, the evil Archbishop is, well, evil, and the good people like Claire are the ones that have to stop the bad guys, even if it means the death of the other side.
Yeah, while I didn't enjoy this book, I know that others will!
